Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

As the November 2022 report on the committee website helpfully linked by PerRock states: While things might have changed since that November report, California not running its cars while Illinois does sounds (IMH layman's O) less like Amtrak holding them up and more like CalDOT holding them up...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Tired of catastrophizing. God grant rail supporters the courage to take on Amtrak when it screws up, the serenity to not blame every delay and incident on Amtrak, and the wisdom to know the difference. We can land on 'em like a ton of bricks when we actually have information. It's wearying to...

Ohio finally starts the process for new Amtrak service

There was a plan for a Cincinnati-Dayton-Columbus-Cleveland or "3C" service back in 2008. Three round-trips a day, I think. The federal government was going to pay most of the capital, but Ohio would have to pay the operating subsidy. Though that was only a few millions annually -- less than...

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

I shop at Jewel often (1-2 times a week, at a city and a suburban location) using my AGR card. The machine usually gives a chip-misread error the first time, but I wipe it on my coat (sometimes reject-and-wipe twice) and it invariably goes through. It never occurred to me that it could be...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

CVS by Ogilvie Station (Madison St. @ the river) is a lot closer than that Target. There used to be a CVS right across from Union but it closed fairly recently. ☹️ The French Market a few blocks north (also by Ogilvie) has good food but I'm not sure what they've got for takeaway booze now. At...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I just realized a possible flaw in my suggestion of mixed single-level and multilevel cars: while the Venture cars show coaches can be accessible for car-to-car pass-through, I don't know that sleepers can be. The accessible bedroom in Viewliners is on the end for a reason, and the Viewliner...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I see the desire for multilevel cars to take advantage of views and keep trains from being too long is running smack into the fact that the levels of a multilevel car are too short to have bunk beds in the sleepers or overhead racks in coach. How about both? Single-level coaches and sleepers...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Not doubting that's your red line, but normally-very-wary Americans do seem to use car-end racks where they exist and more interestingly use the Superliner luggage racks right by the exit door while riding mostly on the upper level.

    Southeast Asian rail travels

The Man in Seat 61, who tries to keep on top of all passenger-rail matters throughout the world 😳, says the new station will be open January 19. Link.

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

Generally true, especially the can't force electrification part. NIMBYs, mostly in the area from Glenview to Lake Forest, who claim they're not against improved Amtrak service but the additional freight trains that lengthened sidings would allow. Just this once, it ain't Wisconsin's...

Train travel is "in" in 2023?

Sorry, I used your post as a jumping-off point to discuss a point of view I've seen pop up here and was only tangentially responding to the "not prepared for it" aspect of your post. That point of view (which I know isn't what you said) is "Amtrak sucks right now and its leadership must want it...

Train travel is "in" in 2023?

All of 2023 isn't necessarily going to be this. Amtrak's hiring, and that's taking time. They'll be able to repair more cars and bring them back into service, restore traditional dining, etc. when they've got more workers. NARP/RPA seems to be keeping on top of whether, once Amtrak is able, it's...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion

This morning's 49 had the Boston sleeper, but an odd situation with the coaches. (Seen at Elkhart so combined 49/449.) Following the Boston sleeper and cafe were only three coaches. Then following the diner, two NY sleepers, and baggage were two coaches. Does anyone know if those were NY...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Pere Marquette runs sometimes with two Superliners, neither is a Sightseer Lounge, and as far as I know there was still cafe service. I was presuming one of the two coaches was a snack coach.

Progress on service to Madison WI

Sorry for getting political but public passenger rail IS political. Amtrak & transit often face opponents willing to lie and mislead about the benefits of passenger rail to the point where even passenger rail supporters sometimes find themselves echoing their points. Time and time again...

Progress on service to Madison WI

The Talgo contract also involved having the assembly and ongoing maintenance facility in Milwaukee. Which sounds less like the sweetheart deal "no-bid contract" implies and more like a standard economic development deal, with good industrial jobs and all that. And a better economic development...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

I was looking at the Amtrak website for trips from Chicago to Tampa on random dates over the next few months, and I noticed something odd: the Silver Star seems to run into Tampa from Washington, but the return trips all involve a bus from Tampa. 🤔 For the dates I checked (which were by no means...

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

Would you believe I found out I was wrong only minutes after my posting? Metrolink is running a service with new DMUs and calling it the Arrow. So another U.S. rail operator is using the word Arrow.

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

I actually like the real English word Arrow for a train. It's got railroad history and modern usage (Italy's Frecciarossa, Frecciabianca, and Frecciargento trains, or Red, White, and Silver Arrows). There's no need to resort to funky trademarkable spelling when there's not going to be another...
