Selecting seats in Business Class for Northeast Regional trains?

I like row 14 — it’s near the back, so you don’t get people going by you all the time. And it has extra room in back of the seats for some luggage. Row 1 is right in front of the bathrooms and I believe has no fold-down table. Probably the worst row, and Amtrak’s computer always tries to shove...

    Auto Train discussion

Thanks for posting this—I enjoyed the video presenter but did not catch his name — does he do train videos in general? After watching it, I don’t think I’m missing anything by not having a car. That line at Lorton would have driven me nuts, having the crew choose your dinner seating time would...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I was thinking of something like a Panera or Pret a Manger, assuming they might have ingredient lists — I know there is a Pret at PHL but don’t know about WAS. The CHOPT suggestion above sounds good.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Are you doing a one-night trip or long day trip and starting and ending in a city with lots of food choices? (Like Philly to Chicago, for example?) If so, do you already have some favorite allergy-free menu items from places there that list their ingredients and could you pick up something to...

    Amtrak vs spouse/partner

A few years ago, I was on a short trip to Fredericksburg, Virginia, with one of my cousins, who will take the train but is not a train person (“Patty, a train is just another type of transportation, like a bus or a car—there’s nothing special about it”😮) . She suggested a day trip to...

    Amtrak vs spouse/partner

I had lunch on one of the Silvers years ago with a man who told me he was taking the train to Florida to attend a wedding because he hated flying, and his wife was flying because she didn’t like the train. Then they would meet at their destination and attend the wedding together. Unless you...

    New Haven, CT station discussion

This month's Passenger Train Journal (2023-2, Issue 295) focuses on the New Haven Railroad. It has an interesting and informative article on New Haven Union Station, covering its history, what is there now (including which tracks are used primarily for which trains and which offices are still...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I notice the Acela First Class menu still says “fall/winter 2022.” Has Amtrak quietly gotten rid of whatever department developed new menu items for it? If so, the sensible thing to do would be to reprint the menu after removing the date and simply make it the official permanent menu.

Why don't more "High Profile" people ride the train?

I think a public figure could get away with not being recognized on the train and have a nice relaxing incognito journey. All they would have to do is dress casually and not draw attention to themselves. If we noticed them at all, it would probably be a reaction like “If that girl wore nice...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Yes, once or twice. I just slipped into the other sleeper and got their coffee. (This is not as selfish as it sounds, I hope—I need coffee immediately in the morning, before a lot of noise or light, or I get a terrible headache. I also bring some dark chocolate for the caffeine as a backup if...

Ferries, Ferries, and still more Ferries

I realize this is probably a very dumb question, but I thought electricity and water were a lethal combination—how do they keep the electric ferry from being a dangerous safety hazard?

    Suggestion sent to Amtrak

Not only does she not address your suggestion, she also incorrectly assumes that you’re trying to share each other’s points. She then puts in an unsolicited plug for the Amtrak credit card (I’m assuming the one with the fee), If robots are eventually going to replace a lot of workers, perhaps...

    Cardinal discussion

I just tried a random test booking — July 16 from Alexandria, Virginia to Chicago—and the same thing happened to me. Roomettes showed up but no bedrooms. Very odd. The Cardinal doesn’t have family bedrooms because it’s Viewliner equipment rather than Superliner equipment. But it certainly...

    Bring your own food options?

You stop at the convenience store in Sanford (the one popular in Pennsylvania but not named Sheetz😁) and get a prepared salad/sandwich to eat right away, plus snacks, donuts, and soda to take on the train. Unfortunately, that pesky Florida heat means you do need a cooler for the soda and...

    Hickory Creek excursion

Wonderful trip—lovely view along the river. Lunch looks delicious. I like that they show how the bedrooms were used.

Potentially dangerous collision on the NEC

I have never had anything but stellar Amtrak crews in New England — competent and professional. I’m sure whatever they did made the collision much less dangerous than it could have been. I also can’t see work crews just leaving panels lying around. Plus, since this stretch is all Amtrak owned...

First time rider - Norfolk to Boston

Views to look for in Connecticut on the right side (going up) and left side (coming back). You will probably see some ferries at Bridgeport and definitely at New London. Also, between Old Saybrook and New London, look for a stretch of beach running right alongside the train tracks. After New...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Wow! Thank you! I heard it had gone downhill under the new owners but didn’t realize how far downhill! Someone suggested going there recently and I suggested one of my favorite diners instead, which (thank goodness) my friend agreed to. In comparison, I can get soup, salmon with one vegetable...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

You still get free nonalcoholic drinks on the NEC in business class. When I went from NJ to CT on one of the Regionals at the end of March, I got my free coffee with no problem.
