Vehicle crashes at Rainbow Bridge at US/Canada border (11-22-23)

If the Whirlpool Bridge is closed to rail as well as road traffic, then the Maple Leaf would be affected. 63 shows on trackers as approaching Buffalo now; I guess we'll see what happens after Exchange St.

Discussion of expansion of service in Western States

Did the same thing to me. I think those are haybales, cylindrical rather than balls.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Nice train! Not the fastest train on earth, and they're going to need crossing gates or something if they're not going to waste four cops/soldiers/National Guardsmen on each grade crossing.

    CTA Yellow Line collision

A CTA Yellow Line train ran into other CTA equipment (a snowplow) in Howard Yard today, injuring several. Tribune article For those puzzling how an operating train with passengers ended up in the yard, the Yellow Line tracks go through the yard to get from the Yellow Line proper (ex-Skokie...

Gardner's statement on House budget proposal

The district "represented" by Perry, sponsor of four amendments in that list to zero-out or cancel various aspects of rail and transit, includes Harrisburg, which has excellent Amtrak service at least eastward (Keystone service)! So much for "all politics is local." o_O

    Capitol Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I'm not IndyLions, but the Capitol Limited is viewable on the Elkhart railcams and of late has two sleepers in the rear. I'm presuming both are full sleepers because the end door of the second sleeper is at the upper level (and would be on the lower level if it was a transdorm).

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

That last picture threw me for a loop* because I figured out quickly that it was Chicago but there's no exposed platforms at CUS. Until I looked up that the riverside building over those platforms opened in 1983. That view didn't last much longer after that photo was taken! *pun intended, even...

    Las Vegas Monorail

My wife and I just came home from a trip that ended with 2-3 days in Las Vegas. We stayed at the Sahara, which is on the Monorail. Seeing the traffic on the Strip/Las Vegas Blvd., we chose to see the other casinos, go to dinner, etc. by Monorail. The fare is NOT cheap, although there's a...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

As has been pointed out, these drawings are about accessible rooms and spaces and how they'd have access to common facilities like cafes, diners, and lounges. Details like windows (or the layout of the galley, or whether non-accessible rooms will have toilets, or whether there'll be a coffee...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I think there would have to be two accessible cores on splitting trains like the Empire Builder and Lake Shore Limited, or this wouldn't be equivalent to the ADA requirement of one accessible room per sleeper car once the combined train has split into two trains.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Very interesting! Generally I like these plans a lot. I like the diner/lounge in addition to the diner on the single-levels. I like the upstairs cafe on the bilevels. I like having the large bedrooms and the economy bedrooms in two different cars rather than the hall bending in the middle of the...

    Cardinal discussion

A friend is traveling in October on the Cardinal with two accessible rooms, so I presume the Cardinal is running (or is scheduled to run in October) with at least two sleeper cars as every Amtrak sleeper car has only one accessible room. Has the Cardinal been consistent about having at least two...

NS PTC failure on 8/28/23 affecting all NS routes

Amtrak website says the suspensions of 30, 48, and Michigan service are due to signal problems on the host railroad, not the coming storm. Link. (Edit: ninja'd by AmtrakBlue)

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

I'm going to ask a possibly stupid question: is the trackage between Yuma and Phoenix in place and in use? Because some googling comes up with cites that it's not only intact but used for infrequent freight service, and other cites that the tracks were pulled up somewhere between Buckeye or Palo...

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

I agree the 10 additional sets are for expanded service. As to more diesel Airos, from the list in Amtrak's press release, Downeaster & Cascades are all-diesel and getting Airos. The Cascades have had expansion plans for years, pretty much awaiting new equipment. I wouldn't be surprised if the...

    Caught between American and Expedia

I'm glad to post that I have an update. I sent a complaint by certified letter (and email) referencing the Fair Credit Billing Act to FNBO, as I used the AGR card for my tickets. FNBO called me a few days ago to confirm my letter. I referred to details from various emails I has received, and...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

I'm of two minds about that opinion piece. On one hand, there's an absolutely crying need for more service. There should be: *five or six round-trips a day on the Wolverine: early morning (7 or 8 from Chicago, earlier from Pontiac), late morning (a couple of hours later), midday, early...
