New Amtrak President on the Crescent

At least he doesn't appear to be wearing pajamas.

    Chicago Ticket Counter Relocated

Phased construction, awkward as it may appear at times, is still preferable to shutting down the whole place (and most of Amtrak with it) for 6 months or so to get everything done at once. From what I've seen, they have been doing a decent job of sequencing the work to minimize impact on customers.

    Amtrak System Timetable Updated

Twice a week might actually be more than frequent enough. If you need real time updates, there's an app for that.

Lake Shore Limited segment appears very expensive?

The alerts are only for price drops; if the fare goes up, that data isn't included. So for example on 9/7 when the 449 bedroom dropped to $374, we don't know how long it was at that price before it went back up (all at once or in several steps?) to $748 on 9/10.

    Baltimore to Chicago?

They got it back around 2003.

    Train to Winnipeg

16-17 hours seems quite optimistic, since CHI-GFK is currently about 15 hours, which incidentally is about what the Palmetto is. If we look at just CHI-GFK, a schedule 8 hours earlier than the WB EB and 8 hours later than the EB EB would just about match the Palmetto's schedule as well. It...

am I the only one bothered by pajamas in dining car?

Yes, but after you are in the dining car, do the shoes need to remain on? I suppose if removing shoes in the diner gets to be a thing, one would need to be cautious if the chef's special is filet of sole.

A Chihuahua Dog in CZ Bedroom 0n 8/16-8/17-What the heck!

Probably the best thing for it to eat, so as to glue its mouth shut for a while. <_< The SCA (with backup from the LSA if necessary) could have insisted on delivering meals to the room. Or the humans could take turns eating in the dining car. There are alternatives that keep the dog out of...

Comparing Amtrak Schedules, Past vs. Present

Auto Train would be the exception to that statement. The number of stops in VA, though, offsets the slight advantage PA has in the number of LD trains. Yeah, I'd like to see the Broadway come back, too, but there does seem to be quite an obsession.

Comparing Amtrak Schedules, Past vs. Present

Almost half of those LD trains have stops in PA, a non-LD train traverses the entire width of the state with connections to LD trains on both ends, there are 20 corridor trains per day serving the state, and over 70 additional corridor trains per day stop in PA. Seems to me Congress and Amtrak...

    Countdown to Boardman's departure

$201 is worth, in round numbers, 7000 points. You can earn those points by charging $3500 in travel (any kind of travel, not just Amtrak) or $7000 of anything on the AGR card. Shopping portal purchases, promotions, manufactured spending, and signup bonuses can generate additional points. The...

    Southwest Chief #3(25)

Apparently the installation of signals and gates at that crossing was just recently approved. If only that work had been completed by now.... http://www.chieftain.com/mobile/msearch/4888509-123/crossing-railroad-pages-pageset

    Waterloo, IN Station Improvements

Earlier press releases mentioned electronic signage and staffing. I would guess this involves a display of the currently projected train arrival time, and will enable the staff to start shooing passengers out to the platform a few minutes before, or more if necessary for those who need...

    Waterloo, IN Station Improvements

It's done! ...though if there was any local media coverage I missed it. Looks very nice with new sidewalks and street lights, outdoor benches, and other amenities. The station waiting room is on one end of the building and the rest is a community center. The accessible entrance is from a...

why is Capital Limited late every day?

Most every hotel will let you store luggage for a few hours after checkout. Or, there are lockers for rent at Chicago Union Station.

Mini- Adventure Berlin, Warsaw and Krakow, last leg.

Great photos! Thanks for the report. This reminds me of taking the IC from Amsterdam Centraal to western Germany last summer (connecting to City Night Line to Prague). The A/C was out, and there were no operable windows. They stopped a couple times to "reboot" the A/C, which worked for a few...

Wish List for Amtrak/Train Service Expansions

AAO's proposal connects Fort Wayne to Columbus via Lima, which is shorter and seems more straightforward. Other than making it more convenient for you to ride (nothing wrong with that if you're dreaming), are there advantages to routing it through Toledo?
