Craziest Drama on Amtrak you've seen?

So much pot has been smoked on the EB. I wouldn't recognize that train without the stoners.

Questions re: Reserved Coach vs. Coach vs. Unreserved Coach onboard the Capitol Limited

In Amtrak "reserved" really means guaranteed seats, as in you won't have to stand in the aisle (something I had to do in the unreserved era on the IL Zephyr from Macomb when school break started). I think the term "reserved" confuses people who don't ride a lot because it means something...

Has Anyone done the NYC to CA Run?

I've done SEA-CHI-BOS, then returned NYC-CHI-SEA. Did it all in coach in the summer of 2000. My back was younger then.

Chicago, South Shore and South Bend track realignment in Michigan City

Yeah, you just won't be able to board or disembark at a street-level station anymore. Street running will be going on for quite a while as they construct the double tracking along 10th and 11th.

Metra signs contract for new passenger cars

I agree with the comments about them looking ugly and boxy. I suspect the design is based on them needing to be able to be used interconnected with the older cars. So as to how these will be deployed I think they will have trains with a mix of old and new cars for quite a few years. Everyone...

    Metro North to Penn Station

I've been hoping for this project to get going for so long. I used to have to do some work at Einstein Med School in Morris Park. I remember standing on Morris Park Ave and Eastchester waiting for the bus to get to the subway watching Amtrak trains go by across the street, at the very spot where...

    Texas Eagle Sightseer lounge discontinued

At some point Amtrak will end up looking like Cambodia's train system before the rebuild, empty box cars that everyone strings up their own hammocks. And the once-a-week schedule.

    Covid Mask Mandate for Transportation

    FDA just announced the approval.

Intercity Bus Cuts Due to Pandemic

Does anyone know the situation with Magabus in Indianapolis? When you go on their website and start typing "Indi..." in to the schedule search nothing comes up. They still have an Indianapolis page but you can't search any busses to/from there. Don't know if they have cancelled permanently or...

    Palm Springs Station

Right there is just one example of what is wrong with train service in this country. Even a train lover on a train message board chooses to fly over the train due to a schedule and/or station location just not being workable. One daily train (or worse, three a week in this case) causes a lot of...

    Covid Mask Mandate for Transportation

Expecting approval for 12-15 year-olds any day now. I've got a 12-year-old so this is what I've been anxiously awaiting. Hopefully the under 12 kids by the end of the year...

    Covid Mask Mandate for Transportation

One of the reasons that vaccine passports would have been a good idea. Those who are fully vaccinated could ride/fly unmasked but not those who have yet to be vaccinated. That could be the incentive right there. Yes, there are people who cannot get the vaccine due to some medical issue (though...

    Rumors/facts about Superliner refurbishment/replacement

I know there are reasons that the Superliners aren't the best choice, but I do love them for being able to ride up high. They also feel roomier, especially when they still use the downstairs of the Sightseer Lounge for tables and the cafe service. I hated a few years ago when I went on the Cap...

    First ever Amtrak Experience

You can't even catch a bus from Macomb to anywhere now. No intercity bus service at all. I still go to Macomb on a fairly regular basis (one of my best friends was a theatre professor there until he retired a few years ago) and being able to catch evening trains both ways is so nice now. And the...

    First ever Amtrak Experience

Having grown up in suburban Atlanta, Amtrak was not on my radar as it was not anything my family did. My love of train riding probably began when the first MARTA line opened from downtown to the eastern suburbs close to me when I was 9-years-old. I started going to school in the city when I was...

Will commuter rail regain popularity again?

There is definitely an argument to be made (which I've seen in an op-ed recently that I can't find to link to) for a massive investment in bus transit that would allow for frequent and convenient service in the suburbs.

Will commuter rail regain popularity again?

Will commuter rail regain popularity again?

^^^^^^This! ^^^^^^ They have been needing to do this for years but now more than ever. Commuter rail in this country needs to act more like S-Bahn trains in Europe and serve more than just suburban office workers and become actual regional rail systems.

    Biden Infrastructure Details

Yes, but German medical tourism is about attracting wealthy people from other countries (especially the Arab world) to spend a lot of money rather than people with lesser means looking to save money on care that is very expensive in America.

Legislation to Provide Permanent Funding for Amtrak

Fair point. Ideally this dedicated funding should also come with an upfront chunk of capital funding to catch up with lapsed maintenance and the ability to buy a ton more cars.
