    Seating Protocol

That must have been a really long time ago; I think the CL only served Lima during the time it was a section of the Broadway. But it does bring up an interesting point, because they do a similar thing currently when boarding in Chicago (and probably also in WAS, though I haven't ridden that...

    Seating Protocol

A low budget solution would be to use card stock of a different color to indicate seats to be kept free for passengers boarding down the line at a specific station. Instead of a seat check these could be called a "pre check" except that name is already sort of taken. They could be preprinted...

Will Silver Star sleeper pricing go up next year?

Which raises the question, why is she fat? Surely not from dining on board the Silver Starvation....

Looks like USA isn't the only place with train problems

Better a slightly longer ride (from BER to the city) on a train than a shorter ride (from TXL to the city) on a bus, which is often even more ridiculously overcrowded than the airport.

Santiago, Chile to Eureka, California: Someday this will be by train

From Wikipedia: Since LADE of Argentina took its 707-320Bs from regular service in 2007, Saha Airlines of Iran was the last airline to keep 707s in scheduled passenger service until April 2013, though it continued to use them for charter cargo flights until 2019, when their final 707 on lease...

Trump Treatening VETO of 2020 Spending over Amtrak?

It's not just the amount of the subsidy but the fact that, as we've seen in past shutdowns, Amtrak can keep running for weeks or months even when other essential services are interrupted. The patience of both congress and the general public would run out long before Amtrak's cash on hand.

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

Straight South from Philadelphia would involve a very long bridge from the Outer Banks to the Bahamas. Chicago to Cleveland or Charleston and then straight South would hit Florida, but lacks infrastructure. If a train were to be routed Chicago to Charlottesville to Greensboro to Cary to Miami...

    LRR Rides the LSL

Figuring out which car to board seemed to be confusing, understandably so. They were pointed forward with the directions "sleeper, business class" and commented "we're just sleeper, right?", later referring to bedrooms as "business class sleeper rooms." Imagine the disappointment if they find...

A train ride around Rangoon, Mayanmar! (Burma)

I rode that in 2013, and it looks like there haven't been any changes. Quite the experience!

    Upcoming Site Software Change

Would be nice, but I wouldn't bank on it happening.

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

So was I (or did you miss the pun?). <_<

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

Nice as it would be to have the extra equipment, I suspect we are a bit too far downstream for that to happen.

    Who's Flown Icelandic?

Not Icelandic. <_< "All three alliances" means Skyteam (Delta/Virgin Australia), Star Alliance (United/Air New Zealand), and One World (American/Qantas).  At the moment, could actually get it as low as $415 on United for an immediate turnaround (2.5 hours in Sydney) on 8/31-9/3, but that would...

    Who's Flown Icelandic?

Good fares are still around.  Just yesterday I booked Chicago to Sydney for $540 round trip (and checking just now, fares in that neighborhood are still available on all three alliances), under $0.03 per mile.

    Unsold sleepers

The problem then becomes that fewer coach passengers will use the diner at the higher prices, which spreads the fixed costs over fewer meals, which necessitates even higher prices, spiraling out of control. I've said before, and continue to believe, that this is part of the reason for...

    German & French trains

Rule of thumb, a change of stations is always necessary when connecting in Paris. Eurostar arrives at Gare du Nord.  St. Lazare is one stop away on the RER E, an easy transfer compared to some of the possible combinations.

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

More to the point, Amtrak is probably unwilling to try anything that might increase net foodservice costs, which operating a Viewdiner as a dining car in NEC Regional service likely would.

Is Amtrak getting stricter with the carry on policy?

Certainly.  You just need to find a washboard road.

Baggage car removed from Sunset Limited / Texas Eagle

Seems like the logical thing would be to have a coach-bag on #1/2 and a coach-bag on #421/422 so as not to have to transfer the baggage between cars (to be clear, two coach-bags west of SAS). Run a V2 bag and standard coach on #21/22 on the days it runs without #421/422.

July Changes to Lake Shore and Capitol Limited Dining

By not selling the boxed meals to non-sleeper passengers, there is no published menu price, thus theoretically fewer limits on creative cost allocation. Or we could call it fresh, contemporary accounting.
