Boarding/alighting from a car different from the car one is assigned to

Is it possible to get off from a car where you weren’t sitting or sleeping? For example, if you’re in a sleeping car, can you walk through the diner or lounge and get off (at a station with low-level platforms) through a coach car?

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Why can’t Amtrak have menus onboard and/or online that match what you’re served? For example, the Flexible Dining menu on the Crescent (both onboard and online) is not accurate. When you order a meal on the Crescent, you may not be served what you ordered; you may get a completely different...

Boarding/alighting from a car different from the car one is assigned to

I had a first-class ticket. I boarded the business-class car next to first class. The onboard staff got all in a huff and insisted that I get off and board the first class car directly. They weren’t nice about it, either: almost yelling.

Boarding/alighting from a car different from the car one is assigned to

Out of curiosity, when you board an Amtrak train, why can’t you board a train through any car (in your class of service)? Why do you have to have to board only through the car for which you have a ticket? For example, once I boarded the Acela through the car next to mine. The onboard staff...

    Discussion of train names

Fair enough. I think that the Crescent is named after the Crescent City (New Orleans). Another terrible train name: the Mule. Named after a relatively slow alternate means of transportation (mules)?

    Discussion of train names

Agreed although I’d like for Amtrak to give names to its new trains too, instead of “______ Service”.

    Discussion of train names

Yes, it was an airplane, but it was also an Amtrak (and Pennsylvania Railroad and Penn Central) train that was named after the airplane. That’s like Amtrak naming a train “The Concorde” or “Boeing 787”.

    Discussion of train names

Amtrak markets the Auto-Train by name. Maybe calling it the “Silver Whatever” might not affect ridership much, but the name probably helps a little.

    Discussion of train names

This is minor, but some train names aren’t the best for marketing. For example, the names “Silver Meteor” and “Silver Star” don’t indicate Florida at all. Yes, those are famous names to railfans, but wouldn’t some other names be better, such as the “Florida Special”? The worst train name of...

    What should Amtrak change?

Amtrak should also focus on improving passenger sleep quality in Viewliner and Superliner rooms. The curtains in rooms don’t block all light; Viewliners rattle a lot unless you’re in the top bunk; and the mattresses are kind of thin and hard. Using window shades in addition to curtains...

Proposed legislation could affect credit card rewards in the US

“Privileged”? I work 60-80 hours a week to earn a living, worked my tail off in school to get in shape for the job market, while others were partying, and see no end in sight to working 60-80 hours a week. My income level certainly was not handed to me on a silver platter, and my friends and...

    What should Amtrak change?

In addition, one thing that Amtrak should change is the announcements made on long-distance trains: the long announcements made to coach passengers ought not be heard in sleeping cars. In my sleeping car room, I don’t need to hear the long announcements made to coach passengers, since those...

    What should Amtrak change?

The Crescent is 28 minutes slower between NY and DC than the fastest Northeast Regional. That’s enough to impact someone’s decision for trips along the Northeast Corridor. Running trains as fast as practicable ought to be a priority for any passenger railroad. With all of the competitive...

    What should Amtrak change?

In the Northeast Corridor, long distance trains’ trip times are a little longer than Northeast Regionals’ are. Amtrak should reduce long distance trains’ trip times so that they are the same as Northeast Regionals. That would save 5-10 minutes between NYP and PHL. I thought that long distance...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Is there a contact at Amtrak who would be receptive to suggestions about long distance train dining? Flexible Dining is just not cutting it: this time, a menu printed using an office printer in 81/2”x11” office paper; the menu in my room was wrong and didn’t have what was listed; I was given a...

The effect of the potential rail strike on Amtrak

Has Amtrak cancelled all long distance trains or just some of them? I have an upcoming trip on the Crescent. My ticket still shows on the Amtrak app, the Amtrak mentions “select” trains being affected by the potential strike and I haven’t received notice of cancellation. But news reports say...

    Crescent operations and schedule performance

I stopped taking it northbound. This year, I had 26 northbound flights between two cities served by the Crescent. All were by plane.

    What should Amtrak change?

One thing Amtrak should change is its website payment mechanics so that credit card payments go through more often. I constantly have credit cards declined online by Amtrak, and yesterday two credit cards caused the site and app to stop working; messages appeared stating that there was an...

    What should Amtrak change?

The platform areas look dirty, have paint peeling and, at the ends, are totally derelict. If that’s well-maintained, I shudder to think what counts as poorly maintained. Look at the Yelp reviews.
