New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

Adding up to 3 long distance trains a day would make sense on the long distance routes. Most of them, even the ones out west had 3 and 7 trains per day. Going up to 3 and having them alternate the smaller stops is a good idea. I do think in addition to that, adding a 2 round trip per day coach...

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

More North/South trains besides a Chicago/Florida train and a Twin Cities/Texas route, both of which I support. If the North Coast Limited gets restored, which given the current goings on in Washington, Montana, and Minnesota, they are just need to get North Dakota on board and Amtrak to get the...

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

Shovel ready or not, the original map is pretty pathetic and I can imagine the service levels being as underwhelming. Most of these added lines are going to add what 4 round trips per day max, some will be 2 and some 1. I know some would run more than that by 2035 (I hope at least) but still...

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

A NightJet like service could potentially do well between Denver and DFW. It would also provide a connection south of Pueblo.

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

I've talked about this one with my partner and bit and the reason why Colorado is planning on only doing Fort Collins to Pueblo has to do with politics in Colorado. Colorado will likely have to create a special agency/district to get dedicated taxes to fund the line long term. Which means having...

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

I'm not a boomer and I can see the value of having long distance trains. From a public service perspective, they allow a lot of people to make short trips along the length of the route. Short and Medium distance routes need to be funded by Congress, but that is a different story. A lot of places...

RFP issued for Amfleet I replacement

What is it with people here wanting to actively make Amtrak worse? Leave that to management.

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

There are tracks between Memphis and Nashville. I have no idea what state of repair they are in, but they exist. Nashville/Memphis could also be a good service on the some day list. But this map as a whole is really underwhelming.

What they want to roll out in 15 years should be what they kick out annually for 15 years.

I'm saying if the feds were to give a guaranteed subsidy for Amtrak to run state services that that funding should have a mandate to be handled by the State DOT rather than a collection of local governments. If they want added service, I think those arrangements should be allowed to be formed...

I completely agree. They tried it for the last ~10 years and all we are is down 1 route, 1 extension cancelled, 1 new route also cancelled. And what is even on the docket now? The New Orleans - Mobile line which might get done, a Chicago - St Paul train and what else? I would rather there be a...

Legislation to Provide Permanent Funding for Amtrak

I was also late to this. I personally don't think dedicated funds of ~$5 billion will forever free Amtrak from Congressional dependence and micromanaging. Amtrak has been capital starved for so long that it wouldn't take much for the ~$5 billion to not mean much to its operations. Just replacing...

Legislation to Provide Permanent Funding for Amtrak

Dedicated funding is nice and I do support it, but *approximately* $5.4 billion is not enough to fully make Amtrak independent from Congress. Replacing the Superliners could easily eat up half of that in one year. And since this is funding for grants, I will question how the money is allotted...

    Flynn on Amtrak

Before Amtrak took over passenger services in the US, there were Tourist sleepers and they ranged in capacity from 24 to 32 people. I'm aware that things were different because of regulations. But, Budd's original concept for the Slumber Coach in 1946 was a 32 duplex roomette style...

Amtrak unveils new 50th Anniversary units & Phase VII paint scheme

I personally don't like either of Amtrak's logos and like the present one the least. For whatever reason, I think "agriculture" when I see the Amtrak logo. That being said, they're original logo was pretty bland as well. Maybe for the 50th, they should also think of reworking their general...

AmeriStarRail and the Grand Junction Railroad

I find their proposed service levels interesting and thing some of them are good ideas, but other than that, eh.... Its not something that is likely to happen and I doubt Amtrak will steal their ideas. So its just more paper as far as I'm concerned.

And OBB charges 44€ for a bed in a 4 person couchette. What one company markets a product for and charges in turn has nothing to do with the behavior of a company it doesn't compete with. If there is demand for something similar to how Via treats is sections, then that is a different discussion...

    Flynn on Amtrak

One thing I've said when this subject comes up is that a lie flat seat is more about market expansion than cannibalization of existing demand. Right now, Amtrak has little value to me for long distance trips. I would take the train to LA, Portland, or Denver, but at the present moment, the cost...

How Amtrak, Excursion Trains, and Good Marketing could all coexist in the German Style

I have a few thoughts on the matter and have had some over the years. On the subject of running steam and other heritage runs, I think its a good idea. Not sure how Amtrak could swing it, but it would generate good will and publicity. I have thought about the prospect of Amtrak working with...
