    Europe's train woes

Think Amtrak's the only screwed-up rail system in the world? Think again. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/22/world/europe/europe-trains-climate-goals.html

How to get from BUF (Depew) to Niagara Falls Canada Side?

Thanks to all. I suspect that I will not be able to book on one ticket Chicago-Rochester on the Lake Shore Limited and Rochester-Toronto on the Maple Leaf, so will have to book two separate tickets. No idea what the cost will be, as I plan to make this trip in October 2023, more than a year from...

How to get from BUF (Depew) to Niagara Falls Canada Side?

I'm headed to Quebec City from Chicago in October 2023 (that's NEXT year, folks!) to catch a cruise through the St. Lawrence Seaway down to Fort Lauderdale via Boston. Amtrak's website does show the connection from the Lake Shore Limited to the Maple Leaf with that six-hour layover at Depew, but...

    Traveling with a mobility scooter

Many thanks to all, especially JoelKFla, for this minutely detailed information. I have used the H room several times but had had no idea it could be booked online. I have a Pride GoGo Elite Traveller scooter as PaulDobbs does, except it's a 4-wheeler. I'm thinking that when a Superliner H room...

    Traveling with a mobility scooter

The last post here was in 2018. I'm getting myself a travel medical scooter and wonder what the Amtrak experience with that is like in 2022.

    Hearing Loss is a Disability

Just be aware that the world of the not-hearing is immensely diverse and still argues over the proper descriptive terms. I am not Deaf; I was not born deaf and do not use ASL. I am totally and completely deaf, yet there are those in the Deaf world who classify me as "hard of hearing." The term...

Your "bring list" for riding the rails?

Wouldn't it be easier to just share a room with McGyver?

    Checked baggage & platforms?

My apologies to you, PDX. Old retired newsies sometimes are cranky, and I certainly was. You did the right thing.

    Checked baggage & platforms?

Do your due diligence: go to Amtrak.com and check the station listings. I'm surprised a professional journalist feels the need to crowdsource.

7 pounds of pot found on Amtrak passenger

Maybe the Amtrak cops in Portland looked up Dudenbostel's Wisconsin rap sheet before train departure and figured that if the bust went down in Wisconsin the perp wouid then face a third-strike sentence.

    City of New Orleans Dining

Indeed there will be a late meal. Sometimes they'll seat you in the diner even before the train departs, sometimes a few minutes after.

    Current state of Amtrak's diners

I'm not certain about this, but I think the individual steaks (and maybe other entrees) may be partially cooked with the sous-vide method, then removed from their plastic and then finished to order on the grill. It's been a while since I've been in a Superliner galley.

    Current state of Amtrak's diners

I believe that most if not all Amtrak LD trains use the "sous vide" method of cooking, in which meats and vegetables are cooked slowly at a precise temperature for a precise time, then instantly packaged in plastic and refrigerated for transport to the commissaries, then to the trains. Each meal...

We Have A Potential Code Black, Boys and Girls...

"Thermic event" sounds like a favorite weather term in my neck of the woods (Chicago area): "winter precipitation event." "Ice" and "snow" are no longer adequate. How about "short caused by an icicle"? Did the original thread title omit the comma? Whoops!

What to expect on California Zepher Westbound

Once two young women in a raft shucked their duds and stood in all their pink glory as the train went by slowly. Even the little old ladies in the lounge car were laughing. Now that was a salute.

Most Photogenic Bridges Used by Amtrak?

Harpers Ferry originally was Harper's Ferry, but the possessive apostrophe is still used by many literate folks. Same with Peggys Cove near Halifax. It was originally Peggy's Cove and there can be pub-clearing waterfront brawls over the proper spelling.

Your "bring list" for riding the rails?

$2 bills are indeed legit, as are dollar coins. They're unusual, yes, but I've left $2 bills as tips and the servers were happy. Methinks that waiter was pulling the poster's leg.
