    Capitol Limited, Washington-Michigan stations

That is a really good tip about bringing a few plastic utensils. I learned to do that after bringing half of a delicious restaurant lunch back to my hotel once to have for lunch the next day. Then went to eat it and realized I didn’t have a fork!😁

    Good point!

    Long distance survey

I think Amtrak should work on providing its current service well before it tries to add luxury rooms at ridiculous prices. You can’t jump from kindergarten (about where Amtrak is compared to the rest of the world in train service) to college without putting in the work in the intermediate...

    Home Office on Rails

A nice small elevator would make more sense. And in the what’s old is new again category, British country houses often had stairs in the library to reach the higher shelves. But of course they also had staff who could go up there for you and get the book you wanted.

Baseball-loving vegetarian (usually) here, too, and I didn’t get it, either. Probably afraid we’d make them watch groan-worthy highlights from the Phillies’ recent losses until they promise to put traditional dining (as well as the missing parts of the consist) back on the Eaglette.

Best tourist train in New England open in May?

Wonderful—thanks! I’ve copied the title so I can find it. Meanwhile, back to your topic here—lots of choices—hope you enjoy whichever you decide on.

Best tourist train in New England open in May?

You are much more familiar with the area than I am—I just went where my cousins took me, including some needless stops at “antique” (junk) shops on the way down and back.😁 Yes, the dinner does sound like a better option since you’ve done a lot in that area already. What river did you write...

Best tourist train in New England open in May?

I did the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat combo with my cousins—a while back now, maybe 10 or 15 years ago, but can’t imagine it’s changed much. The train seemed more like a convenient way to get people to/from the boat than an attraction itself—a nice peaceful but short ride through some woods...

Northeast Regional, seats together in Coach

I would board at South Station. Get there early and find the redcap area—show them your tickets, and they will take your luggage and help you through the boarding process.

Sitting in Northeast Regional with extended knee?

As usual, AmtrakBlue gives excellent advice. Booking your trip with the PWD designation seems to be the most sensible plan.

Sitting in Northeast Regional with extended knee?

First of all, welcome! I am glad you have healed well enough to start traveling again. And what a lovely place to start and end your journeys! I was in coach recently from Mystic, CT to New Haven and was pleasantly surprised at how much legroom there was. However, I am short (5’1”) and have...

Ferries, Ferries, and still more Ferries

Sounds like the situation was handled calmly and well—nice of them to say they will refund passengers’ trips before anyone asked. Very glad nobody was hurt.

Eaglette and Cardinal, Dallas to DC

I’m glad you like the Viewliner roomette and am glad you got a new one—I like those, too. I was going to say I think you get a fresh air stop at Charlottesville, but you seem to have left there a while back according to the train tracker I follow. Were you able to step off for a few minutes...

Experiences of travel including rail over time in the US

Because I grew up in a small rural town where the travel choices were car or bus, the earliest train rides I remember are when I was 11 — a bit older than many of you here with memories at a very early age — visiting my grandmother in England during my summer vacation. She had retired to Hove...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying it.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I think someone explained it earlier, but I can’t find the post. I think it means seating where you can’t see what (or perhaps, more pertinent in the underworld, who) might be behind you. If you are seated in a restaurant with your back to the door, you are obviously at a disadvantage if one of...

    Crescent discussion

I agree. I think all OBS personnel should be cross-trained on the duties of all positions and be able to pitch in wherever and whenever needed. The best Amtrak crews seem to do this on their own and help each other out.

Experiences of travel including rail over time in the US

I echo everything Trollopian says above—it is hard to lose a parent at any age. Thinking of you during this difficult time.

    Early deboarding

I first took a roomette on one of the Silvers to ALX as my end point from New Jersey (still had real dining cars with real food, so it was a while back!) when I needed to be in the DC area. But I decided to stay in ALX and just go back and forth to DC on the Metro. The ironic thing is that I...

    Early deboarding

You should be fine if you get off at DC, since they change conductors there and a new crew will be “starting fresh” checking tickets. They won’t even notice you’re gone. For Alexandria, I don’t know how that would work, but I can’t see how they can charge you extra on the train for getting off...
