Roomette as bed for entire trip?

Just ask the attendant when you want it down, and that'll be that. Lots of people do that. Just, if you want the door closed, there's really tight floor space, so you might want to just have the curtain closed.

How much of the Amtrak map has one covered?

My two biggest and regretful misses were pre-Amtrak: When I finished my Navy School at Mare Island, California in 1970, there was still a train to Chicago - coach, no diner, but I was young. The WP agent I spoke to on the phone lied and said the train had already been canceled. I didn't check...

    Texas Eagle discussion

I'm getting on the Eaglet on March 12th, and plan to take the time to buy breakfast for me and my friend who takes me to the station. I wish I could get a pizza delivered in Fort Worth or Dallas.

Amen to that. They will feed you, but it is blah food, and they will rush you, or insist that you eat in your room. Eat well before boarding, and look forward to Breakfast in west Texas.

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

Well, thanks. I'm staying two short and 1/2 long blocks away, so I guess I'll plan to get there at five or so. I'll report on the hotel.

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

I am booked on train 66 NE Regional, from NY Penn to Boston, on March 21st, at (shudder) 0529, and I just noticed that it gets into NYC at 0157. What do they do with the train for those three and a half hours? Does it just sit at the platform with a passel of disconsolate through passengers on...

    Riding Amtrak for fun?

Any time I see a [passenger] train, I ask myself "Why am I not on that train?" I have experienced bad service, delays, surly crews, and excellent service, on-time (not too often), and cheerful crews. I'm 74. In March I am going from Austin, Texas to New York to see my brother (76), not in good...

    Tipping on Amtrak

On my last trip on the Crescent, in 2022, the SCA made the bed up without the mattress from above, and I did it myself, so I tipped myself for that trip.

Will seat cushion need a doctor’s note?

I've only once seen someone boarding accosted for excess items, and it was truly excess: going into coach with two big suitcases, pillows, handbags, and a big cooler.

An Eaglete day trip gone wrong

So far, so good for me. In 7 recent years of riding, all my trains have gone through. Never yet lost a sleeper space or been bustituted, but there is, I guess always a chance these days. After a near 2023 moratorium on trains (just a round trip Petersburg to Newark NJ - Newark NJ to Petersburg)...

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

Certainly more affordable, but I just don't fit in a Viewliner roomette, and since I have no little birds to buy worms for, I have the money.

    Current Downeaster discussion

Supposed to be a pretty good art museum on campus, also. I think I'll be able to find things to do which don't involve prolonged frigidity.

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

I am 6' 6" and "robusto", and 74 years old, and the beds on the Viewliner roomettes are too small for me. The Superliner roomettes's are okay, but the Viewliner bed narrows down at the foot, and I hit things with my feet when turning over. So, as I have the means, I decided to get bedrooms on...

    Current Downeaster discussion

In mid-March I'm going from Austin, Texas (eaglette), to Chicago - one night in Aurora (Irish pub there) - on to NYC (Cardinal) - NE Regional to Boston to Downeaster to Brunswick. I will report on this place. Then Downeaster (Upwester?) back to Boston - Lake Shore Limited to Chicago - another...

Discussion of NJTransit service expansion like MidTown Direct (MTD)

I stayed in Newark last April and counted on PATH to get into NYC. OK the first day, but the 2nd day PATH went down with a signalling problem, and finally after 20 minutes or so, they announced that NJT would cross-honor. Then after 30 more minutes, the first NJT train came in, and through...

How much of the Amtrak map has one covered?

I was set to do the Sunset/Texas Eagle LA to Chicago last year, but Amtrak was killing sleepers left and right (too big and old to sleep in coach, especially that long), so I modified my trip. I will be trying to do the other way soon, Chicago to LA.

Detraining one stop early, then reboarding

I think that the clunky Amtrak website could accomplish this, though.
