    Hiawatha discussion

Maybe the stars will align where you get the venture cars or the trainset with the veterans cabbage car? I know there's mixed reviews out there of the venture cars (either you love 'em or you hate 'em). Please let us know how you first Hiawatha trip goes. 👍

Train festival 2023 at LA Union Station

It was great to see that #203 made an appearance. It looks like such a great way to celebrate train travel there @TinCan782. Thanks for sharing the pics!

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

I'm so glad to see that the Day 1 livery (#301) is starting to make a comeback...and leading too! This is my favorite charger. It was on #29 last night (10/19) from DC and is headed back towards DC on tonight (10/20)'s #30 (as seen below from the Chesterton, IN railcam). I know that it has...

    Capitol Limited discussion

From what I've been seeing from railcams, today's (9/20) #29 into Chicago has a special engine (#301) leading, so maybe it will be on its return back to DC.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

Great catches with the chargers there @Agent! The chargers heading to Chicago is great to see!

    Cardinal discussion

This sounds like a good day trip @PatchesC ! Amtrak day trips are my favorite. What's great about this is that you get to spend some good considerable time in Chicago and then head back to Indy in good time.

Railfanning Northern IL - Amtrak and Metra

This past weekend (9/3), I was able to return to Glenview, IL and do some railfanning. I was able to be in the presence of the dash 8 on one of the Hiawatha routes (that I've been seeing over the past few weeks on Chicago & North Western Power House Live Webcam (North). A few others that I...

    Hello

Welcome to the forum @bwaisanen1975! I agree. This place and its users are a wealth of knowledge. Where are you catching the City of New Orleans and where are you taking it to? We look forward to hear about your upcoming trip. Be sure to leave a trip report as well!

    Cardinal discussion

Sometimes there is bustitution, but it's hard to say. Just curious, how were you planning to do Indy-to-Cincy same day? Do note that the Cardinal is a night-time service between those two cities. I'm assuming leaving Indy at 12:15A and then getting back into Indy at 5:15A the next day?

    Capitol Limited discussion

You got lucky there @Sidney. Looking at the Capitol Limited that just left Chicago today (9/3/23), it had the two locomotives, the baggage car, and three superliners (coach, diner, and sleeper). They probably added that extra car there on yours in preparation for the long weekend.

    Updated San Diego Coaster/Trolley/Amtrak cam

I hope you get to stay near the cam location @caravanman ! That looks like a great place to railfan with the Pacific Surfliners, Coasters, and the light rail next to it. I hope it works out for you.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

From various railcams and a few people out railfanning today, I saw that there was a charger leading on #89 today (8/28). It was cool to see a charger lead on that line.

    Hiawatha discussion

I saw that one of the Hiawatha trainsets (337 is pictured below) had a Dash 8 leading on it. From what I've heard, this one specific trainset has been having the Dash 8 on it all day. I know that we talked about the Hiawatha having the veterans cabbage car (90221) above, but it has been quite a...

Effect of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Hilary on Amtrak

I'm sure speed restrictions will play a part in this as well. Even though the article lists the Pacific Surfliners, I'm sure the SWC as well will have some restrictions as well as it heads to and departs from Los Angeles.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

It looks like some more chargers being delivered to Chicago?

    Hiawatha discussion

@Trogdor - If it helps, there is a railcam here that sees movements of the Hiawatha routes during the day that overlooks the Canal St at-grade crossing. This is where the image above of 90221 came from.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

I have a feeling they won't stay on them heading back to CA (watch me be proved wrong though). It looks like they're just deadheading to Chicago.

Chicago Metra trains arriving and departing Chicago

Yep. Steel Highway has a bunch of cams at that location. One that watches over the CTA line, Ogilvie station, and the Canal at-grade crossing. My favorite cam of these is the Canal one as it sees the frequent Hiawatha routes and the Empire Builder (plus the various movements of Metra UP and...

    Hiawatha discussion

It's been cool to see that the Veterans paint scheme cabbage car has been frequent on the various Hiawatha routes over the past few days.

Best current options for traveling from Chicago to Florida

The only route that I can think of doing Amtrak-wise to get down to Florida from Chicago is to take either the Capitol Limited or Lake Shore Limited to NY/DC and then take one of the silver-based routes down to Florida that way?
