    Heartland Flyer discussion

Was back out in OKC a few days ago, and decided to have another go at it. This time I stayed at the Wyndham Grand (formerly the Renaissance), just adjacent to the the train station. I can recommend that hotel if you're looking for somwhere to stay nearby. Good service, clean room and common...

    Heartland Flyer discussion

True. I finished teaching a class as part of my trip to OKC, to a night shift. My plan had been to head to hotel, nap a couple hours, then relax on the train til Dallas, and catch a flight home. Ended up snagging an early flight from OKC instead, and on a layover as I type this. Missed trying...

Nevermind.. moments after I made that comment, it changed to cancelled on the Amtrak app.

Sigh.. so much for my interesting side trip. Is the Amtrak site the best place to watch for updates, do you think? And if it does cancel, which seems likely, when do you think they'll announce that?

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train (Guadalajara/Jalisco, Mexico)

A few places in the Spanish speaking world call train cars "vagón (de tren)", so I suspect it's a artefact of that.

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train (Guadalajara/Jalisco, Mexico)

Aside from some passing mentions, I haven't seen any discussion of this tourist line come up here. Has anyone tried out the "Tequila Train" between Guadalajara and Jalisco? It's a short trip - you can do either train out and bus return, or bus out and train return, with the day focused on...

That's a good point, but if it does, it does, I suppose. I'll be in OKC anyway and there are flight options home from there as well (that's actually what I originally had booked). Especially if it did cancel, I'd know pretty early in the day and could work around that.

Thanks for the info on seating - that seems just fine with me. Was just hoping to get a window seat, and I'll keep in mind to try for a right hand seat. I'm not super worried about getting the 3pm flight. I'm travelling carry on only, have Clear and PreCheck, and am generally pretty adept at...

That seems like it could potentially work really well. There's a TRE departure from FTW Central at 12:52 PM, which seems like I'd have excellent chances of making from the Heartland Flyer. And the Medical/Market Center station is only about 4 miles from DAL. Not only that, at least the one...

Thanks, yeah.. that's how it looked on Maps / Transit. I think I agree with you, that an Uber is the way to go. I could take a later flight, and deal with transit, but it's a lot of extraneous "stuff", which will end up taking twice the time, to save maybe $30. Plus, if I take the Uber, I...

Ah, thanks *very* much. Looks like with the exception of some rare outliers, it's pretty much always within 20 minutes of on time, either way.

    Heartland Flyer discussion

I'm sure this ground has already been covered, but I'm not having much luck with search. In a few days, I've got a work trip to OKC, followed by an extra day where I don't need to get home urgently. Rather than flying home from OKC, I'm taking the Heartland Flyer down to FTW, and flying home...

Surfliner - Swapping upper and lower level seats

Excellent to know, especially the first part. Many thanks.

Surfliner - Swapping upper and lower level seats

Right, but I frequently hear announcements reminding pax that downstairs seating is for disabled people only. As my mom isn't disabled "on paper", I suppose it would be better to phrase my question: "Would it cause an issue to take lower level seats without documentation or prior...

Surfliner - Swapping upper and lower level seats

First, apologies if there's been a thread on this before - seems like I've seen one, but searching came up dry. Once in a while, when I ride the Surfliner, I'll take my mom along. The times she's been, she's had a great time. But, she's also on the older side, and has knee issues which are...

    Bring your own food options?

I took a trip on the City of New Orleans a few months back, and posted on here a bit about some of the food we brought along. Most of those recommendations were specific to leaving from New Orleans, though, and not the most useful for you. That said, I brought these...

Amtrak, do you know where your diner is?

Having left a used cooler out in the sun a few times in my life, I wonder what that will smell like when it's brought back to service..

Passenger/Freight Rail Collision in Greece, 2/28

It would be tempered glass - which breaks into crumbles, as compared to laminated/safety glass, which also breaks into crumbles, but generally stays in place due to a sandwiched plastic sheet bonded to the glass. A window punch (or the breaker devices @Just-Thinking-51 mentioned) will work fine...

Passenger/Freight Rail Collision in Greece, 2/28

It seems like a number of news reports, as well as statements from passengers, remarked that at least a few of the passenger cars "burst into flame" nearly immediately. I know early info isn't always accurate, but that's being reported enough I'd think there's truth to it. As I'm totally...

Passenger/Freight Rail Collision in Greece, 2/28

https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/28/europe/greece-train-crash-larissa-intl-hnk/index.html Story was thin on details at the time of this post, but stated it was a head on collision between a freight train and a Hellenic Railways passenger train heading from Athens to Thessaloniki, with a number of...
