    Changing locomotives in Washington?

Thanks, that’s very helpful. I saw a few trains heading north on the NEC between Washington and Philadelphia, with diesels. That explains that too then. Thanks again!

    Changing locomotives in Washington?

There seems to be some kind of issue this evening with changes from electric to diesel locomotives on southbound trains at Washington Union Staton. I’ve been sitting on my train in the station for over 2 hours and 15 minutes, and it took an hour and 40 minutes for the electric locomotive to get...

Track Your Train map: why was the old one removed?

No, no, no, no, no. Sorry to be blunt but my posts aren’t getting through. The Amtrak map that showed trains moving along the line, in real time, is gone. Done, finished, over. My question is why it was replaced with the Track your Train map that only shows the status as of a few minutes ago.

Track Your Train map: why was the old one removed?

    Thanks, that works- much appreciated!

Track Your Train map: why was the old one removed?

It’s gone. I’ve been searching for it onboard and the only Amtrak map or the like is the one whose photo is above.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Sorry to be griping so much today but Flexible Dining today was not good: 1. The side salad was a small bowl of lettuce. There was one cherry tomato in it. Nothing else. 2. The vegetarian enchiladas were fine, on par with Amy’s frozen ones (Whole Foods, Target, etc. sell them). 3. The...

Track Your Train map: why was the old one removed?

No, there definitely was another map that Amtrak had that would show trains actually moving along the line. I used it once on an Empire Service train when it temporarily served Grand Central, and recall it showing the train creeping through the Bronx at 30 mph.

Track Your Train map: why was the old one removed?

Sorry, I haven’t been clear. The current Amtrak map allows you to click and see the status of a train, as of a few minutes ago. There used to be a map that would actually show the train moving along the line, in real time. It was much more useful. If you wanted to know exactly where the...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I boarded at the originating station. Since Amtrak just prints menus from an office printer, on regular white office paper, it can’t just print the menu and have the current menu in its sleeping car rooms? It still has old menus in its rooms? At least use resume paper from Staples, Amtrak...

Track Your Train map: why was the old one removed?

Thanks for your response. Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but the Track Your Train map onboard, when connected to Amtrak wifi, no no longer shows trains in real time, moving along the map.

Track Your Train map: why was the old one removed?

Thanks for the other website- I appreciate that. And thanks for your response. The asm.transitdocs.com website that you mentioned is much better. I may be confused/wrong but there was something before, available onboard, that showed your train moving along a map, with speed, etc. shown. I...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

On the train that I’m on- and for which I paid over $500 for a roomette for an approximately 600-mile trip: The Flexible Dining menus in the room (printed on 8 1/2”x11” copier paper) were old, and none of the lunch/dinner entrees that I had wanted were available. The menu on the Amtrak website...

Track Your Train map: why was the old one removed?

Amtrak used to have a map where (if I recall correctly) you could type in your train number and see your train moving, and it would show the speed and other train information. It was handy. Now it’s been replaced with the Track Your Train map. I find it hard to use on a phone; particularly if...

    Motivation for traveling by train?

I am taking Amtrak now (I’m on a train) because the schedules work for me. I am taking the train one way (overnight) and flying back. I could fly both ways, but doing a day trip by plane would mean leaving really early or arriving back really late; I could fly and stay overnight but a hotel...

Ideas for Amtrak to raise revenue

Amtrak ought to get employees to be nicer and more positive. I’m on a train now, and when boarding and when having my ticket scanned, and when the crew made announcements upon departure, it’s all been borderline hostile, with no smiles or niceties. Surely having positive interactions with...

    Amtrak Marketing

Great points. This is why I think that the US needs to copy the EU and bring in additional subsidized passenger train operators. The FAST Act pilot program that resulted in no LD routes being operated by someone other than Amtrak wasn’t enough. Public policy should aim to give the US a...

    Amtrak Marketing

Sure, you are correct: Amtrak accounting is Byzantine nonsense. But whatever Amtrak’s accounting, marketing could significantly increase ridership. One station that I regularly ride to is Greenville, SC. In the last two years, I have always been the only (!) sleeping car passenger getting off...

    Amtrak Marketing

Because Amtrak can mostly sell out short long-distance trains, with no marketing whatsoever, and these days those trains lose money. With a modest increase in ridership, long-distance trains could break even. It shouldn’t be that hard to have a modest increase in ridership. Given how many...

    FDA rules in cafe?

Amtrak cafe cars put pizza and hamburgers in the microwave. That’s all anyone needs to know about the quality of Amtrak cafe cars.

Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

It’s not hard to see that your ticket-which appears online and then is emailed to you- is for a combination of trains and buses instead of the Coast Starlight. And if I were taking a trip for work (to write an article about it), I’d carefully check everything in advance and research everything...
