Do major airline disruptions ever affect Amtrak?

Love the dual codes you posted. I always have the tendency use airport codes (after 45 years in aviation) even when planning Amtrak trips. Someone mentions New Orleans I instantly think MSY not NOL. Or YYZ or YUL.

Amtrak nurse (proposal for the future)

We (at least some-not me though?) are overall healthier than we were in the 1950's - 2000's for heart issues. AEDs should still be common on all modes of commercial transportation.

Amtrak nurse (proposal for the future)

There is always a good chance that there is an MD, RN, NP or EMS professional as a passenger on board that could assist. The automatic defibrillator (AED) should be on every train. They run from $599 and up. And probably less in large bulk orders.

Do major airline disruptions ever affect Amtrak?

Specially if you take into account where Skywest, Republic, Envoy and other regionals fly. Many smaller communities even some that Amtrak serve. About half the flights in/out of Denver (DIA) look like Skywest. I would think that Amtrak is a very viable alternative.

California Zephyr which direction is best

Done both and definitely would go westbound from Denver.

Is a surge protector extension cord allowed on a train?

I always carry these. Very compact. Never an issue.

    Large plane discussion

Excellent explanation. After many years in the industry and on the tarmac/ramp I have been told by several ramp agents that the best and easiest duties was working the "Honey Bucket". Just pay close attention to what your doing.

PSR: What is it? Why is it bad? What does it mean for the future?

Well as for my house (MM 527-BNSF Brush Sub) when the "trackers" show ON TIME at 19:10 from DUS they can pass by at 19:32 when no slow downs or stops. It was rare but has happened. Median time (showing departing on time) passing me was 19:38 from 06/30/2017-10/06/2018 when I was able to...

PSR: What is it? Why is it bad? What does it mean for the future?

ASMAD's (Amtrak's database) times don't always jive. Have seen #6 show departing Denver but then not move for 30 minutes to an hour later. They pass my home just about 22 minutes after departure if no enroute delays. BTW those have been much more frequent recently as they have been put into a...

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

I have used the "Shaver Only" outlet in bedrooms to charge camera batteries with no issues. And the seatback outlet for laptop, phone, GPS and scanner also never an issue.

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

I always carry these. A short cord and a 3-120v/2-USB surge protector that swivels.

    Catching the train in Seattle

I have had a cell since they first came out in the late 70's for business. I used to deliver parts to Southern Bell/AT&T research lab that developed them in Nashville. Now I hate the dern things but partner and I keep them for emergency and health reasons. FYI the ol' Motorola "Brick" was...

    Route Timetable PDFs returning? (2021-2022)

Been doing the same thing for a few years. Great for building your itineraries with a spot for (your) actual times and notes along the way. Here's a sample I did for a DEN(or FMG)-EMY-SEA-EMY-DEN(or FMG) trip back in August, 2016. Sadly I didn't get to do it due to health issues. But I keep...

    Catching the train in Seattle

Was on Verizon for about 15 years and very pleased with the service (not necessarily the price) And I've been with Comcast/Xfinity (TV, Internet, WiFi) for 40+ years. When Xfinity Mobile started I found out they utilize the Verizon network. So as soon as my contract was up I changed over to...

Discussion with a friend on rail transport

Appreciate the link. Very informative and interesting. One quick item I notice was that gas is actually up from 2012 by 6.44%. My assumption is that is due to many coal fired plants converting to gas as a much cleaner fuel.

Discussion with a friend on rail transport

I agree hyrdo and geothermal are great ideas also but limited as to where they are feasible. Wind is a blight on the landscape not to mention aviary. Solar has major issues after service life with toxic waste.

Discussion with a friend on rail transport

The comment does not relate to "costs" of providing power. That is going to be there no matter what. I am referring to the emissions created. Even if all transportation were electric there would still be an emission produced making the power to power them. Now if we were 100% nuclear power...

    Chicago to Emeryville on Zephyr

Agree 100%. First trip on the CZ I meet a Cicero, IL Police detective still in his suit straight from work in the lounge while we were still in CUS. He asked if I had been on this trip before and I said no. He said I don't know how religious you are but from Denver to Salt Lake will make you...

How is it that "zero net emissions" come into play for electrification?
