Lessons learned from CHI-STL HSR YouTube video from High Speed Rail Alliance

MI line KAL-DER has a lot of curves to deal with plus the implementation of ITCS. KAL-BTL works (354 hit 103mph this evening just west of BTL) and so far looks to be exceeding 79mph on its way to Pontiac.

    Capitol Limited discussion

no one knows, apparently there was some sort of lead issue with the on board potable water system.

Shooting in train or on platform at Chicago Union Station (08/24/21)

the last time TSA tried to search on Amtrak property it ended up with TSA being thrown off the station by Amtrak PD. Kind of amusing actually. https://www.cnn.com/2012/02/06/opinion/don-phillips-tsa-vipr-teams/index.html

Freight Railroad Hall of Shame, list of recent delays to Amtrak by freight trains

I’m gonna save you some time now: A3, A5, A382, and A383 are all held up at MP155 on the Mendota Subdivision for a broken rail. The repair crew is a few hours out and they’re not sure it’s in good enough shape to run trains so that’s gonna account for a few of your delays.

    Capitol Limited discussion

I’m not sure I would call it dumb. When you cut back on service you need to cut back on workforce to stay alive, or you’re going to be losing a lot more money. A lot of Delta outstations cut back on staff to just a bare-bones crew during the height of the pandemic because there just wasn’t...

How to contact Amtrak ConnectUS Team

Until something like this, without being checked, is used in front of officials who they’re looking to get funding from. I can tell you that MDOT won’t hesitate to point out the errors if Amtrak is asking them for more money…. In my book, if you’re asking someone to do something “risky” for...

How to contact Amtrak ConnectUS Team

Hi all, i was looking over some of the new information on the ConnectUS page (new icons that talk about the corridors in detail) and the Chicago-Toronto segment had some rather impressive errors listed: 1) Under “proposed stations”, they listed every station served by the Michigan Service line...

Freight Railroad Hall of Shame, list of recent delays to Amtrak by freight trains

I agree. I think upper management is finally starting to realize the issues that PSR presents especially now with the crush of demand on the intermodal terminals. The BN is reopening an facility in the greater Memphis area to help alleviate congestion and I heard there was a double-digit number...

    Worst Trackage on Amtrak

It still is 90 on a significant portion of the route that still has ATS.

Freight Railroad Hall of Shame, list of recent delays to Amtrak by freight trains

I wouldn’t be so quick to judge freight railroads’ physical plants. Like everything, they suffer from wear and tear. I think on a normal day I get four or five different emails regarding track indications along the Chicago Division. Sometimes they happen on their own, sometimes after a train...

Freight Railroad Hall of Shame, list of recent delays to Amtrak by freight trains

As someone who works for a US Class I and seeing first hand what goes into running it, I can help shed some light. My particular facility is in the metro Chicago area. We see multiple Amtrak trains a day by our terminal. Every effort is made to clear up ahead of them and dispatchers will not...

Are Amtrak maintenance shops open 24/7?

Railroad DSF and car shops like Chicago are operating typically 24/7.

    Lincoln service speed limit increased

Indeed. Apple as well. Told me it would take 30 minutes to get from O’Hare to my hotel, took 45 and it didn’t tell me to get into the express lanes on 90.

    Lincoln service speed limit increased

Except one of those railroad is spending $3bn in capital this year for upgrades…the others aren’t. Go BN or go home.

    Midwest Venture introduction

Midwest didn’t order cab cars. And there’s really only so much testing one can do. Easier to deadhead the crews into Chicago for training than ship test trains to them.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

I don’t know if I’d say it’s poor QC since that’s exactly what they looked like in the official renderings. I’d say whoever designed the livery screwed it up. Can’t blame Siemens, they were just doing their job.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

Apparently the paint isn’t symmetrical on either side. The navy blue and red arrow is father back on the fireman’s side. Was hoping it was just a render error because it drives my OCD crazy but I guess not. This isn’t the final livery either, they’re still working on that.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Interesting. I’m not sure if maybe it was missed somewhere, but I don’t recall ever once reading about any of that in the NGEC meeting notes.

    Amtrak FY22 Grant Request

NS should’ve been handed a nice punishment a long time ago for the way they’ve treated Amtrak services, especially in Michigan. Wholly criminal in their behavior. It continues on the Chicago Line. From what I heard (second hand info, do with it what it what you will), NS built up capacity...

    Amtrak FY22 Grant Request

I agree, but there were significant issues with trying to buy up ROW between Porter and Chicago. Not only would several lift bridges need to be placed back into service (or replaced altogether), there are some areas where the current NS right of way can’t expand any further on either side...
