    Texas Eagle discussion

It looks like that Water Falls Park might be a nice place to hang out in the morning before boarding the northbound Eaglet in the afternoon. Will definitely look up Tex/Mex & BBQ places (pref. within walking distance), as it would be nice to have a meal of regional cuisine for supper after...

Finally booked the trip (Pontiac, IL-Ft. Worth, TX & return) just before heading to work, and booked a room at the Hampton Inn 2 blocks from the station. The hubby wanted to see if the AGR points from booking the outward journey would show up & be useable for booking the return trip (they...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

If the hubby and I were a few decades younger, we might consider a hostel (I stayed in them a few times on European trips in college), but not in our 60s. I looked up the La Quinta which @Bob Dylan had suggested in Dallas, but unfortunately it's now a Holiday Inn Express, and charging in excess...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

I tried looking up hotel prices in Dallas & Ft. Worth near Amtrak this morning, and spotted several places with rooms in the $200-$230 range, which is a lot closer to what the hubby & I would consider "reasonable" prices. The hubby approved the idea of getting off at Dallas/Ft. Worth when I...

Pretty much any of the Texas towns along the TE's route from San Antonio on north would do for a stopping point. And city buses (with stops near Amtrak and near hotels) would be adequate for transportation between station and hotel. "Reasonably priced" to me would be anything $200/night or...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

The hubby and I are planning a trip on the Texas Eagle in October, going no farther South & West than San Antonio. We were thinking of just spending the night in the San Antonio station, considering how late the southbound Eaglet arrives and how early the northbound Eaglet departs, but a few...

    Texas Eagle discussion

I think the hubby and I were spoiled by the free trolley connecting the Kansas City Amtrak station (on last fall's Missouri River Runner trip) with several reasonably-priced hotels, including ones whose rewards programs I'm a member of. Part of the reason we were contemplating spending the...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

The hubby and I watch "trainTuber" videos on YouTube which include the meals eaten on the trip, and those are useful for reports on how the food was prepared & how it tastes. Using that anecdotal information together with the close-up images from the linked site above provide a better idea of...

Since I haven't yet booked the trip, I will have to look into getting off at Austin instead of San Antonio. Sounds like it might be an improvement over spending the night in the San Antonio station, then perhaps hiking 1/2 mile each way to the 24/7 Denny's for "first breakfast" before "second...

I think that, from what I've read elsewhere on these forums (and on the Amtrak website), passengers on the TE/SSL continuing beyond San Antonio in either direction MAY disembark, but are not required to. (On days when the Eaglet ends its run at San Antonio, everyone has to disembark, as the...

They would still have made that vegan chili extra-filling, though. This is the current Flexible Dining menu for the TE between Chicago and San Antonio, per the Amtrak website.

    Texas Eagle discussion

The only problem with wandering the city is that the time when the TE/SSL is stopped in San Antonio may be quite late in the evening, with very few businesses open. (I have no idea if personal safety late at night in that part of San Antonio might also be an issue, but some travelers might be...

If they are continuing on the same train, they wouldn't have to disembark and re-embark, especially not in the sleeping cars. (Although there might not be any electricity or running water during the time when the Eaglet is coupled to the Sunset Limited westbound or decoupled from the SSL...

I Googled station information on the San Antonio station, since the hubby and I plan to take the TE from central IL down to San Antonio, and return the following day. Apparently, the station opens shortly before the southbound Eaglet arrives, stays open overnight, and closes shortly after the...

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

I had a somewhat similar experience last summer, where I was taken advantage of by a Facebook scammer (purporting to be a crochet hook company I trusted, and running a "giveaway"). Something seemed odd about the process to claim the "giveaway prize," so I checked my FNBO account the next...

I believe a kosher meal would also work for those who require halal meat, as kosher meat is required to meet standards at least as strict (probably stricter) than halal meat. (Not Jewish or Muslim here, but that's what I've read.)

The "gooey butter cake" I've seen at Walmart (and used to see at the local supermarket) was either in a 8" square foil pan, or single-serving square or rectangular cuts from a family-size cake. Hope those round individual butter cakes are at Sam's Club the next time I'm there!

Even longer for me (not since grad school 40+ years ago). The hubby & I would probably be catching a connecting train if we were in CUS, though, so hopefully we wouldn't need to be outside the station.

    Chicago Union Station discussion

While researching (earlier this month) a potential south/west-bound Texas Eagle trip for this fall, I looked up the hours that the San Antonio station (our destination) is open. Because the southbound TE arrives somewhat late in the evening (8:45PM, if it's on time) and the northbound TE...
