Bay Area Rapid Transit retiring "legacy cars" from routine service

I remember when they were new. I was a kid. And what I remember the most was that more often than not, a train would stop for some sort of mechanical issue. But after a while those fabric seats got really nasty since they were hard to clean.

Bay Area Rapid Transit retiring "legacy cars" from routine service

Today is the last day, although BART is saying that they will be kept in reserve and used if needed. I think these including the A cars with the sloped nose and the replacement C cars. The new cars are frankly much nicer. https://www.bart.gov/about/projects/legacy...

Pacific NW locations reached by train

It was interesting when they had "hard" tickets. They could be purchased directly from a manned ticket window or a Quik-Trak kiosk; both could also add the AGR account. It was also possible to purchase online, get a barcode, then use that to collect a ticket at Quik-Trak or a ticket window...

Pacific NW locations reached by train

So what happened? I looked it up and they used to have multi-rides and monthlies. Don't see it as an option any more. This says it was updated in 2016. https://www.amtrakcascades.com/multi-ride-tickets I haven't bought multi-ride ticket since maybe 2014. I'm looking at a RIC-SJC...

Pacific NW locations reached by train

The thing I'm thinking of regarding pricing is what I rode the most often, which was Capitol Corridor. And it could get really odd too with the pricing. I remember when I booked a Coast Starlight trip from Richmond (since discontinued as a CS stop) or Emeryville to San Jose with my kid, and...

Pacific NW locations reached by train

Yeah - I wasn't quite sure where it was. And the original topic mentions the Coast Starlight where I guess it's implied that it's about the same route from Seattle to Portland. The only time I've taken the Coast Starlight from Seattle, I was in the dining car having lunch at a table with a...

Pacific NW locations reached by train

The original Queen Mary is still in Long Beach. Disney owned it (was formerly owned by the former owner of the Disneyland Hotel among other properties) for a time, along with the Spruce Goose, although Disney got out of those two decades ago. I think the Spruce Goose is in Oregon now, and the...

Pacific NW locations reached by train

I've been thinking of visiting Portland, and wondered what might be possible without a car. It was a long time ago, but once we visited McMenamin's Edgefield in Troutdale, which I understand is accessible by bus.

    Saudi Airlines?

There are different Dramamine formulas. One was called "Dramamine 2" (now "Dramamine Less Drowsy") and contains meclizine, which doesn't cause much drowsiness. Apparently dimenhydrinate has a similar mechanism as diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Some take that to help with motion sickness, where...

Help with layover in Los Angeles. What to do in 12 hours?

I don't know about that. Only been to the Getty once, and that day (a Saturday) traffic was horrible on I-405 (yeah I don't use SoCal highway lingo). The biggest problem would be getting stuck in traffic. I've had 10 hours from LAX just to see what I could do, and I only used public...

Canceling vs modifying a ticket bought with points

I've mentioned this before, but I missed a train CS round trip and was only charged a 10% penalty on coach. I might have been able to modify by calling AGR, but I was in a hurry and it would have been cancelled without a points refund had I not just cancelled and requested my points back.

Help with layover in Los Angeles. What to do in 12 hours?

The Getty is really hard to get to without a car. Even with a car it requires parking and then taking their tram. They do claim that Angels Flight is the shortest in the world, but it might be difficult to prove. Cash fare is $1 each way, but only 50 cents from the TAP interagency fare card...

    Fort Bragg, California/Mendocino County

My family is talking about making a weekend trip (not Amtrak) fairly close to the San Francisco Bay Area. Strangely enough, I don't think we've ever been on the California coast anywhere north of Bodega Bay on CA-1 or perhaps as far north as Healdsburg on US-101. We did visit Sonoma County...

    NNRY in Nevada

Don't think I've ever been to Ely. The major freeway through Nevada to Utah is I-80, so Elko and Wells get more traffic. I've been to the two branches of the Nevada State Railroad Museum - the main location in Carson City and the southern branch in Boulder City. We've gone on the short...

    Timely Ticket scanning

I've missed #11 in Emeryville as a round trip. It was bizarre because we heard an announcement to wait in "the garden area" and then the train actually stopped. There was a family that also missed the train. We were only making a day trip to Salinas. The family was going down to LA and had...

    Early deboarding

I started thinking about this with the controversy over the kid who was tossed off a flight where he apparently admitted that he was doing hidden city ticketing (aka "skiplagging"). That's not specifically an issue with Amtrak, and I've booked tickets a different endpoints - especially if the...

Lesser known Railroad Museums in small towns

There are quite a few of these in Northern California near or even on active station property. Often they're housed in original station buildings that aren't being used as such and may have been relocated. https://www.sbhrs.org https://www.msvrr.org...

Mendocino County Skunk Train denied right to use eminent domain

This was a couple of weeks ago, but here's an update. https://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/news/mendocino-county-judge-refuses-to-set-aside-ruling-against-skunk-train-owne/ The railway claims it has authority as a public utility to acquire the property at a fair price for the greater public...

Hotels near Rail Transit and Commuter Rail

I've stayed in several of their hostels, which I mentioned in a PM. But it's interesting that they currently required an active membership for US stays or charge $3 per day otherwise. I paid my $18 for the membership but at this point I'm not sure I'm going back before that membership expires...

Hotels near Rail Transit and Commuter Rail

The US public health emergency is officially over, and I haven't experienced any place that still requires the typical stuff from the past few years such as masking or checks on vaccination status. I suppose that might be your concern that there aren't such restrictions any more and it might...
