    Power strips in Roomettes

I posted on Facebook about my wonderful power-strip-surge-protector, and received a reply that surge suppressors can overload the type of circuit breaker used on Amtrak. As a warning, I have heard that on-board staff will reset a circuit breaker once, but if it trips a second time they'll...

Westbound CZ Transdorm: Room H or Roomette 17 for a newbie?

I like Room H, and as @Amtrak709 mentioned, think it is an upgrade over a Roomette. It's certainly spacious, as there's plenty of floor area to pile all one's luggage. One tip I'd offer is to jam a plastic Amtrak coat hanger between the door and the wall at the pocket side when you leave the...

    Amtrak features and comfort updates

I have found that the thermostat in Superliners sometimes controls the heat. For AC air flow control, if necessary, I use a piece of cardboard and gaffer's tape to cover the vent. But I have largely been comfortable on Amtrak--with outside temperatures ranging from below 0˚ F on the Empire...

First time Amtrak rider traveling from Tampa to Norfolk

Welcome to our forum! I hope you enjoy your trip. The train from Tampa to Virginia has single-level cars, so there is no lower or upper level.

What have you forgotten to bring with you on an Amtrak trip?

My last trip was overnight in coach on the way out, and then in a room on the way back. For the coach portion, I forgot to bring my ski cap in case the coach was cold. Fortunately, it was a comfortable temperature (I had to take off my jacket in order to not be too warm under a blanket).

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

That is a Superliner Accessible Bedroom. It has the same bed arrangement as a Roomette, but the steps are narrower due to the extra width of the hallway. In a Roomette with an accessible hallway, the whole room would only be this wide.

No Business Class on the Coast Starlight

The seats were upholstered in faux leather, but were otherwise identical to Superliner coach seats. There was never a guarantee of having two seats for one person.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I just wanted to put this picture here of what a Roomette would look like with an accessible hallway. There would not be enough room to stand between the hallway wall and the bed. Here are the "steps" in an Accessible Bedroom:

How often do cars smell like sewer gas?

An adjacent sleeper once on the Coast Starlight had this affliction, and I have caught whiffs of that smell in my own car. On another Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles, the toilets in our sleeper were inoperable for a few hours, but were fixed in either Emeryville or Oakland. I think...

Thank you for the detailed trip report! I admire your dedication for going up to the station and having a beer in Albany.

I don't think I ever saw a "live" Connie. But this is in front of Seattle's Museum of Flight:

Welcome to the forum! I hope you let us know how your trip goes. Lunch is not served, and breakfast usually starts and ends early.

Empire Builder with no Sightseer Lounge

When I was in this situation, I did not request compensation. I bought a Roomette ticket from Eugene to Seattle on the Coast Starlight mainly to ride in the "Pacific Parlour Car" during its final days of operation. But due to floods in southern California, my train was turned in Sacramento and...

Auto Train Questions (car alarms and other vehicle issues)

You don't need to worry--as long as you car is not locked (and Amtrak will not lock it), your car alarm is not activated.

Purchasing 2 adjoining bedrooms for themselves?

For example, from Chicago to New Orleans and back, $5,000. https://www.aaprco.com/travel-opportunities/ride-the-royal-street-to-mardi-gras/

Purchasing 2 adjoining bedrooms for themselves?

For what Amtrak charges for two Bedrooms, one could probably get an accommodation in a Private car, although with many restrictions on routing and schedule. But I would look into that before gambling $5,000 on a suite for one person where they might not be able to open the adjoining door.

    Children's model trains

I had a 4' x 8' HO-scale layout on pulleys so the whole thing could be raised out of the way in our enclosed, high-ceilinged garage. It was great, until I decided I needed ballast under the tracks and after that it never stayed on the rails. Also, one time I was lowering it to show friends...

    "late arrival of inbound equipment"?

That means the inbound train was late. For example, in Seattle, the Empire Builder inbound train 7 is serviced and turned around to become that day's outbound train 8. If train 7 is late, there is no spare equipment to make up that day's train 8, and train 8 will be delayed due to late arrival...

Persistent toilet odor in Superliner roomette #4

I have smelled this odor in another car (not my own), and have caught whiffs of it in Bedrooms. But I was recently in Room H, and did not notice this odor at all. The odor is the result of a malfunction, and I feel sorry for those in a car with this affliction.
