Planning Rail Trip in Germany and Poland

There's no paperwork or customs formalities at the German-Polish border, it's all intra-Schengen. No different than crossing the border from Illinois to Missouri.

Airplanes, trains, goats, France, oh my!

The only reason you'd have to claim the checked bag in BOS on the eastbound flights is if you had a very long (such as overnight) layover. Otherwise you check the bag in RDM and (with luck) will see it again at CDG. However, on the way back, you will have to claim the checked luggage at your...

Airplanes, trains, goats, France, oh my!

Why check the bag in BOS? Either check it all the way through from RDM, or carry it all the way and avoid CDG baggage claim (recommended). If checking, make sure not to put medications or electronics in the checked bag. While the TGV would be fun, there's two strikes against it in practical...

    Eastbound Trip Info

If you're on the Lake Shore Limited, that's a single level train, so no stairs between your seat and the cafe car and diner. Chicago Union Station has a food court and convenience store-type shops one level up from the platforms; there are escalators. I'm not sure what the best source for ice...

Routing of a Canadian-style cross-country train under Amtrak?

There's already Amtrak trains 1 & 2 to correspond to Via trains 1 & 2. It's just that part of the route is currently "suspended" so that it's not a true transcontinental train.

    Round-Trip Ticket required for Visas

I've been to several dozen countries, and only once (Myanmar) had to get a visa in advance. Wikipedia has a helpful map of the entry requirements of various countries for US citizens.

Miami to Atlanta takes 3 trains and big layover?

I would interpret this as "Miami Florida to Savannah Georgia [on Amtrak,] then a four hour greyhound ride."

I was shocked to see this monitor at Kalamazoo station.

Referring to the photo: How can an on-time 29 and a slightly-late 49 be close enough together to be represented by the same arrow?

    Broadway Ltd Route being rebuilt

The Columbus corridor would most likely split from the CFE at Dunkirk (shown in thin light blue on the map linked in the OP), but there could be two or three other options farther east, including all the way to Crestline and backtracking slightly southwest.

    Broadway Ltd Route being rebuilt

Scratch Columbus, that would have been substantially out of the way. The map in the linked article shows the trackage pretty well. The original PRR route used by the Broadway through 1990 is in "fat" blue and black. Crestline is at the east end of the blue segment, which is currently the...

    Waterloo, IN/Fort Wayne

Fly back to Chicago or Cleveland; take Amtrak from there to WTI and reclaim the car.

    Comparing airport transit connections worldwide

JNB has the relatively new Gautrain. Convenient and fast if your destination is on their network.

Capitol Limited -vs- Lake Shore Limited

Looking at data for the last month, that would have misconnected 40% of the time. The web site appears to offer NER 187 (9:10p) as the guaranteed connection, and even then there's a 13% chance of getting to ride train 67. The westbound connection is pretty reliable, though.

    Waterloo, IN Station Improvements

Update: The revised plan is to move the old station building using the $1.8M grant. Parking, lighting, electronic $ignage, etc. would be included, but not the new platforms. News article here.

    Pittsburgh to Columbus (by Ambus)

There should be taxis at the Columbus Greyhound station; other options include the local bus and Uber. The station area is safe enough during the day, but I've never been there that early. Cleveland to Columbus on Greyhound Express looks quite a bit cheaper and would give you a few more hours...

City of New Orleans, Pullman Style

A few observations to update Shortline's excellent report based on my northbound trip a week ago. There were four cars on this run; Belleview sleeper, Baton Rouge sleeper, Scenic View full-dome diner, and Adirondack Club square-end observation. I had booked a roomette but there were none in...

The Amtrak Pioneer- Ripe for a Return

The Zephyr-Starlight and Chief-Starlight connections are actually pretty reliable.

    Annoyed

Very likely it was the LSL, 48/448(27), boarding at Utica (scheduled 12:42, actual 5:05). The description would also fit the split at ALB (48 arrival 6:58?, 448(28) departure 7:35). The only consolation I can offer the OP is that 48(26) departed UCA at 7:16 and 48(28) departed UCA at 11:37...

    Train travel mistakes you've made

Earlier this year while booking an AGR ticket with a connection from the SWC to the CS, the agent and I were discussing room assignments and he reissued the ticket for a different room. In doing so, he created a stopover and had me leaving CHI on the 2nd and departing LA on the 14th instead of...

Will Amtrak permanently re-route the CL / LSL

Especially if MI is looking to add a frequency to the Wolverines once they have Talgos and/or the new bilevels: I think it would make more sense to run one of the Wolverines down to TOL rather than reroute the LSL or CL through MI. This would allow an all-rail connection (rather than...
