Discussion of NJTransit service expansion like MidTown Direct (MTD)

I've seen a video in my YouTube algorithm suggesting something for the Lackawanna Cutoff but haven't bothered to view it (too long for the time I had) - wonder if it was related to this. Really pretty countryside there - hope it doesn't get overdeveloped through sprawl from reinvigorated rail!

    A Tale of Two Cities

My father had a colleague (Welsh) who met his wife (German) on the Dover-Calais ferry - we're probably getting way off topic here. And for our EuroFriends, you might remember Style in '86 Eurovision.

    A Tale of Two Cities

We took a lot of ferries in Europe at various times; most notoriously the M/S Estonia Stockholm to Talinn and back. But also Oslo-Kiel, various Germany-Denmark and Denmark-Sweden ferries (no bridges at the time) both on rail and road (well, car or not even car) trips.

    A Tale of Two Cities

When I was a kid (in the bicentennial no less) we went to Europe and I remember taking a sleeper/night train across the channel. I don't remember getting off the train though and have very, very vague memories of being on the train on a boat.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Will be interesting to see since the floodwaters look to be going through multiple river systems and may take some time to hit the Mississippi.

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

The gist I got was that the parking structure was in poor condition (after having been repaired maybe 10-15 years ago) and needed to be demolished & rebuilt as well as there having been zoning/planning changes and that there was extra/excess land around it that could be better utilized to...

BNSF hit with huge fine for exceeding agreed traffic limits

Indian Reservations are sovereign nations, i.e. countries (or perhaps could be looked upon as somewhat like our other territories, but not quite) which can regulate the commerce within their borders. Hence, it's an international, not interstate, trade issue.

    Backing into Chicago Union Station

CN uses it for freight - oil tank cars, timber, etc.

    Backing into Chicago Union Station

You can see what appears to be fresh ballast in place in that image - and prep for new trackage and double-tracking.

    CTA Ventra

I believe that Metra was free last weekend. No, sorry, that was the other weekend. I dislike the Vulture system immensely. Once I figured out the app it works "ok" but isn't the easiest to use since there are more steps than seem necessary.

    Backing into Chicago Union Station

This was my understanding too. There are a lot of historical inconveniences/akwardnesses around the CUS approaches.

Rail service and travel by rail in India and Bangladesh

This is sort of off top, but sort of on topic (and I do enjoy these India interludes). I was watching a video of the Rome Metro (or one of the electric suburban services, part of which runs through a tunnel) and was reminded of what I think of as being an Indian trait of the barred operable...

The great discussion of seat orientation in trains and planes

That it would explain it/that... Back when flying was fun (the 90's)....

The great discussion of seat orientation in trains and planes

I seem to remember (but this could be a false memory) of backwards facing Southwest seats. I also remember a LOT flight in the 80's with a Soviet made plane with backwards facing seats (a pair of four if memory serves) on each side of the plane.

    SEPTA Bus Network Redesign

I wish the CTA would reexamine it's routes - a lot of them are leftover from trolleybus & streetcar days. Even the numbers are the same (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) - just I feel the whole thing needs some cold hearted, rational analysis for where service is needed or could be sped up...

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

I kind of agree with the argument - it would be nice to have service everywhere, but we should start with big untapped ridership places, like Louisville, Indy, etc, first and then move on to the less populated areas.
