    Midwest Venture introduction

So everybody should be uncomfortable in smaller seats in order for very few people to get down the aisle easier?

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

Maybe UP should find a way not to have its trains stopped for long periods of time at the site of the robberies. But again, we talking 90 containers out of the 20,000 or so handled daily, so maybe that's why UP hasn't hustled to prevent the problem.

Wisconsin Talgos are going to Nigeria

Trains News Wire said it was a 23-mile route, so its more commuter than intercity.

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

The whole just shows the lack of security in the railroad business. Trains are often sitting around for hours in an unsecured location. If a high value intermodal train is stopped somewhere you would think a railroad police car could be sent to the scene. If might be enough to discourage any...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

the trip from St. Paul to Chicago will not be an overnight run. No one-way sleeper will be needed. It will probably leave St. Paul in the late morning or early afternoon.

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

Who's talking about a second daytime train? My point is that a nighttime train would not receive support from Vermont if it causes the cancellation of the daytime train. Amtrak would have to pay for the full operation of a revived Montrealer. Quebec would certainly have no interest in...

The awful experience of being on hold with Amtrak

Unfortunately, terrible telephone service is now the norm for all American businesses.

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

Why would Quebec want to pay for a Montrealer? The daytime train is much more valuable to Vermont than any kind of overnight train would mean for Quebec.

Chicago L station ridership (and inequity?)

Having run-through service in major cities has a nice planning ring to it, but how useful is it, actually? Since Philadelphia is only U.S. city operating on such a concept, let's look at it. How many passengers actually "ride through" the center city from suburb to suburb? Probably very few. I...

Stephen Gardner Appointed as Amtrak CEO

An interesting part of the RPA's latest message is its mention of a flurry of anti-LD articles appearing in a number of publications. RPA doesn't directly say who is behind this effort, but later notes that RPA does not have the financial power of the big freight railroads to influence...

    Changes in Missouri Service

Didn't Missouri drop one of the River Runners in the past due to some kind of missed payments and then restate them later? Missouri really doesn't seem too interested in intercity rail to begin with. As far as Indiana is concerned, they actually seem proud of being a backwards kind of place...

Bus drivers union calls Denver Union Station a "hellhole."

Transit agencies having their own police force allow those officers to focus on problems involving transit. Local police department have other demands and might put any kind of transit enforcement on the back burner. Having such police forces is quite a crazy quilt. Metra, for instance, has its...

Special announcement from Amtrak this weekend?

Hey guys, I hate to say I told you so, but check out post #51.

Special announcement from Amtrak this weekend?

It's probably something very mundane, like a ticket sale. I wouldn't put a lot of faith in an outside photo of any type of car.

Remembering the Golden Age that Preceded Amtrak

Yeah, it's some kind of advertising promo.

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

Let us not forget the "in the know" types who assured us that the LSL would begin running via Michigan as soon as possible. It never happened. Now, some reduction in service may happen due to crew shortages. After all, airlines have been canceling hundreds of flights every day, but it sure...

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

It seems like everyone is going nuts over some post from a person with only 19 previous posts who claims to have information from "the top." Unless this person is related to Flynn or Gardner, then I doubt their connection to "the top." Everyone should calm down until we actually hear something...

    Sunset Limited and Phoenix

Tucson-Phoenix is low hanging fruit. Restoring the line west of Phoenix is a lot of money and effort.

    Trip Report to Grand Junction

The store must get a lot of local business. I can't imagine how they could survive on passengers from two trains a day.

St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packers hats may get you sneered at, but you won't be stopped from wearing them.
