Best tourist train in New England open in May?

Hi all, My husband and I want to splurge on a dome car trip for our 30th anniversary. Is Conway Scenic Railway Mountaineer any good? Bad reviews online but not sure they took the Mountaineer. What about Mt. Washington Cog? What else within 5 hour drive of Rhode Island? So many of these only run...

A round trip on the Vermonter. A scenic gem

Good idea, though it hasn’t changed a bit, except there was snow in 2002. Really nice traditional main street with most of the civic buildings across the common on the uphill side, like Bristol RI

A round trip on the Vermonter. A scenic gem

This trip worked out great! I will write a trip report with pictures when I get a chance. Meanwhile anyone considering this, winter is lovely along the two rivers and the canals. You can see much more river when there aren’t any leaves. Hampton Inn was very good, free breakfast was vast and...

A round trip on the Vermonter. A scenic gem

We saw it all today on the 55! Beautiful light, and the railfan window is worth the extra BC fare. In Springfield now, golden light.

A round trip on the Vermonter. A scenic gem

Between Burlington and St. Albans, we are the only passengers on a five-car train. This is great!

We will wave at anyone with a camera! Very excited to wake up in a town I photographed exactly 20 years ago. There was plenty of snow on the ground then and as I recall it was freaking cold. Thanks for Ephemeris, that looks awesome. I am a natural light photographer so it’s possibly very useful.

    Amtrak delays

Still sitting, been an hour. Sounds like it may have been two cars that happened to meet at the crossing head on. Crew here does not have update on the time. Aah walkie talkie going off, OK, sounds like we can creep by the accident site now. Railrat shows we can make up half the delay by the...

A round trip on the Vermonter. A scenic gem

We are on the Vermonter now. I’m glad we didn’t pay for BC on this NB leg, as the coaches up front are practically empty, and BC is practically full. We are dining in the cafe car now, the only non-crew in here, very peaceful. Kudos to crew member who found my iPad on a random seat (I didn’t...

    Amtrak delays

Anyone else on the Vermonter NB right now or know what happened up ahead? We are on a hold just below Brattleboro. They announced a collision at a crossroads, two vehicles. Hope everyone is all right! Don’t know whether it was train, trains, automobile, automobiles. We are on Vermonter NB...

Lesser known Railroad Museums in small towns

I was very impressed with the Wilmington (NC) Railroad Museum, just visited two months ago. Incredible HO layout, and plenty of full size RR displays. They also have some cool used models for sale (cheap) in their gift shop. You can walk there from the historic downtown.

    The virtues of Acela

For me it's not about just looking out one side and seeing a scene go by. It's about experiencing the train moving through the landscape. Therefore the ultimate is to see out both sides of the train simultaneously, as you can from the rear or middle of a regular cafe car, or of course from the...

    The virtues of Acela

No booths? A few stools only? Not for us. Thanks

    The virtues of Acela

Oh you did not. The young people don't pay any attention to us. 🤣 There are a few fancy cafes and stores but mostly it's a charming mishmash of everything from dive bars to mom-n-pop clothing and gift shops to pizza or taco places. Many different cuisines actually. The architecture and street...

    The virtues of Acela

Ooh, really? Guess I need to take this sometime! Thanks. I do usually sit in the cafe car. Is there a difference between the regular cafe car and the Acela?

The effect of the potential rail strike on Amtrak

Thank you! Greatly appreciate this knowledge. It's a bucket list trip, especially now that my husband's health makes longish train trips without using sleepers (hotel at one end) the best way for us to ride trains. It will be 19 degrees up at St. Albans but hey, we have parkas. Hope the bill and...

The effect of the potential rail strike on Amtrak

We have Vermonter NB Dec 7 and SB on the 8th. Do you think they would cancel that? We have connection to New Haven on the NER, but if that gets canceled, we can drive there to get the Vermonter.

A round trip on the Vermonter. A scenic gem

You wrote that at the exact time I was upgrading to Business Class. 😅 So, just now I got through a very helpful agent by yelling "Agent" "Person" at the robot on the 800 number, and only had to wait one minute till someone picked up. It seemed to be the only way to get the upgrade for just one...

A round trip on the Vermonter. A scenic gem

THANK YOU! Huge help. If we can figure out how to upgrade only the SAB-NHV segment, we'll probably do it. Those don't look like the best cafe windows because of the luggage rack, but I like the single seats so it's easier to look over from a double seat to the other side.

A round trip on the Vermonter. A scenic gem

I checked the only B&B (luxury) near the station in St. Albans, and it would be $270 mid-week early December and you only get one bed. Hampton Inn it is! Please tell me about the BC though. They put seats into the rear half of a cafe car? Is that the half with the highest windows, is that why...
