    Here We Go Again...

This topic is perhaps more important than at first might appear. The other day I was chatting with Sandi, the Amtrak agent at Glenwood Springs, about the upcoming e-book edition of my 1994 book "Zephyr," and I asked why passenger traffic at GSC had not increased between 1991-2, when I traveled...

    Small dog on amtrak

What everybody said. DON'T TRY IT. YOUR FRIEND WILL BE SORRY.

    Route Guides

It occurred to me today that I haven't seen a route guide by a sleeper room window in quite a while. Has Amtrak done away with them? Sometimes I don't even see timetables.

    LAX and Philippe's

Just checked philippes.com. Trainman74 is right. Everybody calls Philippe "Philippe's," including Philippe's people. (Say that fast ten times.) It's like Soldier Field in Chicago. True Chicagoans call it "Soldier's Field." And I used to be a copy editor, too.

Movies on the Coast Starlight Pacific Parlour Car

I understand from older posts on other forums that movies were shown to kiddies at 3 pm and to adults at 8pm in the Pacific Parlour Cars lower-level "theater". Still happening?

    Is CZ Really That Rundown?

I'm riding the CZ Chicago-Emeryville and back in a bedroom (with a stopover in Glenwood Springs) four weeks from today and will report back on 1. the quality of service and 2. the quality of the hardware. But the report will be valid only for the particular trips. Other rides may be better or...

Amtrak's top four (or more) customer complaint problem areas?

In my experience in the last two years, on-board service seems to have improved a great deal, both in the sleepers and in the dining car. The nasty or absent attendant can still be found, but hopefully is growing rarer. A recent Amtrak employee publication said the railroad has been sending some...

Enhanced dining service on the Capitol Limited

Media Relations tells me that there are no plans to re-convert the CCC cars into conventional diners, that they have plenty of service life left in them. Sorry for suggesting that there were recent rebuilds.

Enhanced dining service on the Capitol Limited

Thanks. I guess the change was made sometime in 2011. I'm curious about the kitchen crew -- does the food service specialist wash the dishes as well as assist the chef, or is there a third crew member down in the galley for that purpose? Am working on a piece for Trainweb, hence my questions.

Enhanced dining service on the Capitol Limited

I've just returned from a Chicago-Washington round trip on the Capitol Limited. My last trip had been in November, 2010, and I was delighted to see that Amtrak has added "enhanced dining service" (china and genuine napery instead of plastic and paper, plus an extra server and maybe food...

    Great Migration exhibit

AMTRAK SHOWCASES THE GREAT MIGRATION EXHIBIT IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH Exhibit featured on MyBlackJourney.com website WASHINGTON - In celebration of Black History Month, Amtrak is featuring the Great Migration of African Americans exhibit on their MyBlackJourney.com (MBJ.com) microsite...

    Roomettes

The car cleaners rarely do much of a job vacuuming under the roomette seats. I wouldn't put anything delicate or easily soiled there. Fine for shoes, though.

Another Train 59 vs vehicle incident, this in Yazoo City

Condolences all around. Old folks gamely hang on to what remains of their youth, no matter the consequences. It's often very difficult for families to step in and take away the car keys that represent the last shreds of independence.

    Staying in Glacier Park

A good place to start would be at http://www.nationalparkreservations.com/glacier.php?gclid=CJynl4PB6K0CFYvRKgodsmTT7g Have been to Glacier with my family three times, and loved it. Best to make those lodge reservations NOW because they fill up early and fast.

    Capitol Limited service alert

Thanks to all for their replies. I'm not so worried anymore. I've never been subject to a bustitution and hope never to be (but expect I will someday).

Will my GPS (bought for the car) work on the train?

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I've just purchased a GPS (Pentax) that fits in the hot shoe of my Pentax K-5. It embeds lat/long, altitude, UTC time, and compass direction into the "metadata" of the digital file of each photo. With the proper software you can locate on Google Earth the...

    Capitol Limited service alert

I'm heading from CHI to WAS on the Capitol Ltd on Thursday, Feb. 9. There is a trackwork service alert for the eastbound Cap to the effect that Monday through Thursday, if the train leaves Cleveland (scheduled 108 am) after 330am, passengers for Washington will be bused to WAS from Pittsburgh. I...

    Clueless Amtrak agent :)

I'm pretty short for my age, too, Johnny, and I'm 71. You do look like you know what you're doing.

    Worst Passenger Rail Experience Ever?

Alas, irony closes on Saturday night. It was not meant to annoy you, Mr. Menhennet. It was a dig at someone else. While we are on the subject of job nomenclature, are the TA-Coaches, TA-Sleepers and Service Attendants all cross-qualified in their jobs? In other words, could a TA-Coach bid on a...

    Best Passenger Rail Experience Ever?

EMDF9A, do you mean you have a couple of fruitcakes left from 1968? Boy, those delicacies are, well, *durable,* shall we say?
