Do a little more research and you will likely find that many of the delays, especially northbound, occur between Meridian and Tuscaloosa. I've heard crews refer to that stretch as the Bermuda Triangle.

Re: calling signals. I don't know about NEC, but having been on the Crescent many times, I know that the Engineer calls out signals on the radio and a Conductor acknowledges them.

It is an all volunteer program, so it will vary from one train to another, season to season and day to day. The pandemic has curtailed it somewhat. The route I worked, the Crescent, has had as many as 40 volunteers and we worked up to 5 days a week. from May to September, but much less lately.
