Watching the Weather from a train

I’ve always wanted to be on a train during inclement weather. The sound of the rain hitting the car, the snowy vistas, etc etc etc…I live in Monterey,CA now so weather is 60F and foggy for most of the year and I’ve never experienced anything more than a light rain or a snow flurry on the...

Canadian New Years Eve…what can I expect?

Well I decided after realizing I needed a neg Covid test to get back into the US that getting into Winnipeg late night and flying back to SFO in the early morning wasn’t such a good idea with all the stress of getting even a rapid test would cause. so I extended to Toronto for a couple of...

Nostalgic and Historic Amtrak Stations Still Used Today

These are my home stations…Salinas CA on the Coast Starlight…where I live today. Longview or Marshall TX on the Texas Eagle...where I grew up. All a bit old and with the “church pew” seating. The Texas stations have two identical waiting rooms…one a legacy of the “white only” from the Jim Crow...

Canadian New Years Eve…what can I expect?

I have always wanted to take the Canadian…and I love the snow. So I have a trip booked Vancouver to Winnipeg leaving New Years Eve 3.00pm Fri and arriving Winnipeg 10.00pm Jan 2 Sun. Wish I could go to Toronto but haven’t the time. I’m an American flying SFO to Vancouver Dec 30 and back from...

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

I can’t speak to recent delays, but I am from central and East Texas and live near San Francisco, so have made that Texas Eagle and Coast Starlight connection 7 times in the last four years. Made them all…once we got to LA at 9.50a for the 10.10 am but made it. I’ve had good luck looks like👍

Locked the bathrooms on Texas Eagle

Yes…it is the one next to the engine and does indeed have a door on the floor. Makes perfect sense and would have never even noticed that otherwise. Thanks🙂

Locked the bathrooms on Texas Eagle

they were open in the morning. Maybe not related…but about 2.00 am around Poplar Bluff MO there was a giant stink bomb. The sewage smell literally woke everyone up. My parents called me in a panic from their bedroom. It’s like the whole system belched or well…farted…in the middle of the...

Ridin* on the City of New Orleans

Yes staffed by a wonderful lady named Amy. your post reminded me to order a Bloody Mary. No secret spices but she did bring lots of pepper packs and suggested I put them in. Mom is saying how ”everyone on the train is just so nice”. This OBS staff is really good.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

The poor Texas Eagle. That stubby little 4 to 5 car consist from San Antonio to Chicago is IMO the worst overnight in the system. Tired cars, tired and uniformly cranky OBS, we are out of this and that, this bathroom is closed, coffee maker is broken, no sightseeing car…I know…if you don’t...

Ridin* on the City of New Orleans

And I’ve got to say, a very pleasant experience. I’m with my 80 year old mom and dad. I swear they cannot pack less than four bags and quite possibly a steamer trunk for an overnight trip. They are in room C and I am in roomette 5. I had the best redcap experience ever. Mom has a mobility...

Locked the bathrooms on Texas Eagle

Currently on the Texas Eagle Longview, TX to Chicago. Consist is an Engine, a sleeper, a cafe car, a coach on top with the baggage underneath, then a full coach. A five car train 22! So sad…. I know it’s the Eagle, knew what I was in for. No SSL, no Diner, Flex, etc…. but we’ve a full...

    Slidell Loophole Question

i had to google it but has anyone looked recently? Is this still a thing? I saw Slidell to DC on Cresent, DC to Chicago, Chicago to LA…that alone was 2k and that with coach DC to Chicago. 96 hours. The loop is not complete. the last entry here is 2008. What was this trip historically? I...

Negative long distance trip review article based lack of value and inedible food

Harummph. And i I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but I would do that in a heartbeat. And I know the LSL is…well…not a great train. By the same token I can wake up at the buttcrack of dawn, pay some bleary eyed Uber or cabby to take me to the airport….get stuck in morning traffic...
