    1993 Sunset Limited derailment

My best recollection from having been a passenger in the sleeper the week before the accident and being interested in the return of rail service NOL-MIA in general was there was initially (starting April, 1993) only ONE sleeper that made the entire cross country LAX-MIA trip. Although there...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

Thanks, jis, for the reply. Still fond memories of that day in April 1993 when service was restored NOL-JAX-MIA after years dormant. Also, the recent discussion of the Sunset Ltd accident in September 1993 in the AU forum has also prompted me to get better updated regarding this issue. Thanks...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

I have been a little out of the loop in staying current with the Gulf Coast issue. I assume the focus is NOL-MOB. Restoration on to JAX is still just a pipe dream??????right????

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

I agree. We could keep the P42, the P40, the F40, and the P30CH (and add the new Chargers) if it would represent a return to the administrative values that were prevalent in the period that those older locomotives represent, sic, W. Graham Claytor Jr. et al.

    1993 Sunset Limited derailment

My point was that there had been no "thru" service on the NOL-JAX line from the discontinuation of the Gulf Wind when Amtrak came into existence May 1971 until Amtrak extended the Sunset Ltd. in April 1993; AND there has been no "thru" service since Amtrak discontinued the NOL-ORL part of the...

    1993 Sunset Limited derailment

I was living in Daytona Beach FL at the time and was a passenger numerous times 1993-2005. I remember what a great day it was in April 1993 when the Sunset Ltd service was restored NOL-MIA (with a stop in DLD)--first passenger service back on that route for 20+ years (I was a sleeping car...

    1993 Sunset Limited derailment

CTANut: I have the data to answer your question, but it is in my office at home. I should know it, but I can not remember the exact consist. If no one has answered your question before the end of the afternoon, I will provide it. I have always (like many railfans) been extremely interested in...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

jphjaxfl I applaud your remarks. Although I have loved the passenger trains all my 74 years of life, that love was solidified during the 1960's when I started riding from Williamsburg VA and Richmond VA on the Silver Meteor and the Silver Star to Florida (lots to Jacksonville FL); and you will...

Crescent schedule change - first time in 50 years!

After my post on Monday, it has just occurred to me that I also about a dozen times in the three years before COVID travelled Anniston to Chicago on the Crescent connecting to the Cardinal based on the Cardinal's three times a week schedule. I always like to connect in MSS Manassas VA (pretty...

Do you have to request in advance that the wall be opened when getting the two-room combination?

I might also add this: With the extreme high cost of a bedroom these days and, especially a bedroom suite, you darn well better believe that pocket connecting door better work and be positioned as I, the passenger, want it.

Do you have to request in advance that the wall be opened when getting the two-room combination?

Thanks pennyk. If you have an opportunity read my post in "Craziest Drama on Amtrak you've seen" dated 04 August 2021 regarding the pocket door between Superliner sleeper E and D.

Crescent schedule change - first time in 50 years!

Thanks for your reply fdaley. Yes, I suspect that snow in Virginia would have frustrated the most avid railfan and traveler. I like to think my 74+ years of rail travel has given me "endless patience" but there IS a limit I guess. I think I read my favorite train--the Empire Builder--had a 2...

Crescent schedule change - first time in 50 years!

I apologize for my error in previous post. I know that # 20 is the Crescent Northbound and # 19 is the Crescent Southbound!

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

I suspect any SCA would be happy with a 20% fare tip. Can you imagine this CHI-LAX high bucket bedroom fares recently at in excess of $2000? Even I (stupid) paid $1100+ for a bedroom ATN-NYP.

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

I saw #91 on Virtual Rail cameras in Ashland VA one day this last weekend. Quite a consist!!! I can only wonder about the capacity and staff levels and service.!? As a 74 year railfan, I find myself having become a little more cynical about Amtrak and its inconsistencies. I will admit to...

Crescent schedule change - first time in 50 years!

I was intrigued to see this forum thread revisited after being dormant for several months. At the risk of sounding impertinent, W. Graham Claytor Jr. (admittedly my own idol when is comes to railroad men) is probably "rolling in his grave" when he perceives what has happened to his train--the...

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

Just for grins and old times sake, at lunch, I went home and checked a VHS video I made in 1986. The Silver Meteor's consist that day north of Auburndale was 18 units= 2 F40 locos, 2 baggage, 4 coaches, 1 lounge, 1 buffet, 1 diner, 3 sleepers, 1 lounge, 3 coaches. Quite a consist.

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

With 97/98 now annulled for about two and a half months, any clue as to what the normal consist of 91/92 may be. I realize "normal" is the key word here which--with COVID issues--certainly can be an unknown. I fantasize this 15+ car consist like the Silver Meteor used to be in the 1980's and...

    It’s a train family reunion…maybe?

To book the H rooms on both Superliners and Viewliners, must be an ADH passenger UNTIL a certain number of days before departure--then, if available, it is released to non ADA passengers. I do NOT know what that time constraint is. As I have mentioned in the forum in the past, I am a non ADA...

    It’s a train family reunion…maybe?

Can you envision reserving the 4 lower level Roomettes + the Family Bedroom + Accessible Bedroom on the same car. If available and not cost prohibitive, almost like having your own "private" car with all those bathrooms and showers thrown in. I know that this is a bit whimsical, but just a...
