Fantasy Design: The Night Owl II Sleeper

I'm not sure Americans would be receptive to some kind of Japanese pod hotel accommodations. Sleeping in a compartment with five strangers would also not be wildly popular.

Is the Wolverine getting new coach cars?

The cars you see in the CUS yard are awaiting fixes, such as removing lead pipes that will taint the drinking water. I also heard that there were problems with the ceiling tiles. Siemens has been manufacturing cars on a speedy basis, but apparently messed up on the IDOT/CalTrans order. There...

My review of my Gathering train trips - October 2021

NICTD's contractor has been knocking down dozens of old homes in the path of the project. As I see it, the end result will be two tracks along the present right of way with a one (or maybe two) lane street to the south of the tracks. A bunch of grade crossings will be closed and a new station...

UP seeks to sell Chicago-area commuter stations

This is all part of a game being played by the UP to get Metra to take over all the employees involved in the commuter operations while UP retains ownership of the tracks. This will allow the UP to report to Wall Street moguls that 500 to 1,000 employees have been removed from the books, causing...

PSR: What is it? Why is it bad? What does it mean for the future?

Although I'm no expert on this topic, it seems to me that the main idea of PSR is to run very few, very long trains. The plan is to cut costs as much as possible, customer service be dammed. Railroads run trains that are two to three miles long, in many cases way too long for existing sidings...

    Midwest Venture introduction

This doesn't have anything to do with maintenance. It's the way they came out of the factory.

    Midwest Venture introduction

You do realize that if someone got sick from drinking the water, Amtrak, Siemens, California, Illinois and some bystanders would be sued for all the money in the world. You can't deliberatly expose people to dangers that you know about.

    Amtrak Employees and RPA

How would Amtrak know if an employee is a member of RPA? An employer has no right to restrict employee membership in any off-duty organization. Unless the RPA is declared a terrorist organization, then anybody should free to belong.

UP seeks to sell Chicago-area commuter stations

The Daily Herald serves the Northwest and West Suburbs, so they probably don't give a thought to the North Suburbs since they have no readers there.

    New flex meal menu (10/06/21)

It means they'll give you a heated packaged omelet made with an egg substitute, not a real egg. As far as I can gather, these are just new menu items, they're not adding a cook to the staff.

ACE Autumn Colors Express & Cincinnati Daylight Express

The "tourist train" has been canceled for 2021. So, I doubt if that will impact your parking situation.

NTSB urges railroads to boost safety measures for workers on the rails

How is the U.S. unique in mixing freight and passenger trains? Every other country in the world does it. In addition, the situation in question happened on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, hardly a bastion of freight trains.

    UP and Amtrak

Why is it inconsistent? UP uses its steam program to improve its public image and put the railroad in a positive spotlight. How it handles Amtrak is basically an economic decision.

The obsession with the past is hurting the future of passenger rail

An Amtrak stop at an airport would be best served by multi-train corridors, not some once a day LD route.

    UP and Amtrak

UP is probably no better or no worse than the other big freight systems, although BNSF at least seem to try and NS is just awful on the Cleveland-Chicago line. CP actually has the best record, basically because of the 90percent or better OTP of the Hiawathas.

Will Hyperloop ever replace conventional trains?

Nah, put your money on Star Trek-type transporters.

    Metra wastes money

With many downtown offices closed or working with only a small staff, the rush hour isn't what it used to be. Commuter railroads need to offer frequent service during the day and into the late evening hours for people working unconventional hours or traveling for non-work purposes. Switching...

    "Highball" - More terminology questions.

I never realized there was a formal definition for "highball." I always thought it was an informal way of saying, "let's go." Well, you learn something everyday.

How's the Chicago-Pontiac Wolverine route doing with track upgrades to 110 mph?

110 top speed has been in effect for many years on the Amtrak-owned trackage between Porter, IN, and Kalamazoo. Michigan is looking to up the top speed on its owned-trackage between Kalamazoo and Dearborn.
