Strangest Things You've seen in Coach

Or we could all shuck duds and keep him company. But the car heat would have to be turned up to at least 78 degrees.

    Can you recognize it?

Best bets in the cafe car?

Thank you! I was right: those sandwiches ARE a triumph of the embalmer's art! (Funeral directors often keep the dear departed on ice while waiting for the ground to thaw.) ;)

    Train horns

Coincidentally, a few weeks ago I took a photo of a California Zephyr's P42 horn array from the overhead walkway at Emeryville. Here it is.

    Henry Kissinger rides Amtrak

Reports are that Newt will pack it in sometime Thursday and presumably will lose his Secret Service bodyguards so the issue will be moot. —Henry the Other K

Best bets in the cafe car?

Take a look at the sell-by dates on the sandwich wrappers. They may astonish you. On an Illinois Lincoln Service train in March I had a sandwich whose wrapper was stamped with a date in September. Some Amfood is a triumph of the embalmer's art.

    Auto Train Mysterious Death

These incidents are not uncommon. Back in the early '90s a Zephyr train chief told a sad story about an elderly woman, presumably an Alzheimer's sufferer, he found trying to open a sleeper vestibule door while the train was at speed. She said she wanted to go out to her patio. He found her...

    Roomette Etiquette

A T-shirt, athletic shorts, and hard-soled slippers does it for me. Others choose sweats, especially in the winter. Once I saw a very large older fellow in bunny-patterned PJs.

Very Off Topic - name your temp right now

"What is your temperature where you are right now?" you ask. In the house my temperature is 98.6. Sometimes it is as low as 97 and as high as 99.2. When I'm doing lawn work outside it might go a little higher than that, but a spell in the shade with a gin and tonic gets it right back down where...

    "Zephyr" now an updated ebook

Thanks to all for your kind words! Zephyr17: I haven't yet researched print-on-demand paperback "tree-books," but I am told by other authors that sales rarely recover the costs of production. I need to crunch the numbers on this. Stay tuned. MaineRider: Frimbo is great, isn't he? I reread that...

How does one get to ride in the locomotive cab?

Generally, one had to be a serious member of the mainstream media at work on a substantial project contracted with a major magazine or book publisher in order to score a cab ride. At least that was the way it was for me. It was not easy, because a road foreman of engines had to go along to keep...

    New Amtrak Food Contract

I believe Glenwood Springs Amtrak is actually staffed by three people -- the agent (a woman), the baggage person (also a woman), and a swing baggage/agent (either gender) who subs during vacations and sometimes on days off when the station loads are particularly heavy. (On occasion only one...

    "Zephyr" now an updated ebook

It will be a month or so before an iBook version is ready. But you can read it right now on your iPad or iPhone if you download the free Kindle app for the iPad/iPhone and buy the book from Amazon Kindle. There's also a free Nook app so you can read Nook ebooks on the same devices.

It already is discounted to $6.99 from the $8.99 I'd originally planned to ask.

    "Zephyr" now an updated ebook

Thanks to all. Maybe 9-10 per cent of the book is new material, mostly in the Epilogue that tells about the changes since 1991-92. About half the photos are new ones. Google Play Books: I haven't yet gotten that far. The book's out for the Kindle and Nook, and I need to prepare it for Apple...

    "Zephyr" now an updated ebook

If I may be permitted a blatant commercial announcement: My 1994 book "Zephyr: Tracking a Dream Across America" has been updated with new photographs and a new epilogue and republished in Kindle and Nook ebook formats. (Other formats are on the way.) Details are at LINK. This forum was...
