    Midwest Venture introduction

So I'm guessing checked baggage service on the Hiawatha is going to end.

Business class on the Illini/Saluki is a ripoff

This guy made a video about the same thing.

Amtrak is finally coming to Scranton!

I could be wrong, but isn't the Lackawanna Cutoff grade separated? I feel like they could easily run trains on there at 125 mph easily.

Splitting ticket between coach and sleeper

Not a problem. 8 pm is a bit late for dinner anyway so I'd rather eat before I leave. And, I still get breakfast and lunch the next day.

Splitting ticket between coach and sleeper

So, I noticed that on the City of New Orleans, the cost of a roomette is nearly half price if departing from Centralia than from Chicago. So I bought a coach ticket from Chicago to Centralia, and then a roomette the rest of the way to New Orleans. That way I can get a good night sleep once it...

So, are they just never coming to the Illini/Saluki? The one train I regularly use.

    Speed limits on shared track

I know that, but I was once told that passenger trains cannot go faster than 90 mph on tracks shared with freight, but I know this isn't true.

    Speed limits on shared track

I read somewhere that the FRA does not allow speeds greater than 90 mph on tracks that are shared with passengers and freight. I know for a fact that this is not true, as the Michigan line runs at 110 mph, and so does a short section of Union Pacific track in Illinois. These sections of tracks...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

In my opinion, the bedrooms need to be ripped out out and replaced with more roomettes. They have the same capacity as a roomette, but take up so much more space. And let's be honest, the only people buying the bedrooms are enthusiasts with a lot of money and time.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Here's something Nightjet is testing out. Though I think a bed-only setup like this would really only work for a route that's overnight only (such as 66/67 or a theoretical LA-SF route). More info here: Inside Austria’s next-gen Nightjet sleeper trains - Runway Girl

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I rode Nightjet in Germany and it's possible you might be sleeping with up to 5 other people, but that's unlikely. However for only an extra 50 euros or so, you get the whole couchette to yourself (I booked two people. It might be more expensive travelling solo). If I'm travelling solo, I don't...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

The luggage racks on the superliners are already too small for anything other than a backpack. The only luggage racks are downstairs and full up quickly. Even if I can get a spot on the downstairs luggage rack, you have to hope that no one will steal your bags or takes them on accident. I know...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Ok. So I admit that maybe my proposal wouldn't work for the long distance trains. However, where I think a train of only business class "delta pods" or slumber coaches would work is if there was a new, nonstop, overnight train between LA and San Francisco. It would be perfect. You leave at 9 pm...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I wonder what capacity would be like if the entire passenger train fleet was just the "delta one" cars. No coach. No sleeping cars. Just the sleeping pods. Looking at images on Google, it seems that they take up about as much space as a long distance coach row of seats. So and entire train car...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Yes. I feel that a cheaper lay flat option would definitely work on routes like the City of New Orleans, Capital Limited, and of course, the Auto Train. These are routes that they've a major city in the evening, and arrive in another major city in morning or afternoon.l the next day. If they can...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Yup. If only Americans weren't so concerned about privacy, we could have shared sleeper cars like in Europe, and the price would be the same as a coach seat.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

My dream would be for Amtrak to have coaches similar to the business class on overnight intercontinental flights, with the seat that lies flat and turns into a little bed. This would give people who want to travel overnight but don't want to cough up the money for a sleeping car a better option.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I know everyone is going to hate this because the superliners have a lot of fans, but the superliners have a lot of problems from a passenger perspective. First of all, the the steps are too narrow and difficult to go up/down while carrying a suitcase. It is also annoying when people are trying...

Amtrak Cafe service, vending machines etc. discussion

Oh heck no. I can't stand when people who aren't eating anything just hang out in the cafe car, especially when I'm traveling with a group and we all want to eat together. Now, full disclosure, I mostly ride on the regional trains out of Chicago where only half of the cafe car has table seating...
