Speculation about remaining life of Superliners

I was an avid Amtrak train rider back in the days when Amfleet cars were used on a few long-distance runs. After riding them a few times, I avoided them like the plague. I don't ever remember riding on a long distance Amfleet coach that was equipped with leg rests. To me, this made them...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

I agree with you, but the lack of sleeper availability on all western Amtrak trains is really the problem. There is a huge demand for sleepers and the prices are, resultingly, sky high. It's a bad situation. The solution is that Amtrak needs more sleeping cars, as quickly as possible.

Trouble on October's first Empire Builder

My wife and I boarded the westbound Empire Builder in Minneapolis on Sept. 29th, bound for a connection with the Coast Starlight in Portland that would take us home to California. Little did we know that both locomotives would fail and we would end up arriving in Portland over 14 hours late...

    Hello from Fabulous Las Vegas!

On Saturday, August 19th, my wife and I are taking the Southwest Chief, via roomette, to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to celebrate her birthday. She was born there and moved to California with her family at the tender age of 12 months. (Note: This is NOT the Las Vegas in which you live!) We have...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

I remember riding Santa Fe's "San Francisco Chief" with my father and younger brother in 1963. We had purchased the one-price meal tickets in advance, and it was a great experience. I was 11 years old at the time and did not like being limited to the child's menu. The waiter said I could...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

Regarding my request for recommendations for a hotel near the Amtrak Minneapolis station, I found while researching the situation that the Amtrak depot is actually in St. Paul. The formal name of the station is "St Paul - Minneapolis Union Station." I didn't know this when I first began...

    Coast Starlight discussion

My wife and I rode the Starlight between San Luis Obispo and Portland in mid-June, with the consist including two sleepers -- one refurbished and the other (the one we were on) showing the wear of decades of use. Sleeper passengers pay a large premium and the first-class cars need to be in...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

I'm traveling to Minneapolis from the West Coast later this month and have been researching hotels near the Amtrak depot there. It seems that most are several miles away, and I am unsure about taxis in the station late at night, or the availability of Uber. Anyone have any information or...

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

Too bad, what can I say. My wife and I took a plane this morning and now I am at home in Paso Robles. If I knew that #11 still operated to Emeryville, with train/bus connections beyond, we would have done it-on today's Coast Starlight.

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

Yeah, maybe the info I received from Amtrak Reservations was wrong. Sometimes people give advice about things they think they know a lot about, but actually know just enough to be dangerous. She was so definite that no sleeper rooms were available until July 9th! I'll be interested to see...

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

When I spoke yesterday with Amtrak reservations, the agent was very emphatic that the Coast Starlight was cancelled this week. I asked if #11 was traveling between Seattle and Emeryville, and she replied "no." This may be incorrect, but I was not in a position to mess around, since I've...

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

Unfortunately, the last leg of our Amtrak adventure seems to have disintegrated. The partial derailment of the Coast Starlight that took place in California July 28th, has caused the train to be cancelled for the next week. My wife and I were originally scheduled to travel on it between...

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

I was originally booked on yesterday's #11 Starlight from Portland to Paso Robles and rebooked for July 2nd. I just received a message from Amtrak saying the July 2 train is cancelled. Anyone know what is going on? This is the conclusion leg of a circle trip that took us to Glacier National...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

I just received a notification from Amtrak that train 11, the southbound Coast Starlight for June 29 is being terminated at Emeryville, thus not serving points such as San Jose. San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles. Does anyone know why? I have reservations to ride it between Eugene, Oregon, and...

    Empire Builder discussion

Unfortunately, I found out about the accordion festival AFTER I had made all my reservations for stops on the trip, of which there are five. I wasn't able to rearrange things, so we are departing Leavenworth one day before the festival begins. Too bad -- it would have been fun. This is my...

    Empire Builder discussion

My wife and I are taking the Empire Builder from Portland to East Glacier, Montana, on June 14th. I've been a passenger on the EB several times before and have always been intrigued by the historic Glacier Park Lodge, which the train stops right in front of. We will stay there several nights...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

This summer my wife and I are traveling on the Empire Builder to St. Cloud, Minnesota. The eastbound train is due there about 6:30 in the morning. We plan to stay in a motel overnight before meeting our friends the next day, who many miles outside town. Can anyone suggest a motel near the St...

    Coast Starlight to Empire Builder?

The dates I was checking to travel from San Luis Obispo on the CS was to leave on 12 or 19 June, then connect with the EB in Portland for the final destination of East Glacier. I checked it on the Amtrak website today and the connection worked! Perhaps someone in Amtrak is looking at...
