BREAKING NEWS: Wisconsin Purchises Two Talgo Sets

You won't find much of a bigger opponent of Governor Doyle than me. (the only things I agree with him on are trains and cigarettes) But I have yet to see him or any other politician using the 220 mph top speed as some sort of selling point. None of the articles have mentioned the 220 mph top...

    More on Wisconsin trains

I'd say Wisconsin has a 60/40 shot at getting the funds, which is pretty good considering that applications are about 10x the available funds. The Milwaukee-Madison route has been studied and I believe is ready for final engineering and construction. Not many other projects can say that.

BREAKING NEWS: Wisconsin Purchises Two Talgo Sets

So you're saying that instead we should buy a train set that can only go as fast as the current track allows? So then what when you upgrade the track? Buy new trains?

    More on Wisconsin trains

I don't question that people will ride the Madison train. I'm just saying that getting this train running is far from certain, especially in the timeline given. If Wisconsin is not awarded about $0.5 billion of the $8 billion in high-speed-rail money, the state will simply not have the money...

    More on Wisconsin trains

I noticed that they said there will be no cafe car. That seems odd, especially with the plan to go to Madison and beyond. I'm disappointed that they're only "studying" bike racks. You'd think government officials would understand by now that bicycling and transit are complimentary. As for...

BREAKING NEWS: Wisconsin Purchises Two Talgo Sets

OK... back on the ranch... I sent this set of questions to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's reporter on transporation: He (Larry Sandler) replied with this: So, hopefully there'll be some more information in the newspaper soon. I do have a question about flipping the seats on the Horizons...

BREAKING NEWS: Wisconsin Purchises Two Talgo Sets

If you haven't noticed anything recently, then you haven't been paying attention to Governor Doyle. His whole administration is corrupt. Specific to this transaction, a red flag goes up because Doyle will not release the names of the people who went with him on his Talgo-paid-for trip to...

LaHood Announces Guidelines for High-Speed Rail Funding

YOU can stop reading about it if you are so concerned.

    Electrical outlets on superliner cars

When I rode the EB in June 2007, we had a SSL with the booths in one half. The regular lounge seating was difficult to get, but so were the booths. The train was full. I thought the booths were nice to have. My wife and I played some cards there during the day. (we were in coach) One...

LaHood Announces Guidelines for High-Speed Rail Funding

The original point that jis was trying to make was that our Interstate System would be ridiculous if it was just built over pre-existing ROWs. You tried to say that I-20 WAS built on pre-existing ROW. I'm saying that is not correct. The vast majority of I-20 in Alabama was built on new ROW in...

LaHood Announces Guidelines for High-Speed Rail Funding

You are wrong about I-20 in Alabama. It was built almost entirely on new right-of-way. East of Birmingham it parallels US 78, which has its own ROW except for just west of Pell City where I-20 must have needed to us US 78's ROW for 3 miles. West of Birmingham, I-20/59 parallels US 11. They...

    Trouble near Chicago

You're right. My children are going to be paying for this whole fiasco. And I think a better intercity train network would be of more use to them than most of the other stuff. Also, if you think I don't contact my government representatives at all levels about this and other issues, you are...

    Trouble near Chicago

I'm paying for the trillion-dollar bailouts and stimulus, so I don't see how I don't have enough money to give a few more billion to Amtrak for equipment. (Long distance trains are pretty close to break-even, operationally) Well let's see here. Currently most of the western LD trains are close...

    Trouble near Chicago

If Amtrak had four frequencies a day like they should, none of the trains would have needed to be held. The connecting passengers could have just taken the departing train six hours later. No more inconveniencing hundreds of passengers for the connection of dozens of passengers.

    Empire Builder Stop May Move

I think the entire long-distance network needs to quadruple in frequency. Each route should have four trains spaced six hours apart. The advantages are numerous: - Every station would now have a morning, afternoon, evening, and middle-of-the-night train stop. This will greatly increase the...

    CCC on the Empire Builder

So what would the new consist order be for an EB with a diner, SSL, and CCC? I presume that the CCC would go to Portland and the SSL and diner to Seattle? P42, P42, P42, baggage, trans-dorm, sleeper, sleeper, diner, lounge, coaches, [split], coaches, CCC, and Portland sleeper Would the...

Obama to unveil HSR plan Thursday

What's wrong with a lot of stations? If all trains stop at all stations, then yes it would be bad. But if there's a proliferation of stations because of demand, we'll safely assume there'll be a proliferation of train runs. And some will be express and some will have stop at most of the...

Milwaukee to Madison 110 mph stimulus money

It appears as though a branch to the airport is planned for future expansion. But the starter system will only have one line. While compared to other commuter rail systems that's not much, it sure is a lot compared to zero commuter rail lines in Madison currently. (Heck, there are zero in the...

Milwaukee to Madison 110 mph stimulus money

Do you have a link to support this claim? I haven't read anything about what affect this would have on the Empire Builder. I do think it would make a lot of sense to have all trains go to Madison though. Then Columbus can be the one getting bus thruway service instead of Madison.

Milwaukee to Madison 110 mph stimulus money

I had thought the commuter rail was going to the airport too, but apparently the New Starts Application specifies the route that goes to Sun Prairie instead. So unfortunately, there won't be rail access from Amtrak to downtown. Which to me is a real problem, since downtown Madison is...
