    Prioritizing freight over passenger trains

I've wondered myself why Amtrak doesn't have relief crews staged for immediate deployment when operating crews go off the law. Maybe it has something to do with the cost of paying folks to sit around doing nothing on the off chance that they might sometime be needed?

Just 'Cause We Need Another Dining Car Thread...

OK, you got me . . . which "F" word is that? (If it has asterisks in it, well, never mind.) This entire thread has been fascinating. It goes to show, I think, that everyone has a singular view of identity politics. Let's all go to the dining car and discuss this issue further over some New York...

    Amtrak passenger claims discrimination

Funny, I used to work with lots of white people who had racial chips on their shoulders. We all know people who will take offense at the smallest perceived slight.

    Interesting Accomodations Situation on #5

It would be interesting to learn if any of us on this forum have figured out how to beat the Amtrak ticketing computers. For instance, one could buy a ticket from Glenwood Springs to Fort Morgan, as the agents in my earlier post said was possible, but get off the train at Denver one stop...

    Interesting Accomodations Situation on #5

I recall several years ago the Amtrak agents at Glenwood Springs complaining that they were unable to ticket local coach riders from there to Denver, even though Grand Junction agents could do that for their locals to Denver, until the day of departure. In the summers the trains were full, and...

    Amtrak passenger claims discrimination

This is only speculation, but possibly the conductor was a shirty Jack-in-office, as conductors often have been throughout history, the plaintiff drew the wrong conclusion, and things snowballed from there. Probably Amtrak will settle the suit for a piddling figure, as it usually does, well...

Empire Builder or California Zephyr to West Coast

Clearly the solution is to take all three trains: the CZ westbound, the CS north, the EB east. That's what I'd do. Matter of fact, that's what I think I'll do as soon as I have enough Guest Rewards points.

Dining & accommodation cars, should you tip?

I guess you can say it in a quote; the quoting machinery doesn't follow the original-post machinery?

Dining & accommodation cars, should you tip?

You can't say Soup **** on this forum? (Later. I guess you can't. I guess you'll have to say Soup Member of the ****onalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei instead.) (Even later. No, you can't even say that. Maybe you can say Soup People Who Say Heil Hitler instead.)

    Whats up with EB #7 & #8

There will be no delays after Dec. 21. The world ends that day. :giggle:

Just 'Cause We Need Another Dining Car Thread...

In my crowd (urban, educated, professional or academic, diverse), "oriental" is considered potentially offensive and therefore best avoided, but its casual use is considered not necessarily overtly racist, just ignorant. Calling a Lakota or Ojibwa a "Native American" will often elicit a...

Possible abandonment of Canadian National into Chicago?

I was about to whack one of the posters for referring to Mayor Daley . . . and then saw the date of the post. Resurrecting old threads gets me confused.

Any Tips for a Young Woman Riding Alone?

Just be nice to the little old bald-headed grandpa in glasses smiling at you from across the aisle. (That would be me.)

    alcohol in coach

There could be a Mile and a 3/4 High Club for those who reach the pinnacle at the 9,278-foot mark in the Moffat Tunnel, highest point on Amtrak. On the other hand, whoopee at that altitude without oxygen tanks might not be advisable.

    alcohol in coach

In my experience (not personal experience, he said primly) plenty of sexual hijinks go on everywhere on the train. Folks employ the bathrooms. Folks hide themselves under blankets at 2 in the morning. I once opened the shower door in a sleeper to find a young couple engaged in amorous pursuits...

    alcohol in coach

As well as a thread about boozing and the rules on the train, there has been a thread about smoking and the rules on the train. But there has not yet been a thread about *** and the rules on the train. Does anyone wish to start one?

Use of Vapo or Electronic Cigarettes on Amtrak?

I smoked my last coffin nail on August 4, 1975, after a 20-year two-pack-a-day habit, and cannot for the life of me understand how anyone can start smoking these days. But I have great sympathy for those who have tried and tried to quit. It took me three tries, and the third came during a...

New Talgos moving westward for testing

Right. Correction appreciated. Serves me right for living in Illinois.

New Talgos moving westward for testing

No wonder the Milwaukee Southern ran that engine long hood forward. The engineers needed protection from those crazy Wisconsin drivers. (I live in Illinois, therefore it is not only OK but also required for me to make fun of the cheeseheads.)

Fare increase closer to departure ?

I start watching fares on Amsnag (http://amwatch.hostzi.com/amSnag.php) about five to six months ahead of departure time and usually pull the trigger three months ahead. I don't travel by train in the summer months or during holidays. If you use Amsnag to examine and "predict" fares you will...
