Big Boy No. 4014 “West Coast Steam Tour.” in July 2022

Nice article and pics in today’s New York Times on UP’s Big Boy 4-8-8-4 on its trip around the south in 2021.

Empire Builder disruption due to freight derailment (5/1/22)

Did they just reverse direction of each train?

    No Amtrak Alerts at Amtrak.com?

Twitter wasnt my point. My point was I’m not seeing any alerts by any means so I was trying to head off replies that just told me to use Twitter to see them. My OP stands. No alerts. And I don’t need to see them, I just like to, and I’m just curious if anyone knows why they’re not showing up.

    No Amtrak Alerts at Amtrak.com?

Since last night, I haven’t seen any service alerts at Amtrak.com. Other parts of the site seem in order, such as checking train status by number or station, but no alerts. I don’t (and won’t) tweet so I can’t (and won’t) look for them that way. Just curious…

Empire Builder disruption due to freight derailment (5/1/22)

Wow. Bad news. I don’t understand your nomenclature. Is it the Amtrak that derailed?

Markets along existing Amtrak routes with untapped ridership potential

I know, and I agree. But it might still be interesting, in the spirit of the OP, to think about ridership on trains vs planes on many short routes, plus think about what it might do for ridership if some routes took on trains with fewer intermediate stops, as a deliberate attempt to grab...

Markets along existing Amtrak routes with untapped ridership potential

CHI-Detroit? CHI- St. Louis? Chi-Indianapolis-Cincinnati? Just a few that come to mind. All are fairly short hops, and total time wise incl getting to and through airports probably competitive with flying. Maybe not Chi-Cin but the others might could work.

California Zephyr or Empire Builder next week?

Others are spot on re scenery on the Zephyr. Issues I’ve read about at the moment (last couple weeks, etc) seem to involve short term severe weather such as snow, wind, and wildfires all causing much uncertainty on either route you‘re considering. No way to predict that well in advance of an...

    Tracking current location on iPad

Ok. Cool. Thx for explaining it for me. I had just assumed my iPad had some GPS capability for maps.me to work like it does. Either way, it works for me and that’s what matters for me! 😆

    Tracking current location on iPad

I’m not a techie at all but I have a normal regular iPad that does, have wifi and does not have cell service and I have used maps.me with however it and my iPad use GPS for nearly a decade now. I’ve never once not been able to see the little blue icon for me where I am, anywhere I’ve ever gone...

    Tracking current location on iPad

I strongly suggest you consider an app called maps.me. It uses GPS exclusively. It needs zero wifi or cellular service. You do need to download its detailed map data files ahead of leaving home (or any wifi zone) for wherever you want to track yourself, but once you’ve done that you can track...

Work around for chronically late northbound Crescent at ATL

OK, so the diff is about $100. All things considered, for a trip to New York, including ANYTHING you do or eat while there, that’s peanuts for the convenience your idea gives you. Good thinking, friend!

Work around for chronically late northbound Crescent at ATL

Hey. Now that’s an idea! Get up at a sane hour, have plenty of margin btwn in and out at BHM, and leave for NYP, in actuality, about supper time (leaving aside, of course, just what “supper” would amount to on the Crescent. I’ve actually considered almost the same idea for trips to NYP from...

Canada coast to coast dream trip

Hey, Brian, I never said my fantasy could be cost-justified! It’s a fantasy! 😝😝😝. In fact, you’re exactly right.

    Airline pricing is nuts

MARC rider, you are spot on about airline pricing! I will never forget a personal example: I had booked a RT San Jose-Chicago-San Jose and then needed to add a RT btwn Chicago and Stevens Point, WI, in btwn the legs from San Jose to Chi and back to San Jose. This was back when you could still...

Who in the world are you?

Welcome to Amtrak, Alex! I’m like you, in reverse. I’d travel to Europe just to take European trains. In fact, I have done! I hope you have a wonderful visit to America whenever you come, and I hope all your trains are on time! Good luck with that! 😝

Canada coast to coast dream trip

This is good to know. Thx for this. I just learned something about the Prestige bedroom design that takes a bit of the bloom off the rose for me, so to speak. Apparently, the bed is one mattress, built as a Murphy bed, and only one side of the bed is open to the rest of the cabin. So one of...

Progress on my printable timetable generator

Sir, this really is amazing work you’ve done. Especially for those of us who still just want something we can read offline, it’s great work. I’m nearly certain I know the answer to this Q but I’ll ask to be sure. Have you done one yet for the Acela and other trains btwn Washington and Boston?
