Viewliner II Sleeper on the Cardinal

jis: Explain to me what makes the Cardinal OK to run at the 125mph. Is it axle count, equipment, consist? Thanks!

    Amtrak long distance fares 2021-2023

I know that there are many patrons of this forum that are always very knowledgeable ref sleeping car "buckets". My travels are very frequently ATN-WAS-ATN on the Crescent, but I am almost clueless these days about what is a good low bucket fare or a ridiculous high bucket fare. I realize ATN...

Sunset Limited - any interesting scenery, specific side to look out?

While it has been some time since I have travelled on the SL, I am always reminded on one of the best continuous rail trips I have had in my life. Back in the mid 1970's, there was a through sleeper from LAX to NYP via NOL--no change of trains or cars necessary. Handled by Amtrak SL; overnight...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Thanks very much, mediaman, for your post. I am glad to see a positive comment about the Crescent. As a frequent traveler on the Crescent for the past 22 years and as one (me) who has been very critical of its operations since COVID, your comments are encouraging. As a railfan for my entire...

    Rude Amtrak employees

Thanks for the comments, jis. Still trying to make the decision on boarding station, then maybe same day turnaround to RVR. Considering riding south into FL from SAV to maybe TPA--but the departure and arrivals times in SAV are not real good. By the way, I noticed your location as Space...

    Rude Amtrak employees

JoefromPA: Thanks for that. Your response does NOT surprise me. As a railfan, and as one who is still sad ref the Silver Meteor suspension, there is this natural desire to want to ride a train with the large consist like 91/92 has now: 2-3 locos, 5 sleepers, diner, lounge car, 5-6 coaches...

    Rude Amtrak employees

joelkfla: I believe this is pretty much the case as has been my recent experiences on the Crescent. As a matter of curiosity, you, I believe, have travelled recently on 91/92 with the five-car sleeper consist. Any comments on the service level there?

    Rude Amtrak employees

I think I just remembered the answer to my own inquiry about the Chief of Onboard Services from the 1980-90's. They were sort stuck in between the T&E crew and the OBS crew; had little or no authority; and were universally disliked by all crew.

    Rude Amtrak employees

Do you remember the short-lived days of the Chief of Onboard Services?--at least they were on the Silver Service trains when I lived in Florida in the 1980's and 1990's. Do you think this concept is appropriate for onboard supervision and management of staff? There is certainly a cost...

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

May drive to SAV or JSP or JAX. I know SAV and lived in JAX at one time. I do NOT know JSP at all. Miles from my house is about 220 - 280 depending on the station I pick.

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

Thanks joelkfla. Could make the legal connection turnaround with about 1 hour in ALX (what a thrill!?). Or easy at RVR. Long for the days of Main Street Station and Broad Street Station in Richmond.

    Rude Amtrak employees

I have always tried to preference my remarks with "in my opinion" and that is just what this is. Although I have about 300,00 miles on the passenger trains, my significant travels did not start until my college days in Virginia in 1965--just a few years before Amtrak. For the last 51 years I...

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

I noticed that this forum thread has been relatively quiet for several days, so I thought I would "wake it up"! I am the railfan who gets the urge to ride every couple of months--in the sleepers usually overnight outbound and immediate turnaround overnight return. Usually ride ATN-WAS-ATN on...

    Traveling in Crescent (19) roomette

Assuming you are not ADA passengers and assuming you might be within 2 weeks of departure, try upgrading to the "H" bedroom if available. Generally, the "H" bedroom is only available to none ADA passengers two weeks prior to departure date. You will love it. The Crescent, at last check, is still...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

jis: One of these days I would love to recount to you and the rest of the forum the first and ONLY time I met John Mica. It was in 1988 long before he was elected from my district in Florida to Congress (I probably voted for him in 1992) and has to do with my inviting him to speak at an...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

    I. too, fantasize about the return of full service dining on the east coast trains. Having lived in Daytona Beach for 34 years before moving to Georgia in 1998, many, many great days and nights were spent on the Silver Service trains. Maybe the years since the ejection of Congressman Mica as...

    Issues with Amtrak reservation system

Railiner: I commend your resourcefulness and customer service. You sound just like two Amtrak agents I knew well in the 1980's and 1990's that were station agents in DLD and SFD (SFD not SFA). Thank you!

Atlanta temporarily lost checked baggage service - now restored

Looks like it has been nearly a year now since this issue occurred. Did it ever get resolved?? I still maintain that a vibrant city as ATL should have better station operations overall. I guess with only one SB and one NB departure daily, there is no real drive to improve or move as perhaps...

    National Train Day 2022

I believe that last time I celebrated National Train Day was way back in 2009. I rode from ATN-WAS on the Crescent to the festivities at Union Station Washington; then later that day on to Philadelphia. I remember riding to WAS with famous railroad artist Robert West. Have not really kept up...

Reminiscing about SFZ/CZ, Pioneer and Desert Wind

I was on the Desert Wind the last day it ran in 1997--sleeper LAX-CHI. While I have no real recollection of the consist that day, I DO remember what the sleeping car fare was: Deluxe Bedroom E = $525.00. I will stay off my soap-box about high sleeper bedroom prices these days. I remember the...
