    Best Amtrak CEOs

I would agree while nearing break-even is a good, breaking even via 1000 cuts is not the way to do it. I would also agree that Amtrak needs to focus on their corridor expansion and use the data from there to evaluate potential additions to the LD network for a more “direct” routing. Overhauling...

Atlanta temporarily lost checked baggage service - now restored

Im not talking about baggage cars or the Crescent. The person I was quoting was talking about Superliner equipment.

Atlanta temporarily lost checked baggage service - now restored

Devil’s advocate here, or at minimum a potential alternate theory: are those cars being removed to reduce passenger interest, or are they being removed because of mechanical issues? It’s no secret that the Superliner fleet is getting up there in age, and things may have gotten to the point where...

KCS accepts CN's merger offer...What does this mean for Amtrak?

Given the length of the line I could see it being spun off to a shortline operator. Amtrak could also be a possibility if they can get the capital together for it. But it would be a small corridor

KCS accepts CN's merger offer...What does this mean for Amtrak?

https://www-theglobeandmail-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.theglobeandmail.com/amp/business/article-canadian-national-to-divest-kansas-city-southerns-70-mile-rail-line/ Not sure about the veracity of the source but apparently CN is divesting the line between Baton Rouge and NOL to satisfy...

    Amtrak FY22 Grant Request

Anyone notice that the grant request no longer includes Right of Way acquisition between Porter and Chicago? At least not that I saw on the projects oage

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

From what I know about the California services, those bi-levels are owned by Cal DOT, at least on the Capitol Corridor. I’m pretty sure the Surfliner equipment is State owned too. Those lines, especially the Surfliner, are pretty popular. You could check out the ridership states on Amtrak’s...

Craziest Drama on Amtrak you've seen?

Only drama I ever had was the Conductor on 8 warning passengers that whoever was smoking the reefer at Havre was going to be found out if they kept doing it, and that it was illegal on the federal level and therefore illegal on Amtrak. Also mentioned that drug dogs usually board at Havre and it...

KCS accepts CN's merger offer...What does this mean for Amtrak?

CN may not treat VIA or Amtrak very well, but CP’s operations management up there hasn’t exactly been stellar either. Trainmasters and other managers have directed crews to do dangerous things or ignored safety concerns that at one point derailed a train and cost the lives of three people.

KCS accepts CN's merger offer...What does this mean for Amtrak?

Yeah I was pretty tired when I wrote that 😴 I would be that CN tries to sell off or spin off their current line south of Champaign or St. Louis and keep the KCS main into Texas and Mexico, or some variation of that idea, whichever is fastest.

    Delayed #22/422( 5/16)

Try using asm.transitdocs.com. Sometimes it doesn’t work (it appears to be down as I type this), but it feeds off of Amtrak status maps and is generally a little more reliable

    Delayed #22/422( 5/16)

Texas Eagle delayed departing SAS due to late inbound equipment. Sunset Limited out of LAX on 5/14 delayed due to weather issues in/around Sanderson, operating 5 hours 15 minutes late.

KCS accepts CN's merger offer...What does this mean for Amtrak?

Not necessarily. Agreed that it doesn’t look good, but from reading about railroad mergers, the company trying to conduct the merger (in this case, CN), will have to make significant concessions to address anti-competitive issues (allowing trackage rights, selling certain areas to other...

KCS accepts CN's merger offer...What does this mean for Amtrak?

Oh I don’t disagree that the freight companies can and will fight it every way they can. For years NS tried screwing over the Wolverine and Blue Water by failing to maintain the eastern end of the Michigan Line between Kalamazoo and Dearborn. At one point I think the section between Kalamazoo...

KCS accepts CN's merger offer...What does this mean for Amtrak?

I don’t believe they need to be convinced. My understanding is that Amtrak can force them to comply with starting new service.

    448/449 Bustitution

The Amtrak release specifically says it’s MBTA work, unless you’re referring to something different.

    448/449 Bustitution

Legitimate question: Is Amtrak management lazy, or does Springfield not have the facilities to handle a turnaround service? I believe that Albany is the closest crew base/servicing area, so it would make sense to cut it there. It may not be feasible to service the consist at Springfield.

Whats with freight delays and speed restrictions?

A lot of it depends on the aircraft you’re on, the airport you’re flying to, etc. Mainline aircraft have better capabilities and typically fly into more “advanced” airports than the CRJ-200 that many bare bones stations see. The 200 was never designed to be an airliner, it was designed as a biz...

    448/449 Bustitution

I know nothing of the MBTA so I am by no means an expert, but my educated guess is that the infrastructure projects are such where a bustitution is more cost-effective for passengers than operating the segment by rail. Late spring into the summer is the start of the MoW season and there are a...

    448/449 Bustitution

Directly from the above link: “Train 448 will follow the above schedule change on Sundays, June 5 and 12.” Blaming Amtrak for adjustments due to track work being performed by another entity?
