Texas Eagle and Cardinal Trip Report.. and missing checked baggage

Happy to hear you got your bag. Good work! I think the takeaway lesson, based on your and my experience and those of other posters here, is that checked bags - at least those checked in Chicago involving train transfers - won't always go on our trains but will usually end up where they're...

    Very hostile Amtrak article

Does Forbes publish Letters To the Editor or an OP ED column? If so, please send this excellent rebuttal to them (if you haven't already done so).

    Very hostile Amtrak article

Interesting article. I'm looking forward to reading a rebuttal from Jim Matthews. Just one thought regarding the long distance routes: what percentage of passengers are hobbyist riders going long distances vs. passengers going shorter distances where departure and destination stops are not...

Salinas [SNS] is closed on the weekends. No checked baggage.

Do you mean the Superliner bunk is not wide enough, when lowered, to hold your bike safely without it falling down on your head? :)

Salinas [SNS] is closed on the weekends. No checked baggage.

Are you traveling sleeper or coach? If the former and you're traveling solo, can you fit it on the upper bunk? I can certainly see why you would not want to leave it unattended on the vestibule luggage rack downstairs.

    Gardner articles this week

Exactly. Most of us on this site (me included) are self-described rail fans. Which means, I suppose, that we are looking for a quality travel experience rather than efficient, affordable transportation. Hence the entertaining and descriptive trip reports and comments comparing Amtrak and VIA...

    Gardner articles this week

Hi Zephyr, I'm not trying to be ornery, just interested in the basis for your comment. What is it that VIA lacks in service because it is not founded in a statute that Amtrak has gained in service because it is? VIA does seem to be a better run operation even if it can't provide optimum...

    Question re itinerary/connection/layover in NYP

There are several hotels around $130 - $160 listed on Trip Advisor near Moynihan. some indicated at 0.2 or 0.3 miles away. That would be your safest bet if you can swing the cost. Here is one link...

    California Zephyr: consist?

But don't forget, you also have the observation car (if you can find a seat).

    California Zephyr: consist?

I vote for the north side, for the view of Donner Lake. the Delta and Bay. But then again, IIRC, the view of charming Truckee is on the south side. But for that, you can just go into the vestibule to look out the other window.

Options in the event of missing train

Ahh1 Good to know. Thanks for the clarification. Now I have to wonder why?

Options in the event of missing train

The following may help you cancel your ticket, assuming you'll have Internet access at Dublin airport. If it does, you might be able to avoid total forfeiture of your ticket price, and then maybe you can try to book a later train online. However, this won't provide any ability to negotiate...

59 The City of New Orleans departing 7/21/22

I fondly remember my 2008 trip on CONO. The roadbed was hella rough, but I slept well after a friendly bourbon fueled discussion with an old African American gentleman in the dining/club car. We had indeed gone more than 500 miles when the day was done. We passed through a small town in...

Texas Eagle and Cardinal Trip Report.. and missing checked baggage

I don't k now how far you are from Wilmington station, but if you're having trouble getting through on the phone, can you just drive over there and have a look for yourself? And before they decide it's abandoned luggage and ship it off somewhere? Just for future reference, there are some great...

Texas Eagle and Cardinal Trip Report.. and missing checked baggage

An Amtrak agent explained to me that in my case, since the CL left a couple of hours before the Cardinal and could still connect to my Crescent, they sent them that way because I checked my bag in Chicago well before either train was scheduled to depart and they wanted to keep the baggage area...

Texas Eagle and Cardinal Trip Report.. and missing checked baggage

Have you checked again with Wilmington baggage claim? Your bag might have arrived on a different train. I checked a bag in Chicago on the Cardinal to Atlanta. It was not on the train at the transfer point in Charlottesville. I had to go on to Atlanta without it (I thought). But the bag had been...

Safety and environmental issues with Amtrak's Flex Dining concept

I wasn't thinking necessarily an Amtrak operation. Aren't there commercial recycling operations at, at least, major cities where Amtrak routes terminate or pass through? In an y event, Amtrak's Sustainability Report for 2019 reports on this. (Not too impressive a performance IMO). Look at Page...

Safety and environmental issues with Amtrak's Flex Dining concept

Question: What happens to Amtrak dining trash once it leaves the train? Is it possible that it goes through recycling elsewhere before the dregs are sent to landfill? Maybe Amtrak finds that more cost-effective than setting up separate recycle bins in every car throughout the system.
