    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

I arrived in LA on the TE/SL at 0445 a couple of weeks ago. The Lounge was open! A redcap drove me to the ticket office area, up in the elevator, and wow, cheerful helping employees. I did a bit of shuffling of dirties for cleans, and they took care of checking my big rolly bag for the next...

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Part of the toilet problem is that some of the riders can't resist flushing paper towels or other bulky matter, and once one of the toilets is jammed like that the whole car shuts down. They make announcements, which are ignored by a few (Oh, what do they know).

Modified Amtrak service due to Hurricane Helene

I don't see any Crescents on the tracker. A couple of them have gotten through the past few days. Maybe the WIFI is down.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Well, I better use my time in New Orleans to stock up on food. I see at least one item in all but one of those dishes which give me reflux. My 75-year-old stomach is rather tender. I think I'll take lunch on board with me, and have the chicken fettucine alfredo for dinner.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I'm booked on the Crescent in a roomette on October 6th New Orleans to Charlottesville. Yes, it will be nice to go to the diner. Last time, a couple of years ago, there was no choice.

    Emeryville, California layover question

I transferred in Sacramento last time I was out there, but I was southbound on the CS and thus arrived in the morning. I took the light rail out to a Holiday Inn at Rancho Cordova, and light rail back in the morning to catch the CZ. Not sure how late the light rail runs, or how much an Uber...

    "I like trains"

I bought a very comfortable Amtrak jacket with capacious inside pockets (What has he got in his pocketss?) on my big trip in 2017. I don't think they are available anymore. I love it, and whenever I am somewhere that a jacket is needed, I wear it (not Texas, right now). It is similar to those...

    Texas Eagle discussion H2 2024

Back in the 1990s there was a tourist train using old 'Heritage' sleepers and a diner from Nuevo Laredo to Mexico City, and I took a bus from Fredericksburg to San Antonio, then another to Laredo, and a taxi across the border to get on this train, in order to visit a missionary friend who was...

    Texas Eagle discussion H2 2024

I'm planning to be on the Texas Eagle 421 sleeping car leaving Chicago on Tuesday October 15th, passing through my 'home station' Austin on Wednesday the 16th, and arriving in LA on the 18th. on the 19th/20th the Coast Starlight to Portland, 21st/22nd Empire Builder to Sandpoint; then 25th/26th...

    Walking Stick

I have carried my collapsible walking stick/cane on and off of Amtrak trains for many years, with no difficulty. I need it for stability, as I tend to totter a bit, but not so much for support. It folds up nicely into one of the pockets of my backpack when I have my rolly suitcase as a...

First time Zephyr + Starlight, Surfliner, Ventures, Metra, and United

There are some great ones, but sadly, others whose attitude seems to be "This would be a great job if it weren't for all these passengers." I think my worst experience with a conductor was during the COVID maskness, when I was on the Sunset going from New Orleans to San Antonio, sitting in my...

First time Zephyr + Starlight, Surfliner, Ventures, Metra, and United

One time I was going north around this curve, and a lady asked what that big building down there was. I told her it was a prison, the California Men's Colony, and she said sort of angrily that they shouldn't put prisons where people could see them, because they spoiled the view.

    Lake Shore Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Even with the dragon, lock your bags. Run a bicycle lock through all of them. The dragon will notice someone carrying two or three gags chained together.

    What should Amtrak change?

I agree with needing an onboard manager, and proper training of the onboard crew, and a passenger service manual that they actually adhere to. Too much of what is wrong with individual trips is due to not enough supervision, allowing, for instance, the CSA decides not to make coffee; the...

Los Angeles Union Station and environs

I plan to arrive in LA on the 421 TE/SL on Oct 18th and leave on the 19th on the Coast Starlight. I'll report on the Metro Plaza, and Philippe, and conditions in and around the station. I'm riding 421 from Chicago. I live near Austin, and have been on the leg north (TE) numerous times, and the...

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I'm booked in the 2830 sleeper Portland to Sandpoint (0220, oh my!) EB in October, and I plan to hit a deli for some food to take onboard. Not counting on Amtrak much. A couple of days later I get back on at Sandpoint into the 0831 (0220, oh my!) for the rest of the trip back to Chicago, and...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

My last trip on the Crescent, in 2022, the only thing worth eating, or which even had a non-dogfood appearance, was the salmon. Had it once on the Cardinal, twice on the Crescent, both trains gave no option but eating in the room.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

My brain has been on 1990's prices. My first trip on a long distance train, in December 1968, was the Broadway Limited, Chicago to New York, and dinner was about $10-12, and breakfast in the morning was $8. Of course my Navy pay was $113 a month then as a Seaman Apprentice (E-2). I have been...
