That is also a good place to do pushups off the side bar, and other exercises.

Old Newbie seeking advice for HO Pennsylvania

That's great advice. We'd have to design small in our house anyway. No standable basement or attic... For twenty years I photographed Main Streets all over the country, and have hundreds of color pictures of blocks of storefronts. I'm thinking of using small prints of them as a 2D backdrop to a...

Old Newbie seeking advice for HO Pennsylvania

I'm afraid. What if I really get into it and start competing with their ultra-cool layouts, buying tons of stuff, making my own mountains, etc. The problem is, I'm not retired and don't have a basement for a layout, and don't want to abandon my husband for a club. (He might enjoy it too, but he...

Old Newbie seeking advice for HO Pennsylvania

Birthday List: widows and orphans, moonshiners, mooners, outhouses, guys sitting on logs crapping, set of five prisoners in striped outfits, at least fifty hoboes, etc.

Much appreciated! I hereby repay you with Apponaug Color and Hobby. Sadly they are not walking distance from the PVD or KIN station, and since driving thirty minutes in Rhode Island and/or crossing a bridge means you have to stay overnight, bring your jammies. Youse is welcome.

Old Newbie seeking advice for HO Pennsylvania

We had our family Christmas yesterday and I had previously dropped heavy hints. My husband got me this Light Pacific locomotive (Mantua, new, eBay) and my brother got me the PRR P70 (Broadway Limited, rjstrains, new). I love them! Guess I should get some track, huh. I do have a question, is this...

As a consolation prize for ending up looking out the same side both ways (if you can't control it) you're likely to see different things anyway. Different daylight hours, different light and shadow directions, different weather, different wildlife. And you should be in the sightseer lounge as...

    No Coach food on 19(12)

Cheezits are really good. We discovered this a couple weeks ago when the Acela lounge in DC supplied them for free. But trail mix would be better - more protein. In our fear of Cafe Car meltdowns, we traveled with many Kind bars and even some Mary Jane's camper bag foods and mini kettle. Didn't...

Who is drawn to slow train travel?

PS Someone did mention that the Cardinal had to stop because of downed trees in Indiana. Probably everything in Kentucky and neighboring states was messed up. Really terrible.

Who is drawn to slow train travel?

No that was Mayfield, southwest part of the state. Maysville is in the northeast near Cincinnati. The tornado cluster path was definitely headed up there but did not get that far. So tragic for Mayfield, absolutely flattened.

Who is drawn to slow train travel?

We did the Cardinal last week RT just for the ride. It turned out the full day in Maysville KY was also outstanding, but that wasn't why we went. On vacations, we always count the train trip as part of the vacation, not just a way to get to a vacation. When people compare costs of sleepers to...

Who is drawn to slow train travel?

The way the train motion feels! Nothing like it. Even the clickety-clack on a slow old route is great! The horn! Not for sleeping so much, but the rest of the time. Some of us _just_love_trains.

    Question about cross-country train trip

Make sure to go to a baseball game. Minor League ballparks are also fun, and much cheaper.

    Question about cross-country train trip

That is a lot of cities, it would be too much for me and I love cities. (But, I'm 43 years older than you.) I've spent several days in each of those cities, and prefer Chicago and San Francisco among them, but also Seattle and Portland. My favorite big cities in the US are New Orleans...

    Question about cross-country train trip

I have talked to other visitors from Europe, or even the Eastern US, who find our Great Plains more astounding than the mountains. I'm from wooded Pennsylvania, and my strongest memories from the SW Chief and the Empire Builder are of the Plains. The sky is always changing, the light is amazing...

Who is drawn to slow train travel?

One day we were on the NE Regional and started noticing tall people. My husband said, What's with all the tall people? Finally we said, duh, they are too tall to fly, their legs literally won't fit.

Thought they weren't putting strangers next to you in coach because of Covid...? That it was actually good to travel solo? Where did I get that idea, sounds like I was wrong.

    Question about cross-country train trip

They really need to make the good end of the Cafe car available to paying customers, whether coach or sleeper customers. It was frankly infuriating last week to see all the Reserved for Crew signs on the excellent booths (half not being used at all) on the longer all-window end, while we were...

    Question about cross-country train trip

You are right! My picture of the train has that exact same yellow cast. :)
