Newbie with a couple of questions

Passengers traveling on rail passes are treated the same as all other coach passengers. Regarding sitting together, crews usually try to seat couples together, but this is not guaranteed. Since ATL and SYR are intermediate stops on the trains, passengers boarding there do not get first choice...

YOUTH RIDE FREE IN WASHINGTON STATE Passengers aged 18 and under now ride free on Amtrak Cascades trains in Washington. We’re hoping to inspire an entire generation to consider trains as a great choice when traveling along the I-5 corridor. Learn more at...

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I see from a video on Facebook that there is a second coach on the Seattle section of trains that departed Chicago on May 23 and earlier. Hopefully, this will remain until at least fall.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

I had pre-cooked food in an Amfleet Dinette when I rode the Broadway Limited in May, 1994. From the May 1, 1994 National Timetable Services listing for that train: "Dining Car--Tray meal table service. (Full dining car service has been temporarily replaced with tray meal service. We hope to...

    Planes overhead

There was another different US-Asia flight I noticed over San Juan County the other day--the first Cathay Pacific flight and the first Boston-bound flight I have observed.

    Window clarity for photos

Here are a couple pictures I took out dirty windows. One the first, there is a noticeable spot on the window, which was actually mostly fairly clean. The second is through a very dirty window at the end of the train, and not much dirt is visible.

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

The withdrawn Talgo Series VI had very comfortable seats, and most of the seats faced forwards (they could be rotated at endpoints). I've never been a fan of the surviving Talgo Series VIII trainsets.

    Revival of Night Owl/Twilight Shoreliner

One of Amtrak's goals should be to maximize equipment utilization. It is not efficient to have a whole train or even just a few cars (sleepers) sit idle all day and only be used for an overnight run. To this end, when 65 / 66 / 67 last ran, the southern endpoint and start point of the...

Move coach to roomette during trip

I would assume that the room is occupied until Chico, and that there will be a delay while the room is cleaned if the previous occupant used the bed. I would not ask about getting into the room early, but would certainly explain to the conductor what was going on. I have seen Roomettes...

    Seattle area to Vancouver, BC

Whether or not you can board in Tukwila depends on which train you are taking. If you are on the morning train, it originates in Seattle so there is no Tukwila stop. The evening train originates in Portland, with a stop at Tukwila. Seats are not assigned, and many passengers will alight at...

Car Wreck and a Few Railroads

Well, I have now had the 2021 Tacoma for almost three years, and still have fewer than 10,000 miles on it. For half the year, I drive it less than a mile to work (I don't walk because I like to come home for lunch, and have only a half-hour break). So far, the Mexico-made truck has no rattles...

    Planes overhead

I am still trying to see if any of the apps identify the low-altitude fighter-jet training flights. I would not be at all surprised if none show them--I have heard that one of the things they try to do is be hard to track, and even heard rumors that there is a vehicle on the ground involved...

    Planes overhead

I have been looking at FlightRadar24 to see if they show low-altitude military training flights. I haven't heard any recently, but did see a military helicopter identified. I'm sorry to not know what kind of plane they are that I hear low overhead--I just call them "fighter jets;" I think...

    Planes overhead

I heard some military jets flying low nearby, and rushed to see if "adsbexchange" would identify them. They were not shown. Also, I am no longer sure that FlightAware identifies Canadian military flights. I did note some differences between adsbexchange and Flightaware. Adsbexchange is a...

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Responding to @ET2020 's question, "Did you also find that it was hard to have 2 people seated in the chairs at the same time ??" As I mentioned, the second chair in a Family Bedroom is too close to the other chair for a person to occupy each chair. That second chair has a vertical back that...

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Here are two pictures I have of the Family Bedroom. The first shows the size of the windows, and the second shows the vertical back on the second chair. Note that in the depiction posted above, the room is reversed: facing the couch, the kids' bunks are actually on the right.

    Auto Train discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

This depiction is not accurate. There is not enough space between the two chairs for a person to sit on each chair. The berth shown above the chairs is not that long; it fits a child under 4' 7" only. There is barely enough space to sit under the upper berth if it is folded down. There is no...
