    Rude Amtrak employees

jis. Thanks for the reply and I guess I agree. Heading off soon on another "just to ride" trip ATN-WAS-ATN. Hoping for "lack of rudeness". I had really wanted to ride he Silvers from SAV or JSP or JAX, but the drive from my home in Columbus GA is so much closer to ATN and I like the non-ADA...

    Rude Amtrak employees

Just surfing here and this thread today and can't help musing about this fact: From this thread's "RUDE AMTRAK EMPLOYEES" inception 02/15/2010 to it's resurrection on 05/15/2022 there were about 30 total posts. From May of this year to present there are about 160 and still very much active...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

Prompts me to recall and retell my favorite "low fare back then" story. November 18-20,1966 to visit my girlfriend (now wife) Williamsburg-Richmond-Athens, GA and return. $48.61 round trip unrestricted fare + $19.10 Bedroom Pullman ticket southbound and $8.90 Roomette Pullman ticket...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

jis or all: To the best of your knowledge, is the Crescent running stlll with just Viewliner 1 sleepers? Trip soon ATN-WAS-ATN and I frequently upgrade as a non-ADA passenger to the H bedroom if available--a space I have always loved in the Viewliner 1 but NOT SO MUCH in the Viewliner 2 because...

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

jis: Thanks for you prompt response yesterday. Since moving to Georgia in late 1998, my interest in this issue is not nearly as great as it was back when I lived in Daytona Beach--but it is still there. As I may have reported previously, my office in Daytona Beach was on the site of the old...

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

jis: I'm the guy who lived in Daytona Beach for the 1970's 80's and 90's and passionately awaited the Sunset panhandle return in 1993 (I rode the first trip of the return NOL-DLD in April 1993). Of course, Katrina ended all that + I moved to Georgia in 1998--so I, perhaps, do not care as much as...

    Amtrak features and comfort updates

I was just surfing this thread and reading mikewrite detailed commentary and my first thought was: has anyone ever been in sleeper where the temperature dial or thermostat worked? I go back as far as the year 1966 and 375,000 miles and I cannot remember a single one. My comment is more of a...

Westbound CZ Transdorm: Room H or Roomette 17 for a newbie?

Chellerz: My two cents worth. I am a non-ADA passenger who has always loved the H space--but only on the Viewliner 1 equipment. I have frequently upgraded when available. H room there is large and the toilet, sink and shower are fully enclosed in a separate room behind a door. This, however...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Even though W. Graham Claytor Jr. has been gone nearly 30 years, there are times I wish I could conjure up his ghost and spirit to deal with these employees on the Crescent. If Mr. Claytor were alive today and still riding "his train", he would too! I have been on the Crescent nearly 100 times...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

Another topic from this thread has been the issue of Viewliner Bedrooms. Since their introduction in the late 1990's, the Viewliners most always ride with the vestibule entrance in the forward of the car as well a Rooms H, A and B at the head end (H rides forward, A rides backward, B rides...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

jis: I like your post. Can you envision or imagine a train with sleepers and a diner departing BOS on a schedule like the old Twilight Shoreliner--continuing on south to SAV and JAX. Maybe even MIA like the Silver Palm of the late 1990's and early 2000's (but I guess that would require two...

    Rude Amtrak employees

With respect, with the prices that are being charged for sleeping car accommodations these days, I think the "scale needs to be tipped" in favor of the passenger (the consumer). As a 375,000 miles rail passenger traveler since 1966 I find instances like the one described above disgraceful!

    Issues with an SCA

I recall the days of the Chief of Onboard Services. Always very formally dressed in an attractive uniform (at least on the Florida trains). My buddies who worked or still work as agents (not onboard) in JAX, DLD, and SFD were of the opinion that the person who held the job of Chief was...

    Issues with an SCA

jis: Thanks for the reply. Great advice. Even though I have expressed cynicism about Amtrak on this forum lately, nothing is going to keep me away from the passenger trains. I really want to go visit my daughter in Seattle. In the sleepers and in a bedroom. When I hit the lottery, I'll...

    Issues with an SCA

zephyr17: I am so much in agreement with your post and I especially like the "It's our train, we can do what we want" phrasing of the culture. I would bet that if you could transport yourself this minute today right now in history on board any random Amtrak train currently operating in the...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Even though I missed the glory days of the plush dining cars of the 1930's-40's-50's (I didn't starting riding until the mid 1960's), it was still a great experience--it was a railroad dining car!!! And all was still good until recently. I still blame John Mica. I know he was defeated from...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

JWM. Sounds as if we may have similar memories. I am 75 and 375,000 rail miles--and would love to be in the Florida Special (or even the Silver Comet) dining car right now. Remember writing your own dining car order on the dining car check???

Purchasing 2 adjoining bedrooms for themselves?

My wife and I (just the two of us) had Bedroom Suite D-E on The Empire Builder departing CHI for SEA on 24 December 2015. Just wanted to be on the train Christmas Day for no good reason other than being a railfan and we arrived in Seattle on 26 December. It was, indeed, a great trip with all...

    Moynihan Train Hall

I fully agree with the assessment of Moynihan--it is truly magnificent with amenities. I made a special trip ATN-NYP-ATN just to see it in June 2021 just after it opened. I must say that I am still very partial to Washington Union Station Metropolitan Lounge--seems it has a quiet closed...

    Capitol Limited discussion

Sidney: I suspect I would also be one of those passengers disappointed. Haven't been on the Cap Limited since COVID. My favorite recollections are from the early 1990's; departing Washington DC on a cold winter day, snow gently falling, from the diner, or Heritage sleeper, or the dome lounge...
