Elizabeth Line and some additional bits about Transport for London

Correct, Heathrow Express is still a separate, higher fare, service.

Elizabeth Line and some additional bits about Transport for London

No, I know that part, the phased opening. So you were on the line that has already been running or were you actually in the new tunnel?

Cool! How did you get to ride on it? Was there some sort of "soft opening?"

    Irish rail trip possibilities

I love his videos. I've been watching him for a long time. He really gets lots of press access now to events, like taking a ride on the Elizabeth Line a couple of months ago (it opens this upcoming Tuesday) and at a factory for new tube cars he interviewed the Mayor of London. He's such an...

    Overnight on the Chicago El

Solid suggestion. I'm always wanting to use the North Central Service but the infrequent schedule never lines up with when I need to arrive/depart at the airport. If you need to go from O'Hare to Union Station and the times match up this is your best option. (The infrequency is probably why most...

    Irish rail trip possibilities

I'll second the Cliffs of Moher suggestion, they are quite amazing. I loved the west of Ireland overall. Also, the village of Dingle is quite amazing. I've also stayed in the town of Kinvara which is a nice little village of less than 800 people about a 40-minute bus ride south of Galway.

    Overnight on the Chicago El

Trogdor pretty much summed it up in a pretty detailed way. All of the issues he mentioned are why the Blue Line in particular has been so bad. In short, first thing is it is undependable. He mentioned that you cans sometimes wait 30-45 minutes for a train and he is not exaggerating. Even more...

Kid films himself trespassing on railroad equipment and illegally throwing switches

I will say though that some of the comments on the videos are quite mean-spirited, making nasty comments about kids with autism and even the word ******** is being thrown around. He's a kid, kids do stupid stuff but also have a capacity to learn from their mistakes. He's obviously a very nerdy...

    Brand new coaches in India

It would be a huge deal if the Chicago-based corridor trains serving downstate IL, MI, Milwaukee, and St. Louis went away.

    Overnight on the Chicago El

I've been choosing the bus over the L a lot more lately myself (when I'm not biking, which is my main mode), especially in off (any non-rush) hours. The Blue Line especially has been such a s**t-show lately that my family likely won't take it to the airport in July when we fly out for our...

    Transit connectivity to airports

I also like how the system there connects their commuter rail as thru-lines instead of only terminating downtown. You can get through downtown to North Philly from the airport in a one-seat ride, which is so convenient.

    Transit connectivity to airports

Yeah, I love Philly's setup. No super long walks to get to the stations.

Boeing to move headquarters to Arlington,VA.

I think if the company had just moved here without any sort of public money pledged you'd have a point. But with the level of taxpayer money extorted from the city and the state there really hasn't been a net positive for Chicago. (Also, right after the deal they moved their corporate jet...

    Senior transit fares and cards

Metra, CTA, and Pace Bus in Chicago are annoying because you have to have an "RTA-issued Reduced Fare Permit" to get the senior fare. I don't think there is a residency requirement (but I could be wrong) but it is essentially a de facto residency requirement since visitors to Chicago are not...

Boeing to move headquarters to Arlington,VA.

I'm curious why you think it was good for us. I see no benefit we got form Boeing being here and we gave them a truckload of cash. They didn't really even provide much in the way of jobs since they moved employees from Seattle.

    Transit connectivity to airports

Yeah, it would be so nice if a train like the L in Chicago actually stopped at all the terminals separately instead of a central station that is then a long walk to any terminal, except terminal 5 which requires the people mover after you've watched your L train go right past that terminal on...

    Amtrak Board

Hospitality background is a good point, have there been many board members with that background before? The hospitality-centered area of Amtrak seems to be what generates a lot of complaints and ill-will toward the organization, especially on long-distance routes. Getting someone from, say, the...

    Rail stations at Airports

What I love about traveling to Europe is that there are so many airports with trains station right there, so many of them are part of the national network. (Rather than only a commuter line to the city center). It's such a shame we don't have more of that here.

Could countdown clocks partially explain the increase of violence on US subways?

It actually does violate a city ordinance. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it is what it is. We need to deal with homelessness in this country in some other way rather than criminalizing it.

Could countdown clocks partially explain the increase of violence on US subways?

Yeah, I don't buy the countdown clock argument either (I also think the alderman there, Tunney, is an *****) and you made the point that I was going to make, the countdown clocks have been there for a long time now and there is no correlation with an uptick in crime. And that the uptick in...
