San Bernardino County Transportation Authority unveils hydrogen powered EMUs

For some reason, I always picture hair removal with that term.....

    Russian Railways stressed

Reputedly when they were returning to Russia, the tanks were loaded up with things like bathtubs etc. They even took whole Opel production lines with them (seems like this has happened* several times in history - either requisitioned during war, purchased wholesale or licensed copies - like the...

Caltrain starting public electric service on August 11, 2024

I think Muni has their own source of hydropower - Hetch Hetchy - which is one reason they retained streetcars and trolley buses.

    Russian Railways stressed

The impression I have is that russia is decidedly low-tech at a general level compared to the Ukraine which has quickly caught up to the west and certainly their soldiers were often shocked when they arrived in the Ukraine. If the military had used the station, there might have been documents...

Is Chicago transit ready for the DNC?

This exactly. I remember the previous DNC in the 90's (what was it, '96 I think) which was also at United Center. The CTA had the Medical Center station on the Blue Line scraped down and thoroughly cleaned before the convention, yet there was barely an uptick, if any, in ridership that I...

    Re-nationalisation of British Rail

I had wondered that too - probably not right away.

France's rail network affected by apparent coordinated arson

I think that environmentalist mention was on the BBC or another website. I don't see it being a particularly leftist cause unless it's against mass tourism, which seems to be hot this summer in Europe or housing shortages/Olympic corruption or something. Remember when extinction rebellion glued...

France's rail network affected by apparent coordinated arson

Sounds like France's rail network has been hit with a massive arson attack on the TGV lines just in time for interfering with the opening ceremonies for the Olympics. The blame is being put on "leftist" or "radical environmentalists" - which means they don't know yet. Something like 800,000...

    The Electrification discussion

Hahaha, yes! That's a great picture actually - probably different electric loads and needs (plus not having owned or wanting to own/maintain a brick building). That equipment doesn't - and won't last long if not used - last forever.

    Colorado planning

Very interesting article (and some of the links were fascinating as well). Had those rail routes held on another 5-6 years into the big 70's ski boom they might already have regular services today. There is certainly enough demand year round (certainly in summer & winter plus local/regional...

    The Electrification discussion

Those would make a great re-use project. Funnily enough, if you drive on Route 12 in Indiana, you'll also see electrified railway infrastructure - coinkydink?

    The Electrification discussion

I fell down a rabbit hole earlier this week on Indian suburban rail networks and hadn't realize how early some had been electrified (Mumbai, Chennai and maybe Kolkata [can't remember exactly] ) as early as the mid-20's.

Rail service and travel by rail in India and Bangladesh

Being under the highways means shade and rain protection (in theory) - although, at UIC, the high level walkways leaked on those walking under them. Maybe we should hire Lutyens to do the new station? Think how monumentally elegant that would be?

Yes, that's a very handsome lounge.

Rail service and travel by rail in India and Bangladesh

Wow, that is pretty space age. Honestly don't know if I like it (India has a lot of excellent modern architects...) or not. But it will certainly be something.

Getting from O'Hare to Union Station

Shhhh, don't tell them about the 312/773/606 only subway system or it'll be crawling with tourists!!!!

    Chicago METRA

Typically, on my line, they will announce which car to alight from for flag stops - normally the head car. You will run into one of the conductors (there are always at least two working the train). The train will slow down if there is a flag stop to check for flaggers - if they didn't they would...

Getting from O'Hare to Union Station

Did the OP say when their redeye arrived? Depending on that, the CTA might be the only rail option w/o a long wait.

    Chicago METRA

Very true; my line serves a dense inner city area plus fairly dense suburbs with people who are social. The bus in the evening back to my neighborhood can be absolutely packed but somehow Metra doesn't get that hourly service isn't enough - people would take the train even if it was half hourly...
