    Group travel?

The prep school I attended in Concord, NH, would reserve a coach from Boston to New York for school vacations. In more opulent times, there was be a special train from Concord to New York. From August Hecksher, St. Paul's: The Life of a New England School, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

Bellingham, Washington, is a good base for touring Northwest Washington. The stretch of Amtrak running between Mount Vernon and Bellingham along the shore at the base of Mount Chuckanut is one of the most scenic coastal stretches in the Amtrak system. Just a few blocks from the Amtrak station...

There's also the Grand Canyon Railway in this area: https://www.thetrain.com/ I suggest several days to explore the Four Corners area--I spent two weeks on my first visit, and later returned to visit a few more highlights.

Here's a few other places we stayed. Pagosa Springs has been extensively built-up since we were there around 1987--it was dilapidated and scary then; now it looks downright upscale. https://www.pagosahotsprings.com/ https://www.visitmesaverde.com/ https://strater.com/...

The Four Corners area (four states meet here) is a fantastic place to visit! There's Monument Valley, Mesa Verde National Park, the Durango and Silverton Railroad, Sedona--a huge diversity of landscapes in a small area. You'll have a great time!

    Amtrak Coach discussion

The new seats on the Superliners are very comfortable. I think they have new cushions as well as a new impermeable plastic covering compared to the old cloth. I had thought the seats might get sweaty, but I had no problem of that nor did I feel as if I were sliding around. The seat pitch is...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

Oh, there certainly are reasonable hotels in Seattle. Just a couple weeks ago, we stayed at a Silver Cloud Inn (a local independent chain of ten hotels) for $143 for an upper-floor, lake-view room. But even then, we chose the hotel for its proximity to what we were doing--it was actually...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

The closest hotel to the Amtrak station in Tacoma is the Comfort Inn and Suites, and it is also adjacent to Tacoma Dome. Rates there can be $100-$150, but I paid $449 for one night for an Elton John concert at the dome. I called the hotel a few days in advance for some driving instructions...

An interesting diversion I would not mind (United to Pago Pago)

Jis, it was a 787. The replacement plane was flown from Sidney, with another flight canceled. I was in the transit lounge in Pago Pago for a stopover on a South Pacific Island Airways 707 flight from Honolulu to Papeete. On the return flight, which was direct PPT-HNL, there was some kind of...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

My wife and I are pretty picky regarding hotels. For a few years, we were spending most of our vacation dollars at Turtle Bay on the North Shore of Oahu. I grew up in Hawaii, and my wife lived there for many years; this is really the only place in Hawaii we would want to stay. In 2017, we...

Quick trip on Coast Starlight from LAX to SEA

I understand your dedication to train travel, and have made some pretty expensive trips myself. But $860 for a Roomette? That's about what I like to pay for a Bedroom!

Possible revival of the Boston North-South Rail Link Project

When I want to go through Boston, I travel between Back Bay and North Station on the Orange line. Most people want to go to Boston, not through it, so I don't think this costly project is necessary.

Been a while, planning another trip

The Lake Shore Limited tends to run very expensive, and the Texas Eagle has a dearth of amenities as well as mediocre scenery. With air fares as low as they are (I think you are based in the DFW area), you could fly to an origin and from a destination for a small amount compared to the cost of...

    California Zephyr discussion

I would suggest calling Amtrak Guest Rewards (if you're not a member they'll sign you up) at 1(800)307-5000 and trying to switch to an even-numbered room in car 0540 for the best views. But any room in 0540 or 0531 is safer than a room in 0532.

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Those new trains are pretty short--only two coaches and a cafe/business class. Amtrak doesn't have a lot of seats to sell.

Advice for planning an Empire Builder trip

    1) Eastbound is generally regarded as having better scenery in the Rocky Mountains (Glacier National Park) as well as along the Mississippi River. 2) I've ridden in the middle of January both with and without snow. I think in February and March, there is always a chance of a storm which...

    Greetings from Seattle

Welcome, Skylar! I'm up here on Orcas Island, and like to ride the Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, and Cascades. I've learned lots about booking and riding Amtrak here. There's also a thread in the non-rail section about ferries. I hope you read around and post often!

Advice on a mammoth train trip with our ten-year-old granddaughter next summer

From what happened this year, I would only accept reservations in the first sleeper line. The second sleeper was canceled on many trains, leaving room reservation holders with coach seats.
