Contingency planning for disaster avoidance and recovery at Amtrak

I imagine also that the government requires Amtrak to create emergency and disaster recovery strategies at the corporate level and push them down to operating units for development of specific plans which I hope, would include testing plans. This article from 2012 sheds some light. I found...

Contingency planning for disaster avoidance and recovery at Amtrak

Jis, I think your second paragraph answers your question in the first. However, the time to to figure out how to “keep the passengers safe and fed etc.”, (and I would add rescued if necessary) is before something happens, not once something happens. Sure, the plans won’t be airtight...

Contingency planning for disaster avoidance and recovery at Amtrak

I see. But even if freight dispatch is responsible for whether the train stops or goes, Surely Amtrak must have some worst-case contingency plans, no? Or am I being naive? Of course, I suppose not much can be done if a Superliner gets hit by a tornado.

Contingency planning for disaster avoidance and recovery at Amtrak

This may not be the right thread to query this, but, speaking of high winds, during my recent CZ eastbound trip a day after the severe tornado activity in the mid-west April 11 and 12, I was wondering how Amtrak would handle a situation where a train was warned it was headed into or was already...

Sunset Limited - any interesting scenery, specific side to look out?

I have ridden the SL twice, both east to west and both on the south side in a roomette. The views were spectacular, and the highlight on my first trip in 2008 (IIRC) was a spectacular lightning show on the southern horizon at twilight.

If it's a cab company, surely it has a phone number?

Lower priced Sleeper for single travelers

Comparing apples to apples, Via Toronto to Vancouver takes four nights (about 86 hours or over 3-1/2 days on one train. Amtrak WAS to SEA takes three nights and a train change (CL a tad over 20 hours and EB 58 hours for a total of 78 hours or 3-1/4 days, longer if you factor in CHI transfer...

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle Sleeper Transfer?

Same thing happened to me, as I previously posted elsewhere. I took my original pdf printout showing roomette and my newer pdf showing bedroom when I boarded at NIB. Conductor told me he already knew I was in bedroom D, so I kept mum and enjoyed the extra space. No upcharge.

    Checked Baggage (luggage) discussion

s an afterthought, this issue is a prime example of why this Forum is such an excellent source for information about traveling on Amtrak. I have learned and continue to learn from it over the years. And it is one of the most civilized discussion forums I have encountered in terms of politeness...

    Checked Baggage (luggage) discussion

Thanks for your sentiments, but I wasn't really worried, just a little woeful, but I had over five hours layover in CVS and drowned my woe in oysters and sancerre at Public Fish and Oyster House, thanks to some previous recommendations on this forum. :p And, had I known what I know now about...

    Checked Baggage (luggage) discussion

In April, I checked my bag in Chicago through to Atlanta. I showed my ticket, which was on the Cardinal, connecting in CVS to the Crescent. I checked the baggage ticket in Chicago, and it said ATL (Atlanta). But this being my first time checking a bag on connecting trains, and being a little...

Coffee on the Superliner sleeper cars

Coffee was available in my sleeper on #6 out of EMY April 13. And it was surprisingly flavorful. :D

Per my dictated notes on #50 en route to Charlottesville April 17, the SCA advised me our consist was 2 locos, 3 coaches, café car, 2 sleepers (1 reserved for crew), baggage car.

    Rude Amtrak employees

When boarding #1 in New Iberia a couple of weeks ago, and being the only passenger to do so, I had positioned myself and bags way too far forward on the platform. I guess I wanted to make sure the engineer saw me. Anyway, the conductor signaled the stop so that I had to hoof it back with my bags...

Crossing border to Seattle from Vancouver

Yes! And a scenic ride to boot. Hopefully, you won't have a ton of luggage. Here is a video of your trip. Your portion of the ride will end at about the 7 minute mark. The second video is the same trip going the other way. You get much more spectacular views of my home town. So maybe you...

I see on their website that Onewheels have top speeds of 16 - 19 mph, depending on the model and can tale up to +/- two hours to recharge. Is this the best way to sightsee a new city - browsing, shopping, restaurants, jazz, etc.? Just throwing that out there; I have nothing against Onewheels...

    Leaving plane at intermediate stop?

I'm sorry, but your argument is nothing but deflection from the issue we're discussing. In ay event, as the saying goes, two wrongs don't make a right.

I had the same experience in Charlottesville. $10 while I waited for my connection from the Cardinal to the Crescent.

    Superliner Bedroom C?

I was in the same bedroom in the same car on the same train (different date, of course ;) ) and liked it a lot. So you probably fared OK. The lower berth was pretty wide. Happy Honeymoon!
