Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

I know every single individual has a different take and different feelings about all these recent train annulments due to COVID staffing. Mine is this: for the first time in my 74 years of life: there is no SILVER METEOR for two and a half months. Yes, I know that Silver Meteor has not run...

Two ‘Cardinal’ veterans look back at rewarding careers

I would simply like to add my congratulations to these two Amtrak staff who seem to exemplify my concept of what a railroad (Amtrak) employee should be. I don't believe I ever rode with either, but I wish I had. Ms. Adams mentioned W. Graham Claytor Jr. Anytime Mr. Claytor's name is mentioned...

How Often Does This Happen: trains over 24 hours late?

Just for the record, Silver Star 92-02 arrived NYP 31 hours 50 minutes late. I am told that is was a grade crossing accident near DeLand FL that initially delayed the train for about 6 hours, then the Virginia snow did the rest.

How Often Does This Happen: trains over 24 hours late?

Thanks for the post west point. I was not aware of this. I think I might like to have been a passenger???? I guess????

    The big map

I have been telling this story for nearly 30 years now: when asked by my coworkers what is the COLDEST place you have ever been; one February morning in 1997 on Empire Builder CHI-PDX stepped off the train to stretch in Minot ND = gorgeous clear morning, snow stacked to the sky, temp minus 19...

Reserving a Silver Meteor Viewliner II Sleeper

I have mixed emotions and reactions to the Viewliner II sleepers. I am the guy (non ADA passenger) who likes the H bedroom. I frequently book a roomette but at the last minute if available upgrade to H bedroom (due to the ridiculous price of bedrooms, perhaps not so much lately). I simply...

How Often Does This Happen: trains over 24 hours late?

I may have misread the tracker, but seems like last week on the days of that heavy snow storm in the northeast and Virginia, seems 92 Silver Star came somewhat close to catching up to previous day 92 in Virginia. Maybe someone on the forum knows the facts.

    Amtrak long distance fares 2021-2023

I know we have "beat this dead horse" for months. I know COVID has affected forever how we do things. I know there has been recently a significant snow storm in the Virginia and the northeast. I think I understand the economic principles of supply and demand. Having said that, who would pay...

Crescent ATL-NOL: Is Roomette worth it?

My own last post made be curious about bedroom fare over labor day 2022 ATN-NOL-ATN = $648.00 each way ($1296 round trip) if booked and paid now. Answer: NO

Crescent ATL-NOL: Is Roomette worth it?

Yes, those were the days. My wife and I travelled ATN-NOL-ATN several years each labor day in a bedroom over the last 22 years. Not recently and, based on current very high ridiculous bedroom prices, maybe not again in the near future.

    Family Car vs. Roomette Car

Just to add my opinion, having a window on both sides of the Family Bedroom accommodation and the train is a very positive feature--not available on most Amtrak sleeping car spaces. Even through it is on the Superliner lower level, the two windows are a plus. My memory has failed me since I...

    Mask requirements on Amtrak

Lonnie: I read your post and am a little curious about the "tone" of the announcement. In my days of working the extra board flag on the Auto Train, staff and crew sometimes got on the PA and made announcements that were "witty" or "comical" or "frivolous"--more entertainment valve than...

    Mask requirements on Amtrak

This comment, although perhaps somewhat frivolous, about the wearing of masks perhaps permanently on airplanes and perhaps Amtrak: Does anyone recall the Charleton Heston movie "Soylent Green" from back in the 60's or 70's? Lots of citizens in masks in public places. It was New York City and...

Why is Amtrak discounting Auto Train fares?

Qupla you got me thinking. In my 50+ years and 1/4 million miles on Amtrak, I have been point to point on every one of the LD trains, every one of the medium and short distance trains with the exception of BOS to Maine; the exception to long distance is AUTO TRAIN. In the 34 years I lived in...

Why is Amtrak discounting Auto Train fares?

With all due respect, you missed my point! I am not advocating not paying for the cost of the vehicle. Simply put, the room + vehicle on the Auto Train was considerably less that the room alone on the Silvers. The fact that no vehicle would be transported has NO being on revenue! In fact, they...

Why is Amtrak discounting Auto Train fares?

Thanks, Qapla. The thought of letting the car "just ride" never quite occurred to me. As a railfan for my 74 years of life, I am "the one who" just wants to get on the trains and ride. I lived in Daytona Beach for 34 years in the 1970's, 80's, and 90's. The overriding factor now is the...

Why is Amtrak discounting Auto Train fares?

I am just curious about this. Over the days when Amtrak offered $129 roomette on Auto Train, if you lived near an auto train point (Sanford or Deland or Winter Park or Orlando or Washington DC area) it was--because of high sleeping care fares on the Silvers--considerably cheaper to buy the...

    West Coast Routes

jis: Your recent post caught my attention ref track maintenance "the short segment between Deland and Palatka which is Amtrak's bailiwick now". A railfan all of my 74-year life, I lived in Daytona Beach for most of my life but moved to Georgia in 1998. Spent a good part of 20 years of my life...

    Favorite Sleeper car room?

My thanks to the knowledgeable member who pointed out and alerted me to the difference in the configuration of the "H" bedroom in Viewliner 1 and the new Viewliner II sleepers. I travel about every month on The Crescent and upgrade frequently when available to the "H" bedroom (still operating...

H Rooms available to passengers with no disability?

Thanks for that post--cocojacoby--I did not know that about the Viewliner II. Although I rode the silvers when I lived in Florida, riding the Crescent for the last twenty years or so. Sometime depart from Savannah--so I will remember this about Viewliner II H room. You are right. That seems...
