You've made a good start by finding this discussion forum. Now I suggest you join Amtrak Guest Rewards website. https://www.amtrak.com/guestrewards/home.html It costs nothing, and the agents are very helpful. They have a call-back service so you don't have to wait on hold forever if they are busy.

It seems the whole problem/misunderstanding emanated from poor service from the Amtrak agent in Atlanta. (S)he should have explained that the SL runs only three times a week and asked if their return dates were flexible. That poor communication might have cost Amtrak some substantial ticket...

At this point of Amtrak-generated insanity, I would just call Amtrak Guest Rewards and ask them to book it for you, and see if they can.

I realize this might not be of interest, but have you thought of returning to LAX via the Crescent and Sunset Limited to avoid any route or stopover duplications? There would be only one connection, and you can time it so it's just one overnight or three in New Orleans.

I do agree that's nice for the tardy passenger, but it's also nice to be able to rely on the on-time performance records that the European trains achieve. So I guess it's a case of choose your poison. :rolleyes:

Agree. I did it last mid-April. Lovely, although it was perhaps a week ort so early for real Spring. I would also suggest, instead of the Capital, look at the LAS out of New York. It may be more expensive, and I don't know how connections would work., but it is a scenic ride.

How will you be doing the DC-Chicago out and back segments? If you haven't done the Cardinal, I highly recommend it for one of those segments. The foliage should be coming out beautifully by then.

Your right side views will be very nice north of Santa Barbara, and especially through the Cuesta Pass. Your trip sounds like a wonderful way to spend the Christmas week. And I suppose you were fortunate to get out of ORD yesterday, from what I've been seeing on the weather news. Bon voyage!

That's a great story and, I beg to differ, more dramatic than my dawn ride. Our driver was totally non-communicative, while your two really brought you into the spirit of things. Lesson learned for me: Always carry apples on caleche rides!
