Lunch on #97, Silver Meteor (problem with chef)

When trains are that late, it's going to be up to management to decide how to handle the food situation. There may not have been a place that was able to accommodate a large order by the specified time.

    Writers' Residencies

Looks like the winners will be Millenials with thumbs worn down to the bone from tapping on their PDA's every waking hour. PDA? You really dated yourself there! [emoji14]

Lake Shore/Capitol Limited Sleeping Car Menu Refresh 1/16/19

Because of the Railway Labor Act, and associated laws, it wouldn't be nearly as easy to contract out OBS as everyone thinks. For one, the OBS contracts allow us to work without hours of service limitations, meaning we can do those crazy things such as 18 hour days, 3 hours of sleep/downtime at...

    Dinner on 448

It's changed so many times since then. When I was working in Boston I'd glance at the stock for 449, and was surprised to see that they had a few hot item choices, just for the sleepers I believe.

Second Norfolk train starting in March

I'm talking the Boston (or possibly NYP) based OBS, mostly.

Second Norfolk train starting in March

That won't happen. By the time the food gets back in the move, it'd likely be expired, or about to be. Plus what is going to happen with the crews that being the train down on Fridays? Their not going to sit in NFK, being paid, for two days.

    Food Facts Update

Yes, the stew can/should be served order rice if still available.

RFP issued for Amfleet I replacement

There's no reason they even have to modify the equipment. I don't know if you've ever traveled to/through New London on Amtrak, but that station is on a major curve, and is a weird combination of high/low platforms, some of which is even separated by a street crossing. The gap to the high...

Batteries are for emergency lights only. No power to HVAC, outlets, or any kitchen equipment. Think about how high the power requirement would be for all that.

    Choosing Roomettes on SWC

You don't always have to be so argumentative and always be "right"... He only said that unless he has the policy in writing he doesn't expect much. Maybe Steve can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there's anything official in print internally that confirms or denies this policy...

Service Alerts for weekend storm (1/19-20)

It's one thing for commuter rail to scale services back, but typically Amtrak ridership goes up true due to the airlines and bus services being shutdown, and people just wanting to get where they need to be.

Taking my first trip: A bunch of questions

Remember there is a contracted out call center now... Ask the location of the call center next time. If it is indeed Philly, I don't know what to tell you, other than I apologize, but ask for a manager. There are bad agents, and there are great agents as well.

adding a passenger to a sleeper reservation?

I know what the rules are, how many people are allowed per room, etc., but I would insist on having the ticket changed to an open sleeper ticket. For all I know it could be a spotter making sure I follow the rooms. My list trip on 8 I had a passenger who said he upgraded to the 831 sleeper, so...

Taking my first trip: A bunch of questions

You got that right! That job is already 17 hours on duty, so I certainly wasn't happy about sitting so long, less than 2 hours from the end of the trip.

Taking my first trip: A bunch of questions

I'm assuming you mean on the Meteor route in Florida. I got held up on 67 waiting for it several times.

Lake Shore/Capitol Limited Sleeping Car Menu Refresh 1/16/19

I've had two trips on the Builder so far and I've had at least 3 people be very vocal about the LSL/CL meals...

WA anti-tax activist again targets trains and transit

Right....but didn't I already imply that if the sales tax was lower, many people wouldn't have as much care, and wouldn't go to Oregon to tax dodge? Maybe you'd even get some people from Oregon shopping in Washington out of convenience, for that one store that's only in Washington, or there...

WA anti-tax activist again targets trains and transit

Plenty of people in the southern parts of Washington do their shopping in Oregon to save. Just like plenty of people in Massachusetts shop in New Hampshire for the same reason. I can't speak for Oregon/Washington since I'm not familiar in-depth with the workings, but when I worked at a mall...

WA anti-tax activist again targets trains and transit

If it were something like sales tax, then yes... You need to keep in mind that Oregon has no sales tax, while Seattle is at 10.1% (combination of city and state sales taxes). Hell, when I bought my laptop I had it shipped to my PO box in Portland, to avoid both BC PST/GST, and WA sales tax...

    Amtrak Announcements

Believe me I agree with you, but the nagging reminders are because of the company's stance on carrybys.
