    Videos/Pictures of Combined Zephyr/Pioneer/Desert Wind?

The day in May, 1994, I rode the eastbound California Zephyr, the Pioneer was not operating, but we added cars and locomotives from the Desert Wind in Salt Lake City. The combination of these photos shows the whole train:

    Riding Amtrak for fun?

Many of my Amtrak trips had some purpose other than just riding trains. But I'm going to comment on three trips that were for pleasure only. In January 2019, I rode the full routes of the Coast Starlight, Texas Eagle, and Empire Builder. My wife likes train travel, but really wasn't...

    Tipping on Amtrak

Custodians deserve a tip when they do a good job. I'll give a $10 tip if I see them and the restrooms are clean in a station or airport. I like to smell bleach. Bleach kills norovirus.

    Hello

We all love Amtrak here, but can be as critical as anyone out there. I hope you share some photos!

    Electric and Hybrid road vehicles

During the recent cold spells, electric vehicles are being hit with the triple-whammy of reduced battery performance, slower charging rates, and increased demand for cabin heat...

    NH Native

I think it was called the Wolfeboro Railroad. It hauled freight--we picked up a boxcar of excelsia, as they call it in New Hampshire.

    Proposed Boston-Concord NH Route

It costs $800 for my wife and me to fly round trip to Seattle from here, about the same distance as Concord to Boston (there does happen to be an intervening ocean here...). And we are sometimes willing to pay that. I wonder how much people plunk down to fly from Boston or New York to their...

    NH Native

Welcome! I grew up on Maui, but my parents decided us kids needed some "mainland" experience before we went off to college, so in 1973 the whole family packed up and moved to Concord, NH, for two years. We rode a steam train in Wolfeboro while we were there. I hope you read around and post...

    Hello from the west coast

Welcome! The Auto Train is also one of two long-distance trains I have not traveled on, and I just yesterday listed for a friend all the reasons I'll probably never take it... We love trip reports with photos, whether on Amtrak or foreign trains! I hope you read around and post often.

Looking for website with condensed list of Amtrak fares

What's really amazing is the extent to which Amtrak actually works to prevent any sort of bargain searches. Does the Freedom of Information Act apply here?

    "Call Attendant" button

I have pressed the call button and left the room to go to breakfast, hoping the attendant would make up my bed while I was gone. I usually make my own bed, but did this on the last morning of the trip when the attendant needed to change the sheets. I think this worked, but have some memory of...

    "Call Attendant" button

I recall varying degrees of success with the "Call Attendant" button. I remember seeing a panel in a Superliner (not sure if I or II) Rm 1 with numbers for each room that lit up when the call button was pressed. Also, the light outside your room that illuminates is also the location of the...

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

My wife and I could not sleep together in the lower berth in a Bedroom. She has had a lot of injuries--thrown from a horse and hit her head, jumped from a helicopter and twisted her knee... She uses a lot of pillows, for one thing. We sleep in a king bed at home, and in our twenty years...

There is no good way to travel in America

I think one potentially "good way to travel" would be buses with 2-1 seating. Currently, the seats on buses are the narrowest of any long-distance transportation mode. I have heard they have deluxe buses in Mexico (with less legroom for the single seats than the doubles). But I don't know how...

There is no good way to travel in America

I was going to make this same comment, and add that lounges at airports are a great amenity, although one must be a frequent flyer to avail oneself of the privilege for domestic travel.

    Baggage Storage at Emeryville, CA?

In my experience, agents are pretty lenient on how to count pieces, as long as it is fairly well consolidated. I checked in my rollaboard with a duffle bag on the handle, and it was counted as one piece.
