    Article questions VIA direction

Am I reading that table correctly in that the travel time on the Corridor went up about 40 minutes over the past 40 years?

The growth of China's High Speed Rail network

Totally not a surprise... Building where there is no need or demand is expensive.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Don't know whether this was my family or Chicago in general, but I don't remember them being a 'think' until adulthood and something that migrated in from Wisconsin. The Midwest is a big place with a lot of regionalisms.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Looks like that spur would need some rebuilding, double-tracking, a new swing bridge and such, but mostly grade separated at least. I was just looking up the station, hadn't realized that it was 18th busiest in the network (and number 2 in the Midwest). Wonder how much ridership, overall, will...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

I believe that both Metra extension and Milwaukee based commuter rail (along with a private proposal a few years ago to the western suburbs) has been floating, but nothing concrete afaict/afaik. I think there is a gradual push for more Hiawatha service along with potential extensions north to...

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

Last time I was in the UK (2 years ago) everything was card - even Portugal was pretty much cashless (except for small craft stores - only time I needed cash). Europe is way ahead of us - assuming you consider that ahead - in that regard. I think it's also because of the heavy use of debit cards...

What route did this "government girl" take in 1942?

Also, be sure to try some of the local restaurants. The place at the station - kind of a greasy spoon type place - is good value and good.. There is also a good dinner place downtown - upstairs in a commercial building which has good food and drinks with a kind of dim, supper club kind of vibe...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

If I understand what they are doing at Via, they are splitting a train, not dropping cars which would have to be moved out of the way and stored. Not sure that's actually possible at Milwaukee.

Make sure to go to the Enstrom's Toffee factory! It's right downtown GJ.

One dead and 71 injured in long haul flight from London to Singapore

Somebody's been flying this airline... I think I had hot meals on my most recent transatlantic flights (Air Canada & UAL).

One dead and 71 injured in long haul flight from London to Singapore

Sounded like the death was due to a heart attack rather than directly an injury.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Kind of hard to change crews in a city that you don't serve (or a really long deadhead run). I'm guessing they will switch to St. Paul for Winona though, but I'm sure somebody here knows what they actually will do.... So any more first day trip reports???

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Are we going to be live blogging the inaugural runs with champagne (well, ok, old fashioneds and cheese curds) and watching live webcams tomorrow?

Chicago - St. Louis Lincoln Corridor to begin higher speed running

Interesting that the access into STL came up - it's like you guys were reading my mind. I was looking at the MacArthur Bridge yesterday (virtually, not in person) and watching videos of crossing it - really, really slow out from it as it turns north in East Stl. I wonder how much that could be...

Amtrak wins takeover of Washington Union Station

Grimshaw does some pretty nice - and in many cases, innovative and impressive, such as Waterloo International, projects - I'll have to look for more plans and renders of this, the rendering in the article was only ok, but they are very competent transportation architects so it should turn out...

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

Just had a successful jaunt on the T yesterday from the airport to the North End and back (work trip with extra time) - no snafu's like last time and went to new stations. However, the Green Line trains are really looking ratty, tired and, compared the rest of the world, majorly dated. That...

    Colorado planning

Ha, yes! But still a nice job. Funny, I was running arounds yesterday and we saw two Trailways buses nearly simultaneously - one crossing over and another merging and was thinking of the various threads here.

Whoever drew that sign did a nice job with it!

How far can they extend the Amtrak California Capitol Corridor?

Interesting, thanks for posting. So, question, it's not totally clear to me, would this be Amtrak California running the trains or perhaps Caltrain?

    Tampa Union Station

I can't find a reference right now, but was there, at one time, another causeway or bridge for rail across the bay between Tampa & St. Pete? Or was that road/street bridge that was abandoned (what I remember from being told when I visited)? (edit) Interestingly, I found a reference to a...
